LONDON (AP) — A British jihadi who faked his own death faces a prison term after pleading guilty to terrorism offenses.
Imran Khawaja had been arrested when he tried to return to Britain last year after attending a terrorist training camp in Syria. His guilty plea could not be reported until Tuesday when reporting restrictions were lifted.
The 27-year-old had asked his taxi-driver cousin Tahir Bhatti to pick him up in Bulgaria and bring him back to Britain by car.
While they were driving, his death on the battlefield was falsely announced in Syria by associates.
He was arrested in June last year entering Britain at the port of Dover.
His cousin has also pleaded guilty to a lesser offense. They will be sentenced next month.
