Sheriff's Office Honors Beloved Dying K-9 With Emotional Last Call

This police dog received a fitting tribute for a treasured member of law enforcement.

Argo, a Czech German shepherd, was a valuable member of the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office in Texas, serving as a narcotics detection dog and a police tracking dog. Sadly, the canine died this month after a battle with bone cancer.

Before Argo's death, the Sheriff's Office honored the beloved pup with a traditional last radio call -- a custom often performed to pay tribute to a fallen officer. The emotional moment was captured in a video

"Sheriff's Office to K-9 Argo. Sheriff's Office to K-9 Argo," the dispatcher can be heard saying in the video. "Sheriff's Office to K-9 Argo. End of watch for K-9 Argo on Oct. 10, 2015. Rest in peace K-9 Argo."

The video, which was shared on the Sheriff's Office Facebook page last week, struck a chord with people across the Internet and generated more than 375,000 views as of Monday afternoon.

According to the clip's description, the last call was done as part of a small and private ceremony. Argo was later put down, as the cancer had been detected all over his body and the dog was in pain because of it.

Argo leaves behind a noble legacy. The Facebook post mentions that he was partnered with Lt. Francisco Guerrero and had helped take thousands of pounds of drugs off the streets. The pup also helped capture criminals. Even after the dog was diagnosed with cancer, the post says that Argo "refused to let it slow him down."

The Sheriff's Office will continue to celebrate the dog's life and in November, Argo will be honored at the HCSO First Annual South Texas K9 Competition.
