What The Hell Is A 'Fire Challenge,' And How Could It Not Go Horribly Wrong?

We see a lot of raw stuff around here, but this appalling video sets a new bar for inexplicable actions.

Footage of this "fire challenge" shows a man putting flammable liquid on his naked torso. He then asks for a lighter and intentionally ignites the liquid, causing him to run screaming for water to put the fire out.

We're basically speechless. We hang out with guys who eat lightbulbs, and we're still shocked. Granted, those guys are trained professional performers, where as this appears to be a misguided youth. The scariest part is that he's not the only person who is doing this.

Video of the incident was posted to LiveLeak, described as a "Fire Challenge Gone Wrong."

This begs several questions, the two most prominent of which are "What is a fire challenge?" and "Why would you ever attempt it?" A not-so-distant third is "How does this not go wrong?"

Well, as the New York Daily News reports:

It seems the point of the challenge is to spray a small amount of flammable liquid like alcohol or perfume on an area of the body and light it on fire for a few moments... Accidents seem to happen if too much liquid is spread or they are unable to extinguish the flame quickly enough.

The reasoning behind it is less clear.

"I don't know, I wasn't thinking really," a 15-year-old Kentucky boy who burned himself in a fire challenge told WKYT.

Time to start thinking, guys. Time to start thinking really, really hard.
