Scientists Figure Out How Vampire Bats Got A Taste For Blood

WASHINGTON (AP) — Scientists have figured out why vampire bats are the only mammals that can survive on a diet of just blood. They compared the genome of common vampire bats to 26 other bat species and identified 13 genes that are missing or no longer work in vampire bats. Over the years, those gene tweaks helped them adapt to a blood diet rich in iron and protein but with minimal fats or carbohydrates, the researchers reported Friday in the journal Science Advances

The bats live in South and Central America and are basically “living Draculas,” said co-author Michael Hiller of Germany’s Max Planck Institute. About 3 inches (8 centimeters) long with a wingspan of 7 inches (18 centimeters), the bats bite and than lap up blood from livestock or other animals at night. Most mammals couldn’t survive on a low-calorie liquid diet of blood. Only three vampire species of the 1,400 kinds of bats can do that — the others eat mostly insects, fruit, nectar, pollen or meat, such as small frogs and fish.“Blood is a terrible food source,” said Hannah Kim Frank, a bat researcher at Tulane University, who was not involved in the study. “It’s totally bizarre and amazing that vampire bats can survive on blood — they are really weird, even among bats.”Some other creatures also have a taste for blood, including mosquitoes, bedbugs, leeches and fleas

The latest work expands upon research by another team that pinpointed three of the 13 gene losses.“The new paper shows how different vampire bats are from even other closely related bats, which eat nectar and fruit,” said Kate Langwig, a bat researcher at Virginia Tech, who had no role in the study. With such a low-calorie diet, vampire bats can’t go long without a meal. In a pinch, well-fed ones will regurgitate their food to share with a starving neighbor. They seem to keep track of who has helped them in the past, said Hiller, noting that vampire bats have complex social relationships.“It’s not a kin thing,” said Tulane’s Frank. “They just notice and remember: You’re a good sharer, I will reward you.”Advertisement ___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education. Hospital In Doha, Qatar, Only Treats Falcons

Veterinarians at the Souq Waqif Falcon Hospital work on a patient in Doha, Qatar, March 15, 2022. (AP Photo/Lujain Jo)via Associated PressDOHA, Qatar (AP) — At first glance, the Souq Waqif clinic in the historic center of Doha, the capital of Qatar, could be any other state-of-the-art hospital.Nurses in blue scrubs move briskly through the bright wards, conducting rounds. Radiology and operating rooms whir with the beeps and blinks of monitors. Specialists squint at X-rays and masked doctors make incisions with all the high-tech tools of modern surgery on hand

There’s just one thing: The rooms are filled with falcons. In the tiny, wealthy emirate of Qatar, the desert birds are among the nation’s most pampered residents.Long revered across the Arabian Peninsula for their ferocity and hunting prowess, falcons today serve as sheikhly status symbols recalling a Bedouin past. The bond between falconers and their falcons has been an inspiration since the Paleolithic period, when drawings of the creatures first appeared on cave walls.Although less fashionable now than in the days of yore, the art of falconry is still passed down from one generation to the next in Qatar and other oil-rich sheikhdoms of the Persian Gulf. With demand growing in recent years, clubs that teach the sport have sprouted up across the region. Falcons compete in an increasing number of races and beauty contests

The finest falcons fetch at least a few thousand dollars and Qataris spare no expense to maintain their good health.“The establishment of the hospital was to support the hobby and heritage of raising falcons ... it’s a pastime that stretches its veins into multiple generations,” Souq Waqif hospital director Dr. Ikdam Al Karkhi recently told The Associated Press. “Keeping them alive and well is an essential duty.”Public hospitals like Souq Waqif offer expert care to sick and wounded hawks, roughly 30,000 a year. The marbled reception area bustles with owners and handlers bringing their birds in for check-ups, medical tests, feather replacements, orthopedic surgeries — and even something akin to mani-pedis.Falcon nail filing is very serious business, as birds transplanted from the desert wild to opulent homes in skyscraper-studded Doha or bred in captivity cannot easily find sharp surfaces on which to trim their talons

The falcon’s hunt may be a long-venerated tradition, but it’s also grisly work. The cornered prey at times puts up a fight, clawing an attacking falcon and hobbling its wings. Each of a falcon’s feathers is vital to its flight, necessitating careful feather replacement after a scuffle.Doctors pull from a bank of shed feathers to find one that perfectly matches the wounded bird’s breed — plumage of the same pattern, length and color.“If these damaged feathers remain, it can cause loss or reduction of the bird’s fitness,” Al Karkhi said. “They must be treated.”Hospital surgeons treat other casualties of the hunt, too. Falcons’ beaks and talons suffer damage from all that swooping and plunging and gobbling. In the clinic waiting room, falcons perch regally on their owners’ gloved wrists. The Qatari men in their flowing white robes treat the prized birds like children, stroking their feathers and misting their beaks with water.“If a person is neglecting their bird, it’s a huge problem,” said Hamad Al Mehshadi, a falcon festival manager taking his raptor for a regular medical checkup. “When one holds onto their bird, it is something else. The love of the bird is extraordinary.”Oil wealth and global business may have transformed Doha into a futuristic capital with a gleaming array of skyscrapers and megaprojects, including giant stadiums soon to host millions of soccer fans for the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup.But Souq Waqif still sees a steady stream of 150 falcons a day — a sign that the echoes of Qatar’s ancient past are not lost.“Even the look that a falcon and its owner share, it’s different than any other look,” Al Karkhi said. Falconers “feel the loyalty of this bird — a fierce warrior in the wild and yet a pet in my hand.”___Follow Lujain Jo on Twitter at www.twitter.com/lujainjo.

Massachusetts Man Touts Electric Unicycle As Answer To High Gas Prices

FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts man says he has the answer for those singing the blues about stratospheric gas prices.Rick Madeira, of Fall River, has taken to riding his electric unicycle to work, saving on gas and cutting his commute time in the process

“It’s just more convenient and it’s obviously more fun,” he told The Herald News.Madeira’s Gotway Nikola Plus, with no seat or handle bars, just places for his feet, can go 70 or 80 miles (113 or 129 kilometers) on one charge and reaches speeds of up to 40 mph (64 kph), although he rarely goes that fast.“It literally takes me four minutes to get to work, versus about eight minutes in a vehicle,” he said. He’s allowed to ride on the sidewalk, but usually sticks to the road, keeping to the shoulder when possible. He can also move to the front of the line at red lights, like cyclists, he said

His advice to those interested in buying an electric unicycle, which sell for more than $2,000: wear protective and reflective gear, and be respectful of pedestrians.“It’s the future. In 10 or 20 years, I’m sure I won’t even have to bring it up,” he said.Related...How To Make A Tank Of Gas Last LongerGas Price Hikes Test The Climate Action Movement

Jazz Has Actually Been Banned In New Orleans Schools Since 1922

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The school board in the city where jazz took root is preparing to undo a little-known 1922 rule that bans jazz music and dancing in public schools.Officials tell The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate that the policy has racist origins, as its creators sought at the time to distance New Orleans schoolchildren from the African Americans who created the genre. The rule has been ignored for decades. Jazz is taught in some schools and marching bands accompanied by dance teams are a fixture of Carnival season parades

“In this instance and in this instance only we’re glad that the policy was ignored by our students, by our schools,” board member Katherine Baudouin said. “Our schools played a major role in the development of jazz.”The board discussed the policy at a committee meeting Tuesday and planned to vote Thursday on reversing it.The policy came to the board’s attention after Ken Ducote, executive director of the Greater New Orleans Collaborative of Charter Schools, read a book, “Chord Changes on the Chalkboard: How Public School Teachers Shaped Jazz and the Music of New Orleans,” by Al Kennedy. Kennedy had found out about the policy while doing research.“It’s like if Colorado passed a rule banning students from looking at the Rocky Mountains,” Ducote said

Reports from 1922 quote a then-school board member identified as Mrs. Adolph Baumgartner as one of the early opponents of the genre.“Jazz music and jazz dancing in schools should be stopped at once,” Baumgartner said during a March 1922 meeting. “I have seen a lot of rough dancing in school auditoriums lately.”Kennedy said the ban was likely the school board “reacting to the fears of the day.”“Think of it as an early version of the book ban,” he said. “It seems like they were more afraid of it being a bad influence than anything else.”Advertisement Current board member Carlos Zervigon introduced the motion to reverse the ban at Tuesday’s meeting.School Board President Olin Parker said the policy was “rooted in racism” and noted that the ban didn’t prevent “the tremendous contributions of our students and especially of our band directors whose legacy continues from 1922 on now through the Carnival season.”Ducote said the school board’s current practices require considerable public input before new policies are adopted. That prevents board members from passing new policies on a whim, as was done in 1922.

Fezco, Dog Ditched At Shelter Because Owners Thought He Was Gay, Got Adopted

Fezco has a new home and name. The North Carolina dog — who was dumped at a shelter by his owners because he humped another male dog and the owners feared he was gay — has been adopted. Advertisement The Stanly County Animal Protective Services in Albemarle posted on Facebook Tuesday that Fezco had found new humans to love him for who he is — pelvic gyrations and all.The shelter also confirmed to HuffPost that the dog’s new owners are Steve Nichols and his longtime partner John, who spoke to TMZ on Tuesday about why they welcomed the very friendly pooch into their home. The couple said they renamed Fezco “Oscar” after the Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde — who was gay. Nichols told TMZ that they felt an immediate connection to Oscar and his story because they have been also faced discrimination. The couple added that Oscar’s previous owners were not only bigoted, but apparently pretty bad at taking care of him — the dog hasn’t been neutered and has heartworms. Advertisement Oscar’s new owners told the website that they intend to nurse the pup back to health. The couple already has another dog named Harry, a terrier-Chihuahua mix, who’s around to help lift Oscar’s furry spirit. So there you have it. It seems that Fezco/Oscar got over the hump.

Clueless Bear Picks The Wrong Fight With The Wrong Pigs On The Wrong Day

A bear in Connecticut got more than it bargained for when it picked a fight with two pigs. Instead of a quick snack, the bear soon found itself in a fight of its life with two Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs in New Milford: Advertisement Owners Kevin David and Rebecca Shaw told local media the pigs’ names are Hammy and Mary. “I am very proud of them because Hammy, the little one especially, he’s afraid of his own shadow and the way he came charging out when he seen Mary tussling with the bear,” Shaw told NBC Connecticut. “He was like, ‘Oh no, no way, get out.’”Despite the bear battle, the pigs were no worse for wear.“They’re fine,” David told WTNH, the ABC station in New Haven. “They’re some heavy pigs and we’re pretty sure that bear is still a cub.”Fox 61 noted that the Connecticut legislature is considering a bill that would legalize the shooting and killing of “nuisance” bears in some situations, such as the destruction of crops and beehives.

A man was arrested after calling a towing service asking to have it removed from woods, authorities said. (Chilton County Sheriff's Office via AP)via Associated PressCLANTON, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama man who called a wrecker service asking to have a 70-ton crane pulled out of the woods is now charged with stealing the heavy machinery, sheriff’s officials said. The owner of a towing service contacted the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, saying the man had called claiming someone gave him the crane, and he wanted it removed so he could sell it for scrap, the agency said in a statement

The wrecker service owner recalled moving the same crane a few years before and contacted its owner, who denied having given it away. The towing operator then called law enforcement. The man who wanted the crane moved fled before officers arrived, driving the rig into a ditch where it became stuck. The 26-year-old Clanton man was arrested Tuesday on a probation violation and first-degree theft charges. Court records didn’t include the name of a defense attorney who could speak on his behalf.“We have worked a lot of theft cases over the years, but this one definitely takes first place in the heavyweight category,” Sheriff John Shearon’s office said in a statement, thanking the wrecker service.___In a story published March 18, 2022, about the alleged theft of a crane, The Associated Press erroneously reported the city where the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office is located as Chilton. It is Clanton, Alabama.

Dog Is Dumped At North Carolina Shelter Because Owners Said It Might Be Gay

A dog in North Carolina is looking for a new home after his previous owners dumped him at an animal shelter because they said they feared he might be gay.“Fezco,” who is described as a 4- to 5-year-old dog of an unknown breed, was recently dropped off at the Stanly County Animal Protective Services in Albemarle

The reason? Fezco apparently humped another male dog, and the dog’s owners assumed the canine was a “gaynine” and didn’t want him around so they left him at the shelter. Now the shelter wants to find Fezco a new home and says he likes people and other animals, according to a report Thursday on Charlotte CW affiliate WCCB. Although Scientific American notes that homosexual behavior has been observed in more than 1,500 animal species, the ASPCA says that it’s common for dogs to mount and thrust against other animals, people and objects, including wadded-up blankets, dog beds and toys, as a form of masturbation or as a response to stress.HuffPost reached out to the shelter to find out if Fezco has been adopted, but no one immediately responded.

New Zealand Couple’s Giant Potato Is Just A Gourd: Guinness World Records

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — When is a potato not a potato? When it’s a tuber of a gourd, according to Guinness World Records

A New Zealand couple who believed they had dug up the world’s largest potato in the garden of their small farm near Hamilton have had their dreams turned to mash after Guinness wrote to say that scientific testing had found it wasn’t, in fact, a potato after all.Colin Craig-Brown, who first hit the tuber with a hoe last August when gardening with his wife Donna, said it sure looked and tasted like a potato. Mind you, he added, he’s never tasted a gourd tuber.“What can you say?” said Craig-Brown. “We can’t say we don’t believe you, because we gave them the DNA stuff.”After months of submitting photos and paperwork, the couple got the bad news from Guinness in an email last week

“Dear Colin,” the email begins, going on to say “sadly the specimen is not a potato and is in fact the tuber of a type of gourd. For this reason we do unfortunately have to disqualify the application.”Donna Craig-Brown holds "Doug" what was believed to be the world's largest potato in the garden of her small farm near Hamilton, New Zealand on Nov. 3, 2021. Donna and her husband Craig have had their dreams turned to mash after Guinness wrote to say that scientific testing had shown it wasn't, in fact, a potato after all, but a tuber of a type of gourd. (Colin Craig-Brown via AP)via Associated PressThe couple had named their find Doug, which they took to spelling Dug, after the way it was unearthed. The tuber became something of a local celebrity, after the couple began posting photos of it on Facebook with a hat on and even built a cart to tow it around. An official weigh-in at a local farming store put Dug at 7.8 kilograms (17 pounds), equal to a couple of sacks of regular potatoes, or one small dog. The existing Guinness record will stand, a 2011 monster from Britain that weighed in at just under 5 kg.Craig-Brown remains a big believer in Dug, who still sits in their freezer

“I say ‘gidday’ to him every time I pull out some sausages. He’s a cool character,” Craig-Brown said. “Whenever the grandchildren come round, they say, ‘Can we see Dug?’”“Dug is the destroyer from Down Under,” Craig-Brown added. “He is the world’s biggest not-a-potato.”Craig-Brown said he’s not done yet with chasing the potato record. Dug was self-sown but Craig-Brown said that with all his subsequent research into giant potatoes, he’s ready to try and deliberately grow a record-breaking monster next season. And this time, it will definitely be a potato.Related...New Zealand Potato Named 'Doug' Just Might Be The World's BiggestGuinness Declares Massive Israeli Strawberry As World’s Heaviest850-Pound Pot Brownie Brings New Meaning To 'Getting Baked'These 107-Year-Old Japanese Sisters Are Now The World's Oldest Twins

Things Get Real Batty When Real Bat Appears During Screening Of 'The Batman'

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Moviegoers in Austin, Texas, got to see more than one type of bat during a screening of “The Batman” this weekend. An actual bat was spotted swooping around inside the theater, putting the movie on pause while management called animal control and tried — unsuccessfully — to get the critter out, KXAN reported Friday

Guests were offered their money back, but most chose to stick it out and watch the film “bat and all,” according to one moviegoer. The Moviehouse & Eatery by Cinépolis says the bat was likely released into the theater as a prank. The theater’s general manager Heidi Deno said they will be “adding additional security and checking all bags upon guest entry.”There were no reports of anyone being bitten during the incident. Giant Porcupine Puppet Provides Quills And Thrills At Los Angeles Park

Los Angeles school children run to see a giant puppet porcupine named Percy at Elysian Park in Los Angeles on Tuesday, March 1, 2022. (AP Photo/Richard Vogel)via Associated PressLOS ANGELES (AP) — It was a quilling experience for all.Percy, a porcupine puppet of prodigious proportions, emerged from her giant stump home for an audience of schoolchildren and media members at a Los Angeles park on Tuesday

The adorable beast inspired oohs and awwws as she blinked her droopy eyes and opened her mouth to show her buck teeth. She stood nearly two stories tall with a nose the size of a Volkswagen.A joint project of the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, Percy was let out to celebrate next week’s opening of the zoo’s new Wildlife Explorers Basecamp.Six months in the planning, the puppet is modeled on the prehensile-tailed porcupine, native to South America. It has a circumference of nearly 40 feet (12 meters), and has 2,000 foam quills that it took a house-worth of paint to put stripes on.“We’ve done some fantasy creatures a little bit bigger, but in terms of duplicating an animal it’s the biggest we’ve ever done,” said Peter Brooke, creative supervisor for Jim Henson’s Creature Shop

The prehensile tail that gives the tree-dwelling, fruit-eating species its name exists in this case in the imagination only. Just the front half exists and pokes out, the rest appearing to stay safely inside the log.“It’s essentially based on a big inflatable with the addition of a mouth, a jaw and mechanical eyes,” Brooke said.A real prehensile-tailed porcupine was at the scene at Elysian Park near Dodger Stadium. The porcupine got “lost” before emerging in her giant puppet form, after the kids brought out bunches of bananas to lure her.“I think she’s getting close, I think I know just the thing for her,” Basecamp performer Jennifer Popagain said before bringing out a giant banana of her own

The kids counted down, then mobbed Percy once she emerged. After another media stop, Percy will make her way down the coast to her permanent home at the San Diego Zoo.The Wildlife Explorers Basecamp is a 3.2-acre area of the zoo intended to teach families about the interactions and interdependence of humans, plants, animals and their habitats.Featured species there will include a tortoise, an ocelot, a caiman, an anteater known as a tamandua, and, of course, a prehensile-tailed porcupine.
