Thankfully, at least in this instance, there is a mediator (the bulldog) who is trusted by the opposing parties and committed to brokering a swift and long-lasting peace.
It's also possible the bulldog is trying to claw the eyes of the two other dogs, leaving the chew toy unattended and ready for the taking.
But in these bleak times, we need something to believe in and it's difficult for us to face the prospect that the bulldog is simply acting with his narrow self-interest in mind.
