Late Artist Francis Hines Rediscovered After Paintings Found In Dumpster

Jared Whipple stands next to a painting by Francis Hines that was found in a dumpster in Watertown, Conn. in 2017.An exhibit of that art will open May 5 at the Hollis Taggart galley in Southport, which is known for showing the works of lost or forgotten artists. (Scott Whipple via AP)via Associated PressAfter fading into obscurity, the late artist Francis Hines is gaining new attention after a car mechanic rescued hundreds of his paintings from a dumpster in Connecticut.Hines, an abstract expressionist, garnered some recognition in 1980 by using fabric to wrap the arch in New York City’s Washington Square in an intricate crisscross pattern. But he kept a low profile and drifted out of the art world’s spotlight, passing away in 2016

The trove of paintings, most using his signature wrapping style, was found a year later — and that’s where the artist’s path to rediscovery began. An exhibit of the found art will open May 5 at the Hollis Taggart galley in Southport, Connecticut, which is known for showing the works of lost or forgotten artists. A smaller exhibit will be shown simultaneously at the gallery’s flagship location in New York City.Hines made a good living as an illustrator for magazines and the G. Fox department store, and his personal art was about the process, not about selling or displaying his work, said Peter Hastings Falk, an art historian who is helping curate the exhibit. So for decades, once he finished a piece, he would ship it from his New York studio to a barn he was renting in Watertown, Connecticut, where it would be wrapped in plastic and stored

“For him it was like, ‘OK , I did that, that was cool, I’ll put it away,’” Falk said. “Once he was done, he was done and on to the next project. And if you don’t have a gallery selling your work, it’s going to pile up a lot.”Taggart, the gallery’s president and an art collector, said he’d “never seen anything like it before.”“In today’s art world there is a definite interest in different mediums — textiles, fabrics and ceramics — people are trying to find new and innovative ways to present contemporary art,” Taggart said. “He did that back in the ’80s. He was somewhat of a visionary.”Hines used his wrapping technique in other installations, including at JFK Airport and the Port Authority bus terminal. In his sculptures and paintings, he stretched fabric or other material over or through them to create a sense of tension and dynamic energy, Taggart said

Hines’ work remained stored in Watertown until after his death at the age of 96, when his estate decided to dispose of the massive collection because the barn’s owner was selling the property. Two 40-yard (37-meter) dumpsters filled with sculptures and paintings had already been hauled away to a landfill when Jared Whipple, a Waterbury-area mechanic and skateboard enthusiast, got a call from a friend, George Martin, who was helping dispose of the art.Because some of the paintings included images of car parts, Martin thought Whipple might like them.Whipple figured he could use the art in a Halloween display, or to hang at his indoor skateboarding facility. When he began taking the plastic covering off the pieces, he started to realize he’d stumbled onto something special.“But at the same time, you would never think there was any type of importance or value there, because they are all in a dumpster,” he said. Most of the works were signed F. Hines, but Whipple eventually found one small canvas, painted in 1961, that included the artist’s full name: “Francis Mattson Hines.”That’s when the Google searching began and he went down what he called a “rabbit hole” for 4 1/2 years learning about art and knocking on gallery doors, he said. That research led him back to the 1980 Washington Square arch installation, to a book about Hines by his wife, and eventually to Falk and Hines’ two sons, one of whom, Jonathan Hines, is also an artist.Jonathan Hines is now working with Whipple, adding other pieces of his father’s work to the exhibit.“I think that it is fate that Jared would discover my father’s work,” Jonathan Hines said. “It had to be someone from outside the art world. Had I not decided to throw out the art, none of this would have happened.”Advertisement The family knew the artwork had value — but without critical recognition, they made the painful decision to abandon it all, said Falk, the art historian.Hines’ paintings, most of which are owned by Whipple, will be offered for sale at the exhibit, with the larger pieces expected to sell for about $20,000 each, Falk said. But Whipple says it’s not about getting rich from something that was nearly lost to a landfill.“I want to get this artist recognition,” he said. “And I’d like to get him into some major museums maybe, just get him the recognition he deserved.”Falk said Hines should be remembered as an important American artist for how he fits in the timeline of abstract expressionism and his unique twist on the technique of wrapping. The fact that his work was nearly lost forever, he said, merely helps shine a light on it.“Now we’re focused only on the art, not on the fact that it was thrown away, not that it was discovered by a skateboarder car mechanic, not on anything else,” Falk said. “Just the art on its own merit.”Paintings by Francis Hines sit wrapped in plastic in a barn Sept. 27, 2017, in Watertown, Conn. Mars Rover Captures Video Of Potato-Shaped Solar Eclipse

As eclipses go, this one is pretty spectac-tuber.NASA has released dramatic video footage of Phobos, one of Mars’ two moons, crossing the face of the sun

But you’ll notice from the video above that Phobos looks more like a potato than the sphere shape typically associated with planets and moons. The footage, taken by NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover on April 2, lasts a whopping 40 seconds, which NASA notes is much shorter than a typical solar eclipse involving Earth’s moon. Of course, Phobos is also 157 times smaller than Earth’s moon, as well.NASA has filmed Martian eclipses before, but experts say it’s the highest quality footage yet

“I knew it was going to be good, but I didn’t expect it to be this amazing,” Rachel Howson of Malin Space Science Systems in San Diego, one of the team members who operates the camera, said in a press release from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.Sadly, the chances of capturing future Phobos eclipses are declining since the moon is getting closer to the Martian surface and is destined to crash into the planet. On the bright side, scientists say that won’t happen for at least another 10 million years.

Reunited with her phone, she called 911, Manly said.Responding firefighters passed her blocks to stand on to reach a harness, which they used to pull her out of the vault. The Brinnon Fire Department said the woman said she was uninjured

She was washed down and “strongly encouraged to seek medical attention after being exposed to human waste, but she only wanted to leave,” the department said.“I’ve been doing this for 40 years, and that was a first,” Manly said.

Easter Bunny Inadvertently Hands Out Eggs Stuffed With Condoms At Texas Elementary School

A parent dressed as the Easter Bunny inadvertently handed out colorful eggs stuffed with condoms at an elementary school in Austin last week. Most of the eggs were filled with candy, but a handful contained packages of condoms, The Houston Chronicle reported

One father took to Twitter to discuss the incident:A parent showed up at my kids' elementary school dressed as an Easter Bunny during pickup. He handed out eggs, mostly filled with candy. Some with unopened condoms. Not sure this is the Austin weird I signed up for.— Nathan Jensen (@NateMJensen) April 15, 2022 According to a tweet thread among parents, it appeared to be an innocent error, per the Chronicle. One of the parents, who works at a pharmacy, had been dressed as the Easter Bunny for a safe-sex presentation at an area clinic. She kept the costume on when she arrived at the school to pick up her second-grader and was immediately mobbed by the children. In response, the woman handed out eggs filled with candy. When she ran out, she asked her husband to get more and he apparently brought back some bad eggs

“Chaos ensued,” Jenson noted in a tweet. The school district is now reviewing its safety protocols.George P. Bush, a candidate for Texas attorney general, went down a rabbit hole over the incident, calling it “disgusting” and illegal:Not only is this against the law, it’s disgusting. Hungry Javelina Gets Stuck In Car, Goes For Ride In Arizona

A hungry javelina in Arizona ended up going for a drive when it became trapped inside an empty car and bumped it into neutral. (Yavapai County Sheriff's Office via AP)via Associated PressCORNVILLE, Ariz. (AP) — A hungry javelina in Arizona ended up going for a drive when it became trapped inside an empty car and bumped it into neutral.Deputies in Yavapai County responded to a call last week in Cornville, a community 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of Sedona, about a javelina stuck in a Subaru station wagon. Javelinas are pig-like animals that are native to desert environments

After speaking with the car’s owner and other residents, they determined the car’s hatch back had been left open overnight. The javelina jumped in to get to a bag of Cheetos. The hatch then closed, trapping the animal inside.Authorities say the javelina ripped off a portion of the dashboard and the inside of a door in an attempt to escape. The animal then managed to knock the car into neutral, causing it to roll down the driveway and across the street. The Subaru came to a rest, and the javelina was not injured.A deputy opened the hatch, and the javelina was able to run back into the wilderness.

Cargo Jet Splits In Half After Skidding Off Runway In Costa Rica

A DHL cargo jet slid off the runway and broke in half while landing at San Jose’s international airport Thursday, shutting down the airport, but not injuring crew.(AP Photo/Carlos Gonzalez)via Associated PressSAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) — A DHL cargo jet slid off the runway and broke in half while landing at San Jose’s international airport Thursday, shutting down the airport, but not injuring crew. The fire department said the Boeing 757 had taken off from Juan Santamaría Airport just west of the capital, but decided to return after detecting a failure in the hydraulic system

Héctor Chaves, director the Costa Rica Fire Department, said that upon landing the aircraft skidded, turned and broke in two, exposing its cargo.“Units mobilized to remove the pilot and co-pilot,” Chaves said. “Then they applied foam to prevent a spill and now they are working on an earthen dike to avoid any fuel from reaching the drainage system.”A spokesman for cargo carrier DHL said both pilots were unharmed but one was being undergoing a medical check as a precaution.DHL spokesman Daniel McGrath said the company was working with airport authorities to move the plane so flights could resume. He said an investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the incident

DHL is a subsidiary of Deutsche Post DHL Group.Luis Miranda, deputy director of civil aviation for Costa Rica, said the plane had gone only about 35 miles from the airport when it requested permission to turn back from its planned flight to Guatemala City. He said the pilot and co-pilot were the only crew members aboard the plane, which was carrying only about 2½ hours worth of fuel. .The airport administration said the crash would keep the airport closed to incoming and outgoing flights until at least 6 p.m. Some flights would be diverted to Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia, about 125 miles northwest of San Jose.

Monkeys Near Florida Airport Becoming Simian Celebrities

DANIA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — As departing jetliners roared overhead, an aging vervet monkey moped on a mangrove branch one recent afternoon in the woods he inhabits near a South Florida airport, his ego bruised.Mikey, as he is called by his human observers, has long been the laid-back alpha male of a troop of monkeys ruling this tract of land, tucked off a busy runway at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. But this day he lost when challenged by a feisty youngster called Spike. Mikey fled screaming and was now sullenly staring at humans watching him from 15 feet (4 meters) away

“Did you have a bad day?” asks Deborah “Missy” Williams, a Lynn University science professor who has been studying the troop and others nearby since 2014. She is also founder of the Dania Beach Vervet Project, which seeks to preserve this unique colony. “We will leave you alone so you can ponder.”The United States has no native monkeys, but the smallish vervets have roamed Dania Beach since the late 1940s after a dozen brought from West Africa fled a now long-closed breeding facility and roadside zoo. Today, 40 descendants are broken into four troops living within 1,500 acres (600 hectares) around the airport. Florida also has a few colonies of escaped macaques and squirrel monkeys.Florida wildlife officials often kill invasive species to protect native animals. But they tolerate the vervets, if they stay put. The monkeys are local celebrities, their travails detailed by TV and newspapers, and popular visitors with nearby workers, who feed them despite signs saying that’s illegal.“My friends are like, ‘You have monkeys at your job?’” laughed airport parking lot attendant Harlen Caldera as she gave them raisins and nuts. Some ate from her hand, while others snatched what food she scattered

Travelers are often surprised to see the monkeys. They squeal in delight and grab their cellphones, hoping for photos. Vervets are gray and black with a greenish tinge, helping them blend into the trees. Males typically grow to 2 feet (0.6 meters) and 15 pounds (6.8 kilograms); females reach 18 inches (0.5 meters) and 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms). They live about 20 years.Caldera and her coworkers are protective of the monkeys, which have no fear of humans, making sure no one tries to catch or harm them. “You never know what people will do,” she said. The entrance to the 16 acres (6.5 hectares) ruled by Mikey, the matriarch, Snow White, and their troop is at the parking lot’s rear, sealed by a locked fence. The mangrove trees are thick and the trail muddy — except where it’s covered in shallow water.Williams began studying monkeys while doing doctoral work at Florida Atlantic University, and stayed on. As she and her guests waded deeper into the monkeys’ grounds one recent afternoon, the 16-member troop approached. The colony lives on spiders, ants, lizards, seeds and flowers — when not scrounging people food

“They quickly learn to adapt to a human diet — they love sugary things and salty things,” Williams said, noting they tolerate human food remarkably well.In Africa, vervets are eaten by leopards, eagles and snakes. But in Florida the dangers are outside the mangroves — mostly cars and trappers, who sell them as pets.Because of their small population, Williams is concerned inbreeding will harm the monkeys’ health. In Africa, vervet males leave their birth troop when they reach sexual maturity at 5 years and join another. They move again every few years. With only four local troops, there isn’t enough rotation among the males, making the genetic pool small. As monkeys are an invasive species, Florida puts tight restrictions on how Williams’ group can help them. Trapped monkeys can’t be released — they must be euthanized or placed into captivity. As Williams doesn’t believe monkeys should be pets, she doesn’t seek veterinary care for seriously injured and ill monkeys, hoping nature will heal them. But her group is building an enclosure for vervets captured for treatment or because they wandered too far.Ultimately, Williams wants Florida to allow the release of captured vervets. Unlike Burmese pythons, iguanas and other invasive species, she argues, the colony doesn’t harm the environment.“The monkeys’ lives matter regardless if they are nonnative or native,” she said. “All options should be exhausted to avoid euthanasia.” Her models show that without change, the colony will die off within 50 years. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission responded that while the colony can remain, no exception allowing the monkeys’ release after capture can be made because their effects on the ecosystem are “not well understood.”“There is also an inherent risk of injury when handling wildlife. Monkeys can act defensively and may bite or scratch. Mammals, including vervet monkeys, may harbor diseases transmissible to humans including rabies,” the statement said.As darkness neared, the troop moved from the mangroves into the airport parking lot. It’s dinner time and there are seeds to pluck and workers’ treats to get. Some played while others groomed each other. Spike and Mikey again tussled before Williams’ admonition separated them. The aging king and his would-be heir then sat feet apart, eyeing each other warily.Soon sated, the monkeys climbed back into their trees to spend another night in their unexpected realm, paying no heed to the loud metallic birds flying above.
