BLT-errifying! Dead Rodent Found In Subway Sandwich

When Matt Jones and Jay Armstead entered a Subway restaurant in Lincoln City, Oregon, it surely wasn't for the mouse muffaletta.

But that's essentially what Armstead says he got Oct. 6, when he ordered an Italian sandwich only to find a dead rodent in it, USA Today reports.

Jones snapped a photo of his friend's sandwich, making this the first time in history when it's not totally annoying to share a picture of a meal to Facebook. USA Today offers Jones's take:

“It’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen, but it’s also the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen,” Jones said, recalling his initial reaction. “I laughed because I was like, there is no way this just happened.”

After the incident, Subway employees immediately offered each customer a refund and a replacement Subway sandwich.

The incident occurred around 2 p.m., and the county health department arrived immediately after to investigate. Health officials concluded the rodent did not come from inside the facility, but instead was accidentally packaged in a bag of spinach from a third-party supplier.

As USA reports:

“They [health inspectors] consulted with physicians and we followed their advice that, although it is not very appetizing, the risk of someone becoming sick due to eating lettuce with those particular circumstances were very low,” explained Cheryl Connell, Dir. Of Lincoln County Health and Human Services.

Regardless, Subway employees immediately cleaned the facilities. Subway also issued the following statement, as reported by USA Today:

KGW called Subway franchise headquarters for comment, and they issued this statement:

“As soon as the customer alerted the owner about what happened, they were immediately given a full refund and an investigation was launched. To be cautious, all of the products in the sandwich unit were disposed of and a thorough cleaning took place, in which the Health Department gave the restaurant a clean bill of health. There were no other complaints made.”

Officials aren't sure whether the creature in the sandwich is definitely a mouse, a statement that doesn't make anyone feel better at all.
