Reasoning with a bear ... can be a bear. In a viral video posted Tuesday, YouTube user Mary Maley wrote that she was on a solo kayak trip in Berg Bay, Alaska, when a curious bear approached her unoccupied kayak at lunchtime.
The rest is wildnerness theater.
At first Maley thanks the bear for leaving the kayak alone. Then she threatens it with pepper spray (and makes good on the threat.) But the bear begins gnawing and pummeling the kayak. "Stop breaking my kayak please," Maley says. Later, after a moment of resignation, Maley comes up with the best lines of all: "It's the end of September. Why are you here? You're supposed to be asleep."
The whole exchange seems so "Northern Exposure," doesn't it?
Incidentally, Maley said she was taken to another place to have her kayak repaired. We've reached out to her to see how things are going, and we'll let you know if we hear back.
