TikTok Parents Apologize For Video Showing How To Sneak Toddler On Disney Rides

The Slinky Dog Dash ride at Disney World has a height requirement of 38 inches.Gerardo Mora via Getty ImagesThe Florida family who went viral for a TikTok video that showed how to make their toddler son meet the height requirements for certain thrill rides at the Disney theme parks is now apologizing for the “shoe hack.”The family has also removed all videos referencing the hack, save for a single apology video, where they claim, “With influence comes responsibility.”Advertisement It all started when Ty and Haley Kelly posted a video where they glued flip-flop bottoms to their son’s shoes so he’d meet the 38-inch height requirements for some rides.Although Ty Kelly described the shoe-gluing as the “ultimate theme park hack,” others weren’t impressed by the couple’s ingenuity, feeling, as one YouTuber commenter noted, as if they seemed to care more “about a youtube video than your child’s safety.”At first, Ty Kelly responded to the criticism by claiming the “hack” was faked in a now-deleted video.“I would never condone any other parent trying to put their kid on a ride that they aren’t tall enough for,” he said in the clip. “You don’t know what happened. In the video, you didn’t see him actually go on any rides.”Advertisement Ty Kelly also claimed his son is actually tall enough for the rides, but didn’t acknowledge that someone viewing the first video without that context might take his advice seriously. That changed on Friday when the couple posted an apology video. In the apology, they said they now realize that “what started off as us trying to make an entertaining video for our audience that we thought you’d enjoy quickly turned into us realizing that what we put out on our platforms has more consequences than we initially thought.”Ty Kelly admitted that while his own son was unharmed from the video, he and Haley Kelly now realize their actions could influence another parent to try the potentially dangerous shoe stunt on their own kids.Haley Kelly said that she hopes their followers give them the chance “to prove that we love our children” and they take their responsibility as “influencers” seriously. You can see the complete apology below

Although some commenters did vow to give the couple the benefit of the doubt, others were skeptical. One YouTuber commenter said, “You aren’t sorry for what you did, you’re sorry you suffered consequences for your horrible choices.”A person commenting on the couple’s TikTok page pointed out the weird excuses the family has used since the original video.“You put out a hack that you claimed you used and then claimed that you didn’t do it because you knew how dangerous it was but despite knowing how dangerous it was you claimed you did and claimed you wanted others to try for entertainment,” the person wrote.RelateddisneyTikTokLife HacksParents On TikTok Draw Instant Backlash For Potentially Dangerous Disney Hack

Parents On TikTok Draw Instant Backlash For Potentially Dangerous Disney 'Hack'

A Florida family known for its TikTok videos has come under fire for a “shoe hack” that many people felt put their oldest child in potential danger.Recently, Ty and Haley Kelly posted a video showing how they were able to make their toddler son tall enough to ride the more adult thrill rides at the Disney theme parks. The video, which can be seen in a full version below, shows the two parents gluing flip-flop bottoms to some shoes with already thick soles to help their 37-inch son look like he’s 38 inches tall, the minimum height requirement

But while Ty Kelly calls the shoe-gluing the “ultimate theme park hack,” others felt that he, as one YouTuber commenter noted, seemed to care more “about a youtube video than your child’s safety.”The video inspired clapbacks like this one from a woman who helpfully pointed out that height restrictions aren’t put on rides to “ruin your child’s day.” @_cal_cifer #stitch with @the.kelly.fam Stop encouraging this behavior please. #badhacks #parentingfail #parentingfails #themepark #rollercoaster #rollercoasterreactions #parentsoftiktok #childfreebychoice ♬ Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival Advertisement Other people commenting on the couple’s YouTube page were also tough on them.“Safety regulations are written in blood. In the case of amusement parks, that blood is the blood of young children. You’re not just putting your kid in danger, but the children of anyone foolish enough to try this,” one person wrote, while another called it “the dumbest idea EVER.”Others pointed out that the “hack” could get some theme park employees fired on the spot if they let a child with altered shoes on a ride.As Theme Park Insider Editor Robert Niles explained in 2018, height requirements on rides aren’t arbitrary.“Height and other restrictions protect riders in case something goes wrong, such as the stopping on a safety brake or having to be evacuated,” he wrote. “In those, rare cases, people under the designated height can be at extreme risk.”HuffPost reached out to Disney for comment, but did not immediately receive a response.Ty Kelly was apparently miffed that people were questioning his parenting skills rather than praising his “ultimate theme park hack,” so he posted a video titled “Watch All The Way Through Please,” where he claimed the “hack” was faked

“I would never condone any other parent trying to put their kid on a ride that they aren’t tall enough for,” he said in the clip. “You don’t know what happened. In the video, you didn’t see him actually go on any rides.”Kelly also claimed there was no need for shoes — since his son is actually tall enough for the rides. He didn’t acknowledge that someone viewing the first video without that additional context might take his advice at face value. @the.kelly.fam Just so we’re clear… ♬ original sound - The Kelly Fam Based on the reactions of TikTok commenters, people weren’t particularly impressed.“I cant believe you guys had the audacity to assume that what I said in the video was what I meant,” one commenter snarkily wrote.RelatedSocial MediadisneyTikTokTheme ParksWill Smith Has Finally Poked Fun At His Oscars Slap, And Fans Are Loving ItThe One Parenting Hack That Makes Mindy Kaling Feel Like A ‘Sorceress’A Walt Disney Hologram Was Revealed And Some Fans Aren’t Feeling The Magic

West Mercia Police tweeted Monday that shortly after the break-in, officers stopped a vehicle “presumably purporting to be the Easter bunny” on a highway and arrested a man on suspicion of theft.Prosecutor Owen Beale said Pool gave up when he realized police were after him.Pool “walked towards the police with his hands up. He was arrested and the load was recovered,” Beale said.He added that Pool had planned the theft and that he had previous convictions for handling stolen goods.Pool entered guilty pleas to theft of a trailer, theft of its contents and criminal damage to a chain lock. German Ballet Director Formally Apologizes For Smearing Feces In Critic’s Face

Marco Goecke was suspended from his post as ballet chief at the Hannover state opera following an incident this past weekend where he smeared dog feces on the face of a newspaper critic whose reviews he had taken exception to. (Photo by Christophe Gateau/picture alliance via Getty Images)picture alliance via Getty ImagesBERLIN (AP) — A German ballet director issued a public apology on Tuesday for smearing dog feces on the face of a newspaper critic whose reviews he had taken exception to.Marco Goecke was suspended from his post as ballet chief at the Hannover state opera following the weekend incident. T he theater’s management called on him Monday to apologize “comprehensively” and explain himself

According to the daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Goecke approached its dance critic, Wiebke Huester, during the interval of a premiere at the opera house on Saturday and asked what she was doing there. The newspaper said that Goecke, who apparently felt provoked by a recent review she wrote of a production he staged in the Netherlands, threatened to ban her from the ballet and accused her of being responsible for people canceling season tickets in Hannover. He then pulled out a paper bag with the feces and smeared her face with the contents.“I would like to apologize sincerely to all concerned, first and foremost to Ms. Huester, for my absolutely unacceptable act,” Huester said in a written statement. “In retrospect, I am clearly aware that this was a disgraceful act in the heat of the moment and an overreaction,” he added. However, he added that it’s time for media to “rethink a certain form of destructive and hurtful reporting that damages the whole cultural sector” and criticized Huester for what he said were “often nasty reviews.”Advertisement Goecke pointed to the “nervous strain” resulting from two premieres in quick succession as a reason for his actions.“I apologize for the fact that I finally blew my top, but I also ask for a certain understanding at least for the reasons why this happened,” he wrote.Huester filed a criminal complaint after the incident. Goecke faces an investigation on suspicion of bodily harm and slander.Goecke has said his elderly dachshund had defecated earlier, and he had packed the mess into a bag and had been planning to dispose of it. While he says he then acted in the heat of the moment, the critic has contended that it was a premeditated attack.Huester said she was shocked by Goecke’s statement on Tuesday.“What kind of an apology is this supposed to be?” she asked on 3sat television, describing it as an attempted justification of his actions, German news agency dpa reported

The daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported that a furious Goecke approached its dance critic, Wiebke Huester, during the interval of a premiere at Hannover’s opera house on Saturday and asked what she was doing there. It said that the two didn’t know each other personally. The newspaper said that Goecke, who apparently felt provoked by a recent review she wrote of a production he staged in the Dutch seat of government, The Hague, threatened to ban her from the ballet and accused her of being responsible for people canceling season tickets in Hannover. He then pulled out a paper bag with animal feces and smeared her face with the contents before making his way off through a packed theater foyer, the newspaper said. Huester identified the substance as dog feces and said she had filed a criminal complaint, German news agency dpa reported. In a statement posted on its website, the opera house said that Huester’s “personal integrity” was violated “in an unspeakable way.” It said that it contacted her immediately after the incident to apologize

It said that Goecke’s “impulsive reaction” violated the ground rules of the theater and that “he caused massive damage to the Hannover State Opera and State Ballet.” As a result, it said, he is being suspended and banned from the opera house until further notice.Goecke has been given the next few days to apologize “comprehensively” and explain himself to theater management “before further steps are initiated,” it added.

Las Vegas Thieves Steal Catalytic Converter From Wienermobile

The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile has been dogged by some thieves in Las Vegas. The 27-foot hot-dog-shaped vehicle was in Sin City this past weekend for a series of events tied to Super Bowl weekend, but early Friday morning the Wienermobile’s catalytic converter was stolen, according to Las Vegas CBS affiliate KLAS TV.As a result, the Wienermobile’s engine just couldn’t cut the mustard, so it had to be towed to a local truck rental facility to the shock of employees

Joseph Rodriguez told the station he was surprised by what he saw when he got to work.“A hot dog truck, no way,” Rodriguez told KLAS. “Imagine like a huge hot dog in the middle of your bay. There’s all these other trucks and you got to work on this.”The crew did a minor repair to fit the Wienermobile with a “temporary” catalytic converter that allowed it to make a previously scheduled 10 a.m. appearance. However, Rodriquez noted that there’s a four-month waiting list for catalytic converters.Metro Police told KLAS that it has not yet received a theft report, but the hotel where it was parked said its corporate division is investigating.Thefts of catalytic converters, a car part that filters out pollutants, have increased in recent years. According to the Los Angeles Times, Toyota Priuses — not novelty meat vehicles — are a typical target, as their catalytic converters can be resold for more than $1,000

The Wienermobile first hit the road in Chicago in 1936, and has since expanded to a fleet of six, each traveling about 1,000 a week.RelatedLas Vegasoscar mayeroscar mayer wienermobileCatalytic convertersWisconsin Cops Pull Over Wienermobile For Traffic InfractionAmerica's Most Outrageous Food Vehicles10 Things You Didn't Know About Oscar Mayer

College Students In Boston Studying How To Dance Like A Rockette

Amarisa LeBar, front, a Radio City Rockette, leads students in a Rockettes Precision Dance Technique course Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2023, at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee in Boston. (AP Photo/Josh Reynolds)via Associated PressBOSTON (AP) — Rhapsody Stiggers has been dancing since she was 2, but the 20-year-old college junior has never taken a dance class quite as challenging as the one she’s in now.She is one of 38 students at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee enrolled in the first for-credit college dance class taught by the Radio City Rockettes, the precision dance team famous for its annual high-kicking “Christmas Spectacular,” seen by more than 69 million people since 1933

The class, taught by a current Rockette, focuses on their meticulously precise technique, based on tap, ballet and jazz, in which the dancers move and kick in perfect synchronicity. The course also teaches strength training, choreography and lessons that can be applied to pretty much any dance genre.“What’s unique about this class is the level of technicality,” said Stiggers, originally from St. Paul, Minnesota. She said she’s skilled in ballet, modern, jazz, salsa, West African and improvisation, but “no other style of dance really emphasizes the precision of every single body part.”“Like the Rockettes, we have to know exactly where our eye is, or where they’re pointing, or where the fingers are pointing, or how extended they are. So in that sense it is more difficult than other styles that I have done in the past,” she said.38 students at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee are learning to do the high kicks made famous by the Radio City Rockettes (AP Photo/Josh Reynolds)via Associated PressAdvertisement It’s one of the most popular dance classes this semester at the performing arts school founded in 1867. Slots filled up fast and though enrollment was originally capped at 30, there were 38 students ultimately allowed in, said Mila Thigpen, chair of dance at the conservatory.Their instructor is Amarisa LeBar, who has been a Rockette for about five years. LeBar, 25, of Iselin, New Jersey, started teaching at her mother’s dance studio at 16, but finds sharing the Rockettes’ style with college students definitely more intense.“Teaching on a Rockette level is completely different and is a lot more difficult to do because we really tune into the perfection of our movement,” LeBar said. The students also get a sense of the teamwork Rockettes develop while rehearsing six hours per day, six days a week.“So to be a Rockette, first off you have to have a love of wanting to work together as a team,” said Julie Branam, director and choreographer of the “Christmas Spectacular.” She started as a dancer 36 years ago

“Sometimes it can be very tedious,” Branam said. “We’re checking what 36 people do in that line over and over again, to say ‘Is you’re head at the same angle? Is you arm at the same height?’ So it’s the willingness of wanting to work as one to make the effort of the 36 look beautiful.”The college-level class is an extension of the Rockettes’ dancer development program, which includes invitation-only summer training for promising dancers. The partnership is a natural, Thigpen said.“We have very similar core values,” she said. “Both the Rockettes and the Boston Conservatory at Berklee have a very long history, and as much as we have to celebrate in our history, we also are both thinking about how we evolve and push both dance education and the profession of dance.”Stiggers has been so inspired that she may audition for the Rockettes someday.“It’s a just fun thing to strive for,” she said. “If I don’t apply or get in, it’s still useful knowledge that I’ve learned that can carry on into the rest of my career.”___This story has been updated to correct that Julie Branam started as a dancer with the Rockettes 36 years ago, not 26.

Indian Government Asks Citizens To Hug Cows On Valentine's Day

India’s government-run animal welfare department has appealed to citizens to mark Valentine’s Day this year not as a celebration of romance but as “Cow Hug Day” to better promote Hindu values. (AP Photo/Rajesh Kumar Singh, File)via Associated PressNEW DELHI (AP) — India’s government-run animal welfare department has appealed to citizens to mark Valentine’s Day this year not as a celebration of romance but as “Cow Hug Day” to better promote Hindu values. The Animal Welfare Board of India said Wednesday that “hugging cows will bring emotional richness and increase individual and collective happiness.”Advertisement Devout Hindus, who worship cows as holy, say the Western holiday goes against traditional Indian values. In recent years, Hindu hardliners have raided shops in Indian cities, burned cards and gifts, and chased hand-holding couples out of restaurants and parks, saying that Valentine’s Day promotes promiscuity. Hardline political groups like Shiv Sena and Bajrang Dal say such actions pave the way to reassert Hindu identity.Young educated Indians irrespective of their religion typically spend the holiday crowding parks and restaurants, exchanging gifts and holding parties to celebrate like any other Indian festival, especially since India began the process of economic liberalization in the early 1990s.The Hindu nationalist government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been pushing a Hindu agenda, seeking supremacy of the religion at the expense of a secular nation known for its diversity. Hindus comprise nearly 80% of its nearly 1.4 billion people. Muslims account for 14%, while Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains account for most of the remaining 6%

The cow has long been embedded in the Hindu psyche and is deeply respected by many similar to one’s mother. Most states in India have banned cow slaughter. The animal welfare board’s appeal asks people to go out and physically hug cows on Feb. 14.Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay, a political analyst, said the message is “absolutely crazy. It defies logic.”“The unfortunate part is this has now official sanction,” he added. “This shows an eraser of one more line between the state and religion, which is very depressing. Now the state is doing what political and religious groups have been campaigning to do.”

Michigan Man Says 6-Year-Old Son Ordered $1K In Food From Grubhub

Mason Stonehouse used his father’s Grubhub account to order $1,000 worth of food delivered to his home on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2023. His father, Keith Stonehouse, was not aware his son was ordering the food and at first did nt understand why delivery people kept ringing his doorbell and leaving food. (Kristin Stonehouse via AP)via Associated PressCHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan man says he was left with a $1,000 bill after his 6-year-old son ordered a virtual smorgasbord of food from several restaurants last weekend, leading to a string of unexpected deliveries — and maybe a starring role in an ad campaign.Keith Stonehouse said the food piled up quickly at his Detroit-area home Saturday night after he let his son, Mason, use his cellphone to play a game before bed. He said the youngster instead used his father’s Grubhub account to order food from one restaurant after another

The boy’s mother, Kristin Stonehouse, told The Associated Press on Thursday that Grubhub has reached out to the family and offered them a $1,000 gift card. The company also is considering using the family in an online promotional campaign, she said. Grubhub officials did not immediately respond to a message from the AP seeking comment.Keith Stonehouse said he was alone with his son while his wife was at the movies when Mason ordered jumbo shrimp, salads, shawarma and chicken pita sandwiches, chili cheese fries and other foods that one Grubhub driver after another delivered to their Chesterfield Township home.“This was like something out of a ‘Saturday Night Live’ skit,” Keith Stonehouse told MLive.com.He added: “I don’t really find it funny yet, but I can laugh with people a little bit. It’s a lot of money and it kind of came out of nowhere.”Keith Stonehouse said his son ordered food from so many different places that Chase Bank sent him a fraud alert declining a $439 order from Happy’s Pizza. But Mason’s $183 order of jumbo shrimp from the same restaurant went through and arrived at the family’s house

Stonehouse said it took the arrival of a few orders of food for him to realize what was going on. By that time, there was nothing he could do to stop the orders from coming.Kristin Stonehouse told the AP that Mason is extremely intelligent and has been reading since he was 2 1/2 years old.“He’s very smart,” she said. “He’s not your average 6-year-old.”She said her husband had just used the Grubhub app on his phone to order dinner before she left and probably just left the app open. She said her son took the phone, hid in the basement and proceeded to order his feast. She said she and her husband had a talk with Mason on Sunday morning and told him what he did was akin to stealing.“I don’t think he grasped that concept at first,” she said.To drive the point home, she and her husband opened up Mason’s piggy bank and pocketed the $115 he had gotten for his birthday in November, telling him the money would go to replenish their accounts. That didn’t seem to faze the boy

“Then he found a penny on the floor and said he could start all over again,” she said.Keith Stonehouse said most of the food went into the family’s refrigerators. He said he also invited some neighbors over to eat some of it.He said he’s heard of things like this happening to other parents, but not at the level he experienced last weekend. The gathering annually attracts thousands. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration compared Punxsutawney Phil’s forecast to the national weather the last 10 years and found “on average, Phil has gotten it right 40% of the time.”This year, Phil’s prediction came during a week when a mess of ice, sleet and snow has lingered across much of the southern U.S

According to records dating back to 1887, Phil has predicted winter more than 100 times. Ten years were lost because no records were kept, organizers said. The 2021 and 2022 forecasts also called for six more weeks of winter. While Punxsutawney Phil may be the most famous groundhog seer, he’s certainly not the only one. Ambitious Plan To Bring Back Extinct Dodo Bird Draws Critics, Investors

The company has formed a division to focus on bird-related genetic technologies. The last dodo, a flightless bird about the size of a turkey, was killed in 1681 on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius. The Dallas company, which launched in 2021, also announced Tuesday it had raised an additional $150 million in funding. To date, it has raised $225 million from wide-ranging investors that include United States Innovative Technology Fund, Breyer Capital and In-Q-Tel, the CIA’s venture capital firm which invests in technology.Colossal Biosciences has raised an additional $150 million from investors to develop genetic technologies that the company claims will help to bring back some extinct species, including the dodo and the woolly mammoth. (AP Photo/Matt Dunham, File)via Associated PressAdvertisement The prospect of bringing the dodo back isn’t expected to directly make money, said Lamm. But the genetic tools and equipment that the company develops to try to do it may have other uses, including for human health care, he said. For example, Colossal is now testing tools to tweak several parts of the genome simultaneously. It’s also working on technologies for what is sometimes called an “artificial womb,” he said. The dodo’s closest living relative is the Nicobar pigeon, said Beth Shapiro, a molecular biologist on Colossal’s scientific advisory board, who has been studying the dodo for two decades. Shapiro is paid by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, which also supports The Associated Press’ Health and Science Department. Her team plans to study DNA differences between the Nicobar pigeon and the dodo to understand “what are the genes that really make a dodo a dodo,” she said. The team may then attempt to edit Nicobar pigeon cells to make them resemble dodo cells. It may be possible to put the tweaked cells into developing eggs of other birds, such as pigeons or chickens, to create offspring that may in turn naturally produce dodo eggs, said Shapiro. The concept is still in an early theoretical stage for dodos

Because animals are a product of both their genetics and their environment — which has changed dramatically since the 1600s — Shapiro said that “it’s not possible to recreate a 100% identical copy of something that’s gone.”Other scientists wonder if it’s even advisable to try, and question whether “de-extinction” diverts attention and money away from efforts to save species still on Earth.“There’s a real hazard in saying that if we destroy nature, we can just put it back together again — because we can’t,” said Duke University ecologist Stuart Pimm, who has no connection to Colossal.“And where on Earth would you put a woolly mammoth, other than in a cage?” asked Pimm, who noted that the ecosystems where mammoths lived disappeared long ago.On a practical level, conservation biologists familiar with captive breeding programs say that it can be tricky for zoo-bred animals to ever adapt to the wild

It helps if they can learn from other wild animals of their kind — an advantage that potential dodos and mammoths won’t have, said Boris Worm, a biologist at the University of Dalhousie in Halifax, Nova Scotia, who has no connection to Colossal.“Preventing species from going extinct in the first place should be our priority, and in most cases, it’s a lot cheaper,” said Worm.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science and Educational Media Group. Researcher Thinks He Solved Bigfoot Mystery, And You Can Do The Math, Too

var label_63d8df0ae4b0c8e3fc805926 = "ctx-wait-63d8df0ae4b0c8e3fc805926"; var defer_63d8df0ae4b0c8e3fc805926 = document.currentScript; console.time(label_63d8df0ae4b0c8e3fc805926); window.waitForGlobal( () => window.HP && window.HP.params && window.HP.params.clientUUID && window.localStorage && defer_63d8df0ae4b0c8e3fc805926 && defer_63d8df0ae4b0c8e3fc805926.parentElement.dataset.ready === "true", () => { console.timeEnd(label_63d8df0ae4b0c8e3fc805926); He’s even come up with a simple formula: Sasquatch sightings were statistically significantly associated with bear populations such that, on the average, one ‘sighting’ is expected for every 900 bears. Based on statistical considerations, it is likely that many supposed Sasquatch are really misidentified known forms.“If Bigfoot is there,” he writes, “it may be many bears.”The study includes a map showing black bear populations and Bigfoot sightings overlapping in some places, especially the Pacific Northwest. But it also shows two big exceptions: Texas and Florida. The two states have had plenty of Bigfoot sightings, but Texas has no real bear population and Florida has only a small presence. Those, he wrote, could be explained by other animals or even people mistaken for Bigfoot. “Usually when people say they’ve seen something like Bigfoot they aren’t lying about what they think they saw,” he told The Telegraph newspaper. “But that doesn’t mean they aren’t mistaken.”Advertisement Foxon’s analysis cites previous studies, including a 2009 report published in the Journal of Biogeography that also found a distinct overlap between black bear populations and Bigfoot sightings. The authors of that study wrote that the overlap suggests “that many sightings of this cryptozoid may be cases of mistaken identity.”But while Foxon thinks Bigfoot sightings might be explained by bears, he has also debunked a common explanation for another mysterious creature: the Loch Ness monster. Some have speculated that the sightings could be spawned by giant eels swimming in the loch. Turns out, the math doesn’t work. He told The Telegraph that spotting a 3-foot eel would be a 1-in-50,000 event in the loch. For an eel that’s about 20 feet or more ― big enough to be mistaken for Nessie ― “the probability is practically next to zero.” At least one hunt, it seems, is still on.

Five weeks later, Chapel entered his first competition, solving the cube in an average of 22 seconds.Fast-forward a year to 2017 in Paris, with Chapel placing fifth in both the 4x4 blindfolded and 5x5 blindfolded categories at the World Cube Association World Championship. At the 2019 world championship in Melbourne, Australia, the recent high school graduate won both events

Factoring in the time it takes for him to review the cube before placing the blindfold over his eyes, Chapel can solve one in around 17 seconds.“The deeper I go into the realm of cubing technique, the more I find interest in pushing the boundaries of what’s possible there,” he said.Chapel has certain inherent abilities: He is capable of remembering and applying thousands of algorithms to solve a Rubik’s Cube and performing one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s violin sonatas from memory. But he also spends hours upon hours honing his craft, including doing regular hand stretches that help Chapel avoid the kinds of aches and pains that come with the frequent and frenetic turning of the cube’s sides.Chapel says years of playing the violin also has contributed to him having “very, very fine motor control already built up.”Advertisement Later this year, Chapel intends to defend his world titles in South Korea. Since the 2021 event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Chapel is the reigning champion in both heading into the 2023 event in Seoul.Once he’s done with school, though, Chapel isn’t sure how speedcubing fits into his future plans.“I guess it’s cool to know that nobody is able to do this,” he said. “But, at the same time, giving myself a little bit of a reality check, it’s like, ‘How much does that actually matter?’”“It’s not going to pay the bills when I’m older,” Chapel said, laughing.
