Man Says Buying Hot Pockets Saved Him From Plane Crash

An Ohio man says a spur-of-the-moment decision to pick up Hot Pockets saved his life.

Jason Bartley, 38, was running errands and was just about to head home to his Akron apartment at 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday, the Akron Beacon Journal reports. Bartley opted to make one last stop at the Dollar General to pick up a couple of Hot Pockets sandwiches.

When he got home, his apartment building was in flames.

A charter plane en route from Florida to Minnesota had crashed into Bartley’s building at 2:53 p.m., completely destroying the structure and damaging a nearby house.

"This plane just dropped out of the sky, veered and crashed into the apartment building," neighbor Roberta Porter told USA Today.

All seven passengers and two crew members aboard the plane were killed, CNN reported. Bartley’s apartment building, which contained four units, was completely empty at the time of the crash.

If Bartley hadn’t made his Hot Pocket detour, he said, there would have been one more fatality.

“Sometimes you get nauseous thinking about it,” he told the Beacon Journal. “It’s still even hard to comprehend.”
