What Year's Worth Of Campus Blotter Reports For One Party School Looks Like

The University of Arizona has a reputation as a party school. It may not be at the top of the list these days, like Arizona State University is, but there's little question they like to get rowdy.

But what does that mean for students getting busted around campus for partying?

To examine this, the Arizona Daily Wildcat, UA's student newspaper, was gracious enough to share the entries from their "Police Beat" for the 2013-14 academic year. We previously did this with Dartmouth College and took a dive into arrests at the University of Iowa, the reigning No. 1 party school.

The result is a year's worth of entries, laid out to show how often students get caught.

Some portions are highlighted in bold as particularly noteworthy, unusual, or because they show the danger of getting too intoxicated. Hopefully this will just remind you to be safe if you go out drinking this school year.

We also began to notice there are quite a few stoners at UA. Out of a total of 156 incidents, we counted 56 weed-related busts -- or about one-third.

Read the whole list and head to the Daily Wildcat's website or social media accounts to keep up with everything else happening at UA. The campus blotter was too long to put into the entry, so we've put it in a 73 page Scridb document below.

University of Arizona - Campus Blotter by Tyler Kingkade

Here are a few interesting entries to get you started:

August 27

On Aug. 22 at approximately 3:40 a.m., a UA student was diverted to the Dean of Students for a Minor in Bodily Possession of Alcohol, after a UAPD officer noticed him sleeping in an enclosed trash area on campus.

The officer was unable to verbally wake the man and had to shake him to wake him up. The man smelled strongly of alcohol and struggled to provide his name and identification. When the student stood up, the officer noticed he was swaying and had to lean against the wall for support. His eyes were also watery and bloodshot. The officer read the student his Miranda rights and asked him if he had been drinking. The student said yes and added that he had been drinking vodka.

He also stated that he had been drinking at a residence hall with friends, but he refused to give any names or who provided the alcohol. He said after drinking he needed to “walk it off,” but had become lost and sat down to get his bearings. The officer diverted him to the Dean of Students and took him back to his dorm.

August 29

A UA student was cited and released for possession of marijuana on Aug. 26, after he drove by a University of Arizona Police Department officer in the Main Gate Parking Garage at approximately 10:25 a.m. The officer smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the rolled down driver’s side window when the car passed him.

The officer followed the vehicle on bike until it parked, then told the driver why he had stopped him and asked for identification. The officer didn’t find anything when he searched the student’s vehicle, but when he searched the student, he felt what seemed to be a bag of some kind near the groin area. The officer asked the student what he had concealed in his shorts and the student said, “It’s the marijuana.”

The officer then told the student that he really did not want to unzip his shorts to retrieve it, so the student unzipped his shorts and removed an 8” by 8” plastic Ziploc bag filled with a substance he said was marijuana.

When questioned, the student told the officer that he had had the marijuana for about a week, and that he had paid $600 for it. He would not say where he bought it or from whom, only that he had paid $600 because “it was some good shit.”

He also told the officer that he usually smokes at home, though he sometimes smokes before working out at the Student Recreation Center. The student was cited and released and referred to the dean of students. The marijuana, which weighed approximately 59.9 grams, was placed into evidence.

September 11

A UA student was transported to the University of Arizona Medical Center by ambulance for extreme intoxication on Saturday at approximately 2:15 a.m.

An officer went to a residence hall at approximately 1:54 a.m. in response to a call for medical assistance. When the officer arrived, a woman was lying on the floor in a dorm room, being evaluated by Student Emergency Medical Services.

The woman was uncooperative and was not answering SEMS’s questions. She smelled strongly of alcohol, and it looked like she had urinated in the room. The room’s resident identified the woman and said she believed she lived on the third floor of a different residence hall.

The resident then told the officer that the woman on the floor had started drinking at 2 p.m. on Friday and continued drinking until midnight. They had attended a party together at a house north of campus, where the woman had had mixed drinks and had possibly taken shots as well. She had to be carried back up to the dorm room, the resident added.

Tucson Fire Department then arrived to evaluate the woman, who continued to be uncooperative and at one point told the paramedic to “fuck off,” giving him the middle finger.

When another member of TFD asked her what her date of birth was, she responded, “Birth control.”

TFD said that the woman was not medically cleared to stay on campus and had an ambulance transport her to UAMC for treatment.

At approximately 5:45 a.m., the officer followed up with the girl in her hospital room, where she was arrested, cited and released for minor in possession of liquor in body. She was also issued a code of conduct violation through the Dean of Students office.

September 30

Two UA students were cited and released for minor in possession on Sept. 21 at 1:04 a.m. Two UAPD officers were on patrol near a residence hall when they spotted two students, a man and a woman, leaving a cab. The students were holding each other tightly and leaning against one another as they walked to their dorm.

Neither of the students could walk straight. As they tried to walk over the curb, they tripped and almost fell down.

UAPD officers approached the students to question them separately. The man said he had just left a house on Greek Row but couldn’t remember which one. He said he drank a lot of jungle juice.

While he was speaking, the man started vomiting. After he finished, he said he felt better. When questioned by an officer, the woman said she had a lot of money and was wondering how much the arrest would cost. She then said she was 92 years old but corrected her age to 19, both of which were incorrect.

The Tucson Fire Department was called because of the high level of intoxication of the woman. She was told she was getting a minor in possession but didn’t understand so the officers repeated it to her six times. After the woman was released by the TFD, she was taken to her room. TFD also took the man up to his room where his roommate promised to take care of him. Both students received code of conduct violations, which were sent to the Dean of Students office.

October 2

A UA student was arrested and booked by University of Arizona Police Department officers on Sept. 21 at 12:05 a.m. for minor in bodily possession of alcohol in a residence hall.

UAPD officers went to the dorm to speak to a drunken student who had pushed two RAs while trying to get back to his room, after he was seen drunk at a social event in the men’s wing of the dorm. The event was shut down after RAs found out that alcohol was being served.

The student could barely walk and refused to go back to his room until he was told he was going to get written up. Ten minutes later, RAs went to the student’s room and found five men drinking jungle juice. When the RAs accused the student of drinking jungle juice, he got angry and told the RAs to call the police.

When officers arrived, an RA took them to the student’s room. The student opened the door but stood in the doorway with the door partially closed behind him. He said that he hadn’t touched any women that night, but may have touched some men “in a friendly way.” He also denied that he had told anyone to call the police.

The student smelled strongly of alcohol and had red, bloodshot eyes. He refused to take a preliminary breath test, then tried to shut the door on police officers, saying that he no longer wanted to speak to them and was ready to go back into his room.

As he tried to shut the door, an officer grabbed the student’s arm and took him into the hallway. As the student could not stand up straight, the officer instructed him to sit by the wall, but the student refused. The officer repeated his instructions and the student again refused.

As the officers continued speaking to him, the student began showing mood swings. He was joking and lighthearted one moment, then uncooperative and angry the next. At one point, he tried to convince an officer to punch him, saying, “I can sue the shit out of you.”

At that point, the student was handcuffed, arrested and booked into Pima County Jail.

***

A UA student was taken from a UA residence hall to the University of Arizona Medical Center for extreme intoxication on Sept 21 at 2:31 a.m. At 2:17 a.m., a UAPD officer responded to a call from the students’ roommate, who was worried about how drunk the student was. The Tucson Fire Department responded as well.

The student smelled strongly of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes and there was vomit next to his bed. As a TFD official looked through the student’s wallet for a valid I.D., a fake I.D. fell out. When the student was asked where he was really from, he replied, “Alcohol.”

TFD decided the student was not OK so stay in his room for the night and took him to UAMC, where he was monitored overnight. The student was cited and released for minor in bodily possession of alcohol and possession of a fictitious out-of-state drivers license. A code of conduct violation was sent to the Dean of Students office.

January 29

Two UA students were arrested and released for underage drinking last Sunday. While patrolling First Street and Vine Avenue, an officer noticed two women in an odd situation: one was lying with half of her body on the sidewalk and half in a bush, and the other woman was standing over her, trying to get her out of the bush.

When the officer pulled over, the women began to walk away. The officer asked them to stop after he noticed that the woman who had been in the bush could barely walk, and asked if they needed medical attention. They both replied no and said they were just trying to get home.

When the officer asked the woman why she had been lying in the bushes, she claimed she had fallen because she was tired from walking.

While talking to the women, the officer could smell alcohol on both of their breaths and saw they both had bloodshot eyes. He asked them where they were coming from, and they replied, “A house on Greek Row.”

“The frat boys kicked us out,” one of them said.

They would not specify which house they were drinking at, and kept asking the officer to give them a warning so they wouldn’t get in trouble. Both girls were arrested on charges of underage drinking and were released at the scene. They were diverted to the Dean of Students Office.

Flying Ax Smashes Windshield On Car Ride From Hell (PHOTO)

TOPSFIELD, Mass. (AP) — It was a scary moment on a highway north of Boston when an ax smashed through the windshield of a car.

Massachusetts State Police say the ax bounced out of a landscaper's dump truck at about 11 a.m. Wednesday on southbound Interstate 95 in Topsfield. They released a photo showing the ax with a corner of its blade stuck in the passenger side of the car's dashboard. The handle was sticking through the windshield.

Police say the car's passenger was "shaken up" but not hurt.

The truck driver, from Peabody, Massachusetts, was cited for failing to secure the ax, which carries a $200 fine.

Police say it could have been worse if the car's driver hadn't been obeying the 65 mph speed limit.

Police aren't identifying the motorists.

This 'Intactivist' Dropped Out Of College To Make A Statement Against Circumcision

Evan Roman was circumcised as a child, and he's never gotten over it. In fact, he's so passionately against parents circumcising their newborn sons that he dropped out of college to defend the principle.

Roman is an "intactivist," the name for advocates who support keeping a man's foreskin intact unless he makes the decision himself -- as an adult -- to remove it. Intactivists say circumcision reduces the sensitivity of the penis, and they feel it's not a parent's place to make body modifications that make sex less enjoyable later in life. Roman's own mother publicly apologized for having him circumcised, but he says he still can't move past his anger.

He also wasn't able to forgive his college for a professor's words on circumcision, he told HuffPost Live on Monday. Roman ultimately dropped out of Colorado State University following a lecture that he disagreed with.

"I was very vocal about this on campus, and I attended a lecture from a teacher, and from what the teacher said about circumcision, I was extremely offended and saw it was completely wrong and biased," Roman said.

Roman said he complained to a faculty member above the professor and was told the teacher had said nothing that was "scientifically or morally wrong."

"[The administration] understood that she was teaching that this is OK to do to children, that it's a parent's choice, and that was the point she was trying to make, and that was the point they were OK with," he said.

The arguments made by men like Roman have made waves online, as evidenced by a Slate piece that called intactivists a "fringe group" that has "hijacked the conversation, dismissing science, slamming reason, and tossing splenetic accusations at anyone who dares question their conspiracy theory."

To date, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Urological Association are both supportive of circumcision as a choice for newborn males.

Stanley Kubrick's Estate Still Has All Of The Orgy Masks From 'Eyes Wide Shut' Hanging In Its Halls

"Eyes Wide Shut," which premiered 15 years ago this month, has made its mark as not just Kubrick's final film, but one that refused its potential to legitimize the NC-17 rating and somehow managed to make us feel sorry for Tom Cruise. After a record-breaking production period, Kubrick sent the studio a final cut, dying less than a week later. For the "Eyes Wide Shut" anniversary, Warner Brothers EVP Jeff Baker visited Kubrick's estate to work on a documentary* about the director who Hollywood had begun to understand as a recluse.

"He was just shy with the press," Baker said to HuffPost Entertainment, reflecting on his time spent with Kubrick's children and widow Christiane Kubrick. "He had an unusual situation because of the size and scope of his estate. All of his pre- and post-production took place in that estate ... and he often filmed near his home."

That home, mind you, is decorated with paintings featured in Cruise and Nicole Kidman's apartment in the film -- many of which are the work of Christiane -- and includes a wall decorated with many of the venetian masks worn during the indelible orgy scene. "It's interesting that he not only brought those props home, but wanted them hung up in his home," Baker said.

eyeswide

Another unique thing Baker noted is Kubrick's involvement in the downstream marketing of the film. Kubrick was actively involved in developing campaigns for theatrical releases and home entertainment. In terms of the latter, "Eyes Wide Shut" has done exceedingly well, selling over $3.5 million copies worldwide. "Maybe not compared to today with a film like 'Frozen,'" Baker said. "But for a film that’s 15 years old and grew up in the VHS days we’ve had good success."

"I think the whole idea from Stanley was to tantalize a little bit and a little bit and a little bit," Nancy Kirkpatrick, the spokeswoman for the film, told the L.A. Times. "It's a smart strategy; so dramatic. A little bit gives you a lot."

Despite the film's clever marketing, it did not perform exceedingly well at the box office -- a fact that has been partially attributed to the public's waiting to learn the fate of John F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife Caroline, who died in a plane crash on opening weekend. Yet, Baker is hesitant to signal that as an unusual event in terms of its impact on sales. "I wouldn't say 'Eyes Wide Shut' is unique in that regard," he said. "It's happened many times in history."

He further emphasized how unusual it was for a director / producer to be part of that process. "He was just very protective over the films that he produced and directed to the point where he didn’t want to hand it off to the studio," he said.

That element of Kubrick's personality was in full force during "Eyes Wide Shut," a reality that is best evidenced by the fact that the principle photography extended over two years. Cruise and Kidman signed open contracts for their work, originally expected to last six months. Instead, the couple spent 15 months filming (which, as Vanity Fair notes, is the Guiness World Record for the longest continual film shoot).

Though few actors have spoken out about the rigor of their work on set, it has become clear that Kubrick demanded perfection. Baker recounted one scene between Cruise and Sydney Pollack that took three weeks to film and required over 200 takes. "He was obsessed with getting the right shot," Baker said. Most directors are, but it was different with Kubrick. Vanity Fair further recalls that he sent a designer to Manhattan in order to ensure the Greenwich Village streets were recreated to be precisely the same size.

In all of that protective perfectionism, Warner Brothers knew that Kubrick would never have wanted his final cut altered to avoid an R rating. And based on the fact that he mounted the venetian masks on the walls of his estate, we can at least assumed the orgy scene was important to him.

"Obscuring the scene to make it fit an R-rating was not something Kubrick wanted. He was vehemently opposed to it," Baker said. Yet, when they received an NC-17 designation from the MPAA, Warner Brothers choose to digitally alter the masked orgy scene, adding in figures to obscure various sexual acts. "Clearly from a commercial and monetization perspective, it would limit the number of theaters that would distribute it and the number of people that would see it if it did have that harsher rating."

*Warner Brothers will release the Kubrick documentary along with a box set of his work by the end of the year. It will likely contain an NC-17 cut of "Eyes Wide Shut." Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/07/30/stanley-kubrick-eyes-wide_n_5627601.html?utm_hp_ref=weird-news&ir=Weird+News

What The Hell Is A 'Fire Challenge,' And How Could It Not Go Horribly Wrong?

We see a lot of raw stuff around here, but this appalling video sets a new bar for inexplicable actions.

Footage of this "fire challenge" shows a man putting flammable liquid on his naked torso. He then asks for a lighter and intentionally ignites the liquid, causing him to run screaming for water to put the fire out.

We're basically speechless. We hang out with guys who eat lightbulbs, and we're still shocked. Granted, those guys are trained professional performers, where as this appears to be a misguided youth. The scariest part is that he's not the only person who is doing this.

Video of the incident was posted to LiveLeak, described as a "Fire Challenge Gone Wrong."

This begs several questions, the two most prominent of which are "What is a fire challenge?" and "Why would you ever attempt it?" A not-so-distant third is "How does this not go wrong?"

Well, as the New York Daily News reports:

It seems the point of the challenge is to spray a small amount of flammable liquid like alcohol or perfume on an area of the body and light it on fire for a few moments... Accidents seem to happen if too much liquid is spread or they are unable to extinguish the flame quickly enough.

The reasoning behind it is less clear.

"I don't know, I wasn't thinking really," a 15-year-old Kentucky boy who burned himself in a fire challenge told WKYT.

Time to start thinking, guys. Time to start thinking really, really hard.

Here's What Happens When You Fool Around On Train Tracks (VIDEO)

A train engineer in Indiana thought he killed two women when they disappeared under his 100-car coal train earlier this month.

Dramatic video released this week shows the two unidentified women clambering to get out of the way as the engineer throws on his emergency brakes. Miraculously, they survived with little more than a stubbed toe.

They were allegedly trespassing on Shuffle Creek Bridge, northeast of Bloomington, on July 10, according to WTHR. Once they realized there was a train barreling toward them, they had two options: Jump and face an 80-foot fall to the ground below, or lie down on the tracks. Apparently, they chose the latter.

"When the trains topped, the two women crawled out from under the engine, started running this way," Eric Powell with Indiana Railroad told WTHR. "He yelled back and asked them, 'Are you okay?' One yelled she had stubbed her toe, [but was] otherwise fine. I'm sure their nerves were as shattered as his were."

Before they made contact, however, the train engineer had feared the worst and called authorities. The women fled, but police later caught up to them and they'll likely face charges, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Indiana Railroad released a statement reporting that 908 people were killed in the United States by trespassing on railroads in 2013, and 38 of them were in Indiana. All railroad tracks are private property. Don't follow in these ladies' footsteps.

Naked Man Breaks Into Home, Takes Nap: Cops

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- A New Mexico man faces charges after authorities say a couple found him naked and sleeping in their bed.

Investigators say 30-year-old Freddy Shelby of Albuquerque was arrested Sunday after the homeowners called police to report their unwanted mystery guest.

According to a criminal complaint, Shelby broke into the couple's home through a window and grabbed a Sprite from the refrigerator before falling asleep in the master bedroom. Authorities say the homeowners found a disrobed Shelby in a deep sleep.

Officers arrived and called to the man, but he slept through it. Authorities say Shelby woke up only after an officer ripped the blankets off him.

Shelby told officers he thought he was at his girlfriend's house.

He was charged with breaking and entering. It wasn't immediately known if he had an attorney. Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/07/30/naked-man-breaks-into-home_n_5633819.html?utm_hp_ref=weird-news&ir=Weird+News

Indianapolis Man Wins $1 Million Lottery Prize For 2nd Time In 3 Months

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — An Indianapolis man has won two $1 million lottery prizes in the past three months.

Hoosier Lottery officials say Robert Hamilton won $1 million from a scratch-off ticket he bought last week at an Indianapolis convenience store. His other big winner came in April in western Indiana's Jasonville while traveling to a conference.

Hamilton says he used his first prize to pay off debts, buy a home and invest in his business. He now plans to buy a motorcycle.

The lottery says Hamilton's tickets are among eight top prizes for its $120 Million Cash Spectacular Scratch-off game. Lottery officials say the odds of winning a top prize from the game are one in 2.1 million.

Pit Bulls Attack Their Human... WITH KISSES

This post is part of HuffPost's ongoing #PitBullWeek coverage.

Charity the pit bull wakes her dad every morning by licking his face until he can't take it anymore. It's been her routine for a long time now.

Hazel, a foster mutt with a magnificent set of lower teeth, is a new addition to Charity's household, and her daily goings-on aren't quite so well developed just yet.

One recent morning, "I brought Hazel into the room not knowing what she would do," says foster mom Kimberly Rodriguez, a police sergeant in Baltimore County, Maryland. "She is still a puppy, so she tends to follow Charity’s lead."

What happened is that "Charity started kissing and Hazel didn’t want to be left out," Rodriguez says. And, here, you can see it for yourself:

Rodriguez has two dogs, two step-children, a husband, and a long history of fostering homeless pups: Hazel -- who was bought off Craigslist in May by a concerned volunteer for a Baltimore-based rescue group -- is her eighth, arriving just after number seven found a permanent home.

"We were supposed to be taking a break when I came across her story on Facebook," Rodriguez says. "How can you resist her grumpy little face and underbite, especially when her lip gets stuck on her tooth?"

hazel

You really just can't, is the answer. Carrie Rauer, the person who first spotted Hazel being sold online, tells HuffPost that as soon as she saw the photos accompanying the ad -- which offered Hazel for $15 -- $10 if the buyer came within an hour -- she was hooked.

"How could I not save that face?" she says. "I offered them $100 not to let anyone else have her and went and picked her up."

Hazel is up for adoption now -- she's thought to be younger than 1, and her adoption page claims Dogue de Bordeaux provenance, but "I would say she is a pit/boxer mix," Rauer says -- and the hope is that someone with long-term intentions will now find themselves irresistibly drawn to Hazel's funny mug.

hazel the pit bull

"I just want her to get an amazing home. She's been bounced around and she gets so attached and she is so loving. She hates to be alone. For even a second," says Rauer.

Rodriguez agrees. "Hazel is still just a puppy learning the way of the world. She is very sweet and craves human attention," she says. "In fact, she hasn’t met a person she didn’t like. There is nothing more she would like to do than cuddle up with her people to take a snooze."

The lucky people who get those cuddly snoozes had better be ready for a regular daybreak attack of kisses, now that Hazel has developed a taste for morning breath. They're also likely to have their ears assaulted -- not to mention their heartstrings yanked -- by these quite spectacularly adorable snores.

Find out more about Hazel from Tara's House Animal Rescue -- and get in touch at arin.greenwood@huffingtonpost.com if you've got an animal story to share, or if you can explain -- once and for all, dagnabit -- why it's so cute when dogs snore, but so not cute when humans do the same. Why is that?!

HuffPost Green is launching a week-long, community-driven effort to bust the myths and raise awareness about pit bulls, a maligned "breed" that often bears the brunt of dated, discriminatory legislation that can make it near impossible for these dogs to find a forever home. 101 Geysers Discovered On Saturn's Icy Moon Enceladus

The icy Saturn moon Enceladus sports at least 101 geysers, which reach all the way down to the satellite's subsurface ocean, new research suggests.

Scientists mapped out 101 geysers of water vapor and ice near Enceladus' south pole after analyzing images captured by NASA's Cassini spacecraft over a period of nearly seven years. This effort also helped astronomers trace the eruptions to their source, researchers said.

Cassini first spotted geysers erupting from four "tiger stripe" fractures on Enceladus — a 310-mile-wide (500 kilometers) moon covered by an icy shell — in 2005, but their origin remains the subject of some debate to this day. [Photos: Enceladus, Saturn's Cold, Bright Moon]

enceladus geyser

Graphic showing a 3D model of 98 geysers spotted by a Cassini imaging survey of Enceladus' south polar region.

For example, some scientists think the geysers are driven by frictional heat generated when the tiger stripes' walls rub together. This scenario implies that the plumes consist of material from Enceladus' surface, or just beneath it.

But other researchers posit that the geysers reach all the way down to the ocean of liquid water that sloshes beneath Enceladus' icy shell, and that they blast into space when the fractures open up. If this is the case, future spacecraft that collect material from the plumes could sample this ocean without even touching down on the moon — a prospect that excites astrobiologists, who view Enceladus as one of the solar system's best bets to host alien life.

Researchers compared the locations of the newly mapped 101 geysers with precision data gathered in 2010 by Cassini's heat-sensing gear. They determined that each eruption is associated with a hot spot measuring just a few dozen feet across — too small to be generated by fracture walls rubbing together.

"Once we had these results in hand, we knew right away heat was not causing the geysers, but vice versa," lead author Carolyn Porco, leader of the Cassini imaging team from the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colorado, said in a statement. "It also told us the geysers are not a near-surface phenomenon, but have much deeper roots."

Those roots reach the moon's subsurface sea via unfrozen conduits in Enceladus' ice shell, the team concluded.

In a second study, astronomers found that Enceladus' overall geyser-generated plume varies in brightness as the moon makes its way around Saturn. The exact cause of the brightness variation remains a mystery, however.

Both new studies appear in the latest issue of the Astronomical Journal.

The $3.2 billion Cassini mission — a joint effort of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency — launch in 1997 and arrived in orbit around Saturn in 2004. The spacecraft is scheduled to keep studying the ringed planet and its many moons until September 2017, when it will perform an intentional death dive into the gas giant's atmosphere.

Watch This, And You May Never Look At Cheeseburgers The Same Way Again

Warning: This may destroy cheeseburgers for you forever.

Hydrochloric acid is a strong compound that has many industrial uses, from removing rust from steel to processing leather. It's also found in your stomach.

In fact, a stomach-churning episode from The University of Nottingham's Periodic Table of Videos YouTube series reveals what happens when you dump a still-warm McDonald's cheeseburger in a vat of hydrochloric acid. Just watch the video above.

"As you're watching me, churning away in your stomach is acid which is one of the first stages in which food is broken down into usable components to give you energy or to make you fat," our favorite Einstein-look-a-like Martyn Poliakoff, a chemist at the university, says in the video.

As you'll see, after three and a half hours, that acid makes a burger look... to put it lightly, the opposite of appetizing.

Flight Attendant Warns Travelers To Flush Their Drugs Before Landing

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — An Australian airline apologized on Wednesday for a warning a flight attendant gave passengers who might have been flying high that there were drug-sniffer dogs awaiting them at Sydney airport.

Many of the 210 passengers aboard the Jetstar flight from Gold Coast city on Sunday night had attended the Splendour in the Grass weekend music festival at Byron Bay and were returning home.

"We have been told there are sniffer dogs and quarantine officers waiting in the domestic terminal," Sydney's The Daily Telegraph newspaper on Wednesday quoted the attendant as telling passengers via the Airbus A320's public address system.

"If you need to dispose of anything you shouldn't have, we suggest you flush it now," he added.

The newspaper said the warning prompted passengers to rush for the toilets.

Jetstar spokesman Stephen Moynihan confirmed the newspaper report was accurate. He said the public response to the announcement had been "mixed."

The airline said it routinely makes quarantine announcements on such flights that cross state borders.

"The crew member's words were poorly chosen and are plainly at odds with the professional standards we'd expect from our team," Jetstar said in a statement. "We apologize to customers offended by the comments."

Jetstar said it was "addressing the matter with the cabin crew member involved," but did not detail any potential disciplinary action.

One passenger told the newspaper several passengers suddenly made for the toilets with "things clenched in their hands."

"Why would you tip people off about this?" the passenger, who was not named, asked." If they have got something illegal, let them get caught."

But the response on Jetstar's Facebook page was largely positive.

"What a good Samaritan, Jetstar Australia this guy deserves a promotion," Rohit Dwivedi posted.

"Of course you should warn your passengers to help avoid them being humiliated, locked in a cage or fined," Jebediah Cole posted.

Australian Federal Police declined on Wednesday to comment.

Obama Won't Legalize Pot Just Because The New York Times Told Him

The White House has responded to New York Times editorials this week supporting marijuana legalization, saying ending U.S. pot prohibition isn't the "silver bullet solution."

The Office of National Drug Control Policy staff, while acknowledging the criminal justice system needs reform, argues in a blog post published Monday night that a series of Times editorials that began Sunday "ignores the science" and "fails to address public health problems" associated with a possible increase in marijuana use.

"The New York Times editorial team failed to mention a cascade of public health problems associated with the increased availability of marijuana," the blog post reads. "While law enforcement will always play an important role in combating violent crime associated with the drug trade, the Obama Administration approaches substance use as a public health issue, not merely a criminal justice problem.

"Any discussion on the issue should be guided by science and evidence, not ideology and wishful thinking," the blog post continues. "We will continue to focus on genuine drug policy reform -– a strategy that rejects extremes, and promotes expanded access to treatment, evidence-based prevention efforts, and alternatives to incarceration"

The Office of National Drug Control Policy, citing scientific studies, argues that marijuana is addictive, impairs development of brain structures, hurts academic performance in school-aged children and poses the threat of drugged driving on roadways.

The blog post also argues that legalizing weed would neither eliminate the black market for marijuana, nor guarantee that states will reap substantial revenue from retail marijuana sales.

"The White House should be commended for standing with the science -- not political ideology," Kevin Sabet, co-founder of anti-legalization group Smart Approaches to Marijuana, told The Huffington Post. "But we shouldn't be very surprised. The White House has repeatedly said they stand with the science on this issue. And the science says that marijuana can be addictive for one in six teens, it doubles the risk of a car crash, and it significantly increases the risk for losing IQ points and is connected to mental illness."

The New York Times editorial board argued that, after weighing legalization, the scale tips in favor of ending the ban. The Times acknowledges concerns about certain forms of marijuana use, including that by minors, and advocates restricting sales to those under age 21.

"There are no perfect answers ... but neither are there such answers about tobacco or alcohol," the Times writes. The newspaper says the concerns are outweighed by the "vast" social costs of marijuana laws.

Mason Tvert, communications director for marijuana policy reform group Marijuana Policy Project, fired back, saying President Barack Obama still has "some 'evolving' to do when it comes to marijuana policy."

"The White House is clutching at straws to make its case that marijuana should remain illegal, and the hypocrisy is as glaring as ever," Tvert said. "President Obama has acknowledged that marijuana is less harmful than alcohol to the consumer, yet his administration somehow maintains the position that marijuana is just too dangerous to allow responsible adult use. ... Nobody thinks ending alcohol prohibition was a bad idea, and it should come as little surprise that most Americans think it would be wise to do the same with marijuana prohibition."

To date, Colorado and Washington have legalized recreational marijuana for adults. Twenty-three states have legalized marijuana for medical purposes, and about a dozen more states are considering legalization in some form. Still, federal law considers all uses of marijuana illegal, classifying it alongside heroin and LSD as one of the "most dangerous" drugs. Woman Who Crawled Naked Through Doggy Door Tells Her Side Of Story

Remember the woman who broke into a stranger's house through the doggy door and when she was found sitting naked in the bathtub said that she was looking for a phone to use? Well, she's back and here to talk about what preceded her famous arrest as well as the fallout from becoming a Weird News celebrity.

First, the recap: Sara Elizabeth Soto, 25, was arrested in Weatherford, Texas on April 22, 2013. A homeowner said that he found his doggy door damaged after 1 a.m. and that Soto was sitting unclothed in his tub, according to TV station KDFW. An officer found Soto's black dress on the resident's porch and allowed her to put it back on before booking her on trespassing and criminal mischief, according to the Weatherford Democrat.

But that's only a fraction of her wild night. Soto, a self-professed pothead who raps under the name Sara Toke-A-Lot, spoke at length to MTV News' Marty Beckerman (himself the focus of a Weird News article)

Soto likes to rap and smoke weed

“She actually sent a message out of the blue. And we wondered, what is her life like now? Does she still get recognized? Can she find a job with thousands of Google results?," Beckerman told The Huffington Post by email. "We asked if she wanted to share her side of the story, and could have never anticipated how different it would be to what was originally reported a year ago.”

Here are the highlights from MTV's interview:

  • Even if she hadn't been hauled to jail, Soto never would have forgotten that night, because she'd just been informed that she was adopted.

  • Reeling from the revelation about her birth, she went out for a drive and crashed her Nissan into a ditch 60 miles from home. MTV confirmed with Weatherford Police that she crashed her car that night.

  • Soto claims that police refused to let her call for a ride home and so she went out penniless into the wee hours of the night in search of a phone. A Weatherford official said it would punish anyone on the force if Soto's allegation were true.

  • She knocked on several doors to ask for help, but no one answered. So this is where Soto decided to disrobe and break in. (By the way, Soto is adamant that she didn't wiggle through the pet entrance like an animal; she just reached through the door.)

  • Taking off her clothes made perfect sense to Soto, because her nudity would convince whomever she might encounter that she wasn't carrying a weapon and that, in fact, she was in need of help.

  • Soto wound up in the tub, because she heard someone in the house and wanted to hide.

There's lots more to Soto's tale, such as her complaint that no one returned her panties. To get the full report, check out the MTV News article.

ABC 7 Pranked Over UCLA Water Main Break As Caller Claims 'Someone Took A Very Large Dump'

Maybe the name should've been a giveaway.

A man who called ABC 7 in Los Angeles ostensibly to explain Tuesday's water main break near the UCLA campus claimed to be Department of Public Works spokesman Louis Slungpue -- pronounced "slung-poo," as he helpfully corrected one of the anchors live on the air.

Slungpue first told the news outlet that the break was caused by college students flushing a cherry bomb down the toilet.

"Wow! Can you say that again?" the male anchor said. "You think somebody sent a cherry bomb down the toilet?"

Slungpue went on with his explanation, saying the DPW is "still in the investigation phase," and added that, "it was either a cherry bomb or someone took a really large dump, y'know?"

"That is incredible," the female anchor said. "Are you 100 percent sure about that?"

The line goes dead and in the background someone can be heard saying, "It's a prank call."

"Oh, we lost him," the anchor said on the air. "I'm sorry about that."

Man Lied About Penis Amputation During Circumcision: Doctors' Lawyer

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — An attorney for two Alabama doctors accused in a lawsuit of amputating a man's penis in what was supposed to have been a routine circumcision filed a motion Tuesday seeking to dismiss the claims.

Attorney Mike Florie says his clients, Dr. Michael Bivins and Dr. Alan Aikens, never performed a circumcision on Johnny Lee Banks Jr. that involved the removal of tissue or the amputation of the man's penis. He said the suit's claims are false. Banks' attorney, John Graves, filed the lawsuit on July 22, accusing the doctors and their medical groups of malpractice, negligence and other wrongdoing. It seeks an unspecified amount of money.

Graves says he stands firmly by the allegations but would not comment on specifics of the case.

"I don't file frivolous lawsuits," he said. Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/07/29/johnny-lee-banks-penis-amputation-lawsuit_n_5632278.html?utm_hp_ref=weird-news&ir=Weird+News

Dad Accidentally Delivers Newborn Into Toilet After Wife Goes Into Labor At Home

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -- A Connecticut baby has arrived with a splash, right into a toilet bowl.

The baby's father, David Davis, tells WVIT-TV ( http://bit.ly/1mZ4HlM ) that he was forced to deliver the newborn in the bathroom of his West Haven home Friday morning after his wife, Lillie, went into labor.

He says the baby slipped through his hands during the delivery, but luckily went into the water. He says she began crying and it was the best sound he'd ever heard.

Davis says the couple had gone to a hospital earlier in that morning, but had been sent home after it was determined his wife was not ready to give birth.

She began feeling strong labor pains a few hours later. Livia weighed in at 7 pounds, 6 ounces - soaking wet.

HOLYOKE, Mass. (AP) — Sea monsters may exist only in the imagination, but a Massachusetts couple wants to make them part of their names.

The Republican newspaper of Springfield reports (http://bit.ly/1kkYaao ) that the couple, Melanie Ann Convery and Neal James Coughlin of Holyoke, are petitioning Massachusetts to allow them to make both of their middle names "Seamonster."

The couple has made the request in a legal notice published in a local newspaper as required by state law. A hearing on the request is scheduled for Wednesday in Hampden Probate and Family Court.

The couple gave no indication why they wanted the legendary creatures to be included in their names. Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/07/29/middle-name-seamonster_n_5631387.html?utm_hp_ref=weird-news&ir=Weird+News
