Experts Review 8 Weird Ways To Prevent Snoring

Is snoring keeping you up at night or driving your partner crazy? You’re not alone. Data from a longitudinal study published in 1993 found that about 44 percent of men and 28 percent of women snore habitually, so this problem is happening in bedrooms across the nation.

Snoring happens when the upper airway muscles relax and constrict air flow through the throat, forcing air through a small space and causing a vibration — think of the way a kazoo or saxophone makes noise. This sound can be annoying for others — and can also wake you up at night, leaving you feel sleepy and foggy-headed the next day. That’s why many people who suffer from snoring look to unusual remedies to make it stop.

One of those alternative treatments? Learning to play the didgeridoo, an instrument traditionally played by indigenous Australians. Because the wind instrument requires the player to practice “circular breathing” — breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth at the same time — it can strengthen the throat muscles and help prevent the upper airway muscles from relaxing too much at night, thereby reducing snoring. A 2006 study has even shown didgeridoo playing to have a positive impact on those who snore, reducing their daytime sleepiness and helping to prevent fewer nighttime disruptions to partners.

But there are many alternative options to prevent snoring — some doctor recommended, others highly questionable. If you’re curious about alternative treatments, we investigated some of the most unusual remedies that get passed around and tested nightly in bedrooms, and asked experts which ones work — and which ones definitely don’t.

It’s important to note that while in many cases snoring may be the result of allergies, a cold, excessive alcohol consumption or weight, it can also be a symptom of a more serious condition known as obstructive sleep apnea. This is characterized by sudden stops in breathing during sleep that can be very dangerous. So if you’re snoring consistently, you should get checked out. A proper diagnosis and personalized treatment will help to ensure you get a full, restful night’s sleep.

1. Sew a tennis ball to the back of a T-shirt

What the experts say: Doctor-approved

Research has consistently confirmed that sleeping on your back is likely to increase snoring, since it allows your tongue to relax and slide into the back of your throat, obstructing air flow. By sewing or duct taping a tennis ball to the back of a T-shirt and wearing it to bed, you force yourself to sleep on your side, since rolling onto your back would be extremely uncomfortable.

Dr. Robert Oexman, director of the Sleep to Live Institute, recommends trying the tennis ball trick for at least two weeks — enough time to retrain yourself to sleep on your side.

2. Smart Nora

What the experts say: Proceed with caution

When placed next to your bed, this egg-shaped smart device will detect the sounds of snoring and gently move your head during sleep using an inflatable, wirelessly connected pillow insert, allowing you to breathe easily without waking you entirely.

Sounds great, but does it work? Experts are mixed on this product, with Dr. James MacFarlane, a sleep specialist and assistant professor at the University of Toronto, recommending it as a non-invasive snoring solution. While New York-based dentist Dr. Edward Alvarez suggests that the repeated “microarousals” caused by moving the head around may reduce sleep quality and leave the user feeling tired the next morning.

3. Ujjayi breathing

What the experts say: Can’t hurt

This form of yogic breathing requires “inhaling slowly and slightly constricting the muscles of the throat, and using that constriction to exhale through the nose, generating a hissing sound,” explains yoga instructor Parinaz Samimi.

This “helps strengthen the throat muscles,” she says, improving nighttime air flow much like the didgeridoo. It’s harmless, so even if it doesn’t stop your snoring, it may help you to relax more during the day.

4. Compression socks

What the experts say: Proceed with caution

You know the tight socks you sometimes wear on long flights to prevent blood clots? Research from the University of Toronto in 2015 found that a small group of sleep apnea patients who wore compression socks to bed noted a 27 percent decrease disruptions in breathing when they wore the socks to bed over a two-week period. The research did not note a reduction in daytime sleepiness, however.

5. Tongue suction cup

What the experts say: Can’t hurt

Known more scientifically as a “tongue advancement device,” this gadget sticks to the tongue and pulls it toward the front of your mouth during sleep, bringing forward the muscles that may be obstructing your airway, according to Dr. Alvarez. “There is a possibility that this may work,” he says. “But it can be uncomfortable to use, and I don’t want to end up with a hickey on my tongue.”

6. Neti pot

What the experts say: Doctor-approved, but with a caveat

The neti pot, a teapot-like device used to pour a saline solution through the nasal passageway is another alternative. One thing to note about the Neti pot: Though it’s effective and relatively easy to use, it must be cleaned thoroughly with sterile, distilled, or boiled water that has been cooled to room temperature after every use. You can store previously boiled water in a sterile, closed container for up to 24 hours, according to the FDA. If not properly cleaned, a Neti pot can breed bacteria that can lead to infections, including the deadly “brain-eating amoeba.” With proper cleaning, though — never use unboiled tap water — nightly use is generally safe.

7. Electric shock

What the experts say: Skip it

No, we’re not talking about old-school electric shock therapy. There are modern-day devices — like the Hivox Stop Snoring Device — that are designed to send a gentle electric shock to the user if snoring is detected, which either negatively reinforces the behavior or stimulates the neck muscles and forces you to maintain muscle tone. Sound far-fetched? You’re right on the money.

“I feel like these should be in the back of comic books,” says Dr. Alvarez. “Please save your money.”

8. Learn a wind instrument

What the experts say: Doctor-approved

We mentioned above that playing the didgeridoo is one alternative, research-backed way to reduce or stop snoring, but learning to play other wind and brass instruments — such as the trumpet or trombone — has also been shown to reduce the likelihood of developing sleep apnea. Certain singing exercises have also been shown to strengthen the throat muscles and reduce nighttime snoring.

Scientists Just Found Out Narwhals Hunt And Stab Fish With Their Giant Tusks

Canadian scientists have made a new discovery about narwhals and their crazy awesome eating habits.

If you’re unfamiliar, narwhals, also known as “unicorns of the sea” (no, we’re not kidding), are whales that live in Arctic waters and have one massive defining characteristic: they have giant tusks.

Or, rather, the males do. They look like this:

But researchers from Fisheries and Oceans Canada have discovered male narwhals will herd arctic cod, get super close and then “hard tap” them with their tusks to stun them. The narwhals then suck their prey into their mouths and have themselves a meal.

SAVAGE, RIGHT?!

The narwhal’s tusk has long been a mystery to scientists. There have been hypotheses that the porous horn acts like a sensor.

“Having all those nerves on the outside allows the whale to detect water pressure, temperature and salinity. It might even be able to detect barometric pressure when it’s above the water’s surface. However, if the tusk is so important to survival, why don’t females have one? We don’t know,” says How Stuff Works.

There have also been guesses that the tusk is used to duel and establish dominance or that it has to do with mating.

However, none of those theories have actually been observed by scientists, which is why the above video depicting the narwhals using the tusks for food is so intriguing.

Knowing how the tusks are used by the animals will also help scientists figure out how to better protect them from extinction.

Nature is so cool. Long live narwhals.

115-Pound Teen Catches A 835-Pound Tuna -- And That's No Fish Tale

You hug that catch, kid.

Kaleb Richardson, a 14-year-old who weighs 115 pounds, reeled in an 835-pound bluefin tuna off Grand Isle, Louisiana, the Pensacola News Journal reported Thursday.

Richardson had help to haul the big one aboard the “Whoo Dat” last month ― but give the kids props for manning the fighting chair to land the fish in just 45 minutes. The bluefin measured a massive 86 inches in girth, the paper said.

The humongous tuna is expected to rank among the five biggest bluefins ever caught off Louisiana, according to Marlin Magazine.

The News Journal noted that Richardson got in some solid practice fishing in Nova Scotia over the winter.

Practice makes perfect, kid.

“(Kaleb) is maybe 115 pounds, and I’ll put him up against any adult angler,” his father, Keith Richardson, told the Acadiana Advocate.

Katy Perry Is Breaded And Boiled In 'Bon Appetit' Music Video

Just when you thought you had your fill of innuendo-heavy, food-related pop songs, Katy Perry’s “Bon Appetit” arrived on the scene to make you feel confused, hungry (in a confused way) and wondering how much she actually knows about the Michelin star system.

On Friday, Perry released a very literal visual interpretation of her single. In her new music video, the pop star is first lifted out of plastic wrap by a team of chefs. They then proceed to rub flour on her very elastic limbs, cover her in carrots and onions, boil her, and do some other stuff. Migos arrives, Perry is laid out on a platter for some very fancy cannibals to consume, and then a pole emerges from the center of the dinner table.

At the end of it all, Perry is left alone, knife and fork in hand, in front of a pie made of human body parts.

We feel ... things, but we don’t have the words for them just yet.

Watch the video above.

'Warm Neptune' Exoplanet Atmosphere Consists Of Hydrogen, Helium, Water Vapor

Scientists are studying water vapor in the atmosphere of an exoplanet discovered in 2011, dubbed HAT-P-26b. NASA reports that combined observations from the Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes reveal this planet ― more than 430 light-years from Earth ― has an atmosphere of hydrogen and helium.

Orbiting a sun that’s twice as old as our own, HAT-P-26b is approximately the same size as one of our solar system’s outer planets, Neptune, which also has a hydrogen-helium atmosphere. HAT-P-26b is considered a “Warm Neptune” because it orbits its sun more closely than our own Neptune does.

According to NASA, “HAT-P-26b’s atmosphere is relatively clear of clouds and has a strong water signature, although the planet is not a water world. This is the best measurement of water to date on an exoplanet of this size.”

At the University of Exeter in the U.K., astrophysics professor David Sing is a co-leader of the HAT-P-26b research team, and co-author of a study published May 11 in the journal Science.

“This ‘Warm Neptune’ is a much smaller planet than those we have been able to characterize in depth, so this new discovery about its atmosphere feels like a big breakthrough in our pursuit to learn more about how solar systems are formed, and how it compares to our own,” Sing explained in a University of Exeter statement.

The following video demonstrates how astronomers discover exoplanets using the transit method.

HAT-P-26b study leader Hannah Wakeford, of the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, said the research is important because it changes how scientists think about the birth and evolution of planetary systems.

“Astronomers have just begun to investigate the atmospheres of these distant Neptune-mass planets, and almost right away, we found an example that goes against the trend in our solar system,” Wakeford said in a NASA statement.

“This kind of unexpected result is why I really love exploring the atmospheres of alien planets.”

Did The German Embassy Just Subtweet America?

It’s been one helluva ride lately for American politics.

In the past week alone, President Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, who was investigating whether Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia during the election, causing a maelstrom of anger and confusion from both sides of the political aisle. Not to mention, the Trump administration’s explanation for Comey’s highly unusual dismissal unravelled fairly quickly.

So, when the German embassy in Washington offered a bit of interestingly timed insight on Friday, a lot of people believed it was subtweeting America and throwing some major shade.

“Ever experienced pleasure from someone’s misfortune?” the embassy tweeted Friday afternoon. “There’s a #German word for that: Schadenfreude!”

The embassy’s tweet included a link to its official website, with a blog post that contains a more detailed definition of schadenfreude.

“Do you wish the best for everyone ― even your enemies? Or do you gain pleasure from watching someone fail?” the article, penned by German embassy writer Nicole Glass, reads.

“Most of you would probably never admit to feeling Schadenfreude,” Glass continues. “But be honest: do feelings of Schadenfreude creep up on you when they’re related to someone who wronged you in the past?”

To be fair, the embassy’s schadenfreude reference could be completely innocuous. Nowhere in the tweet does the embassy mention Trump or Comey, nor does it make any political reference. The tweet appears to be part of the embassy’s weekly social media campaign #WordOfTheWeek, which shares German words and their definitions.

For example, last week’s German word of the day was much friendlier: zweisamkeit, defined as “a very intimate, harmonious togetherness without anyone else being in the picture.”

Still, some people assumed Friday’s tweet was the German embassy’s attempt at trolling the Trump administration. With all the crazy news lately, it’s hard to blame them.

Bill Maher Rips Donald Trump For Turning Presidency Into A Reality TV Show

Bill Maher pulled no punches when it came to picking apart the week’s political news on Friday.

The “Real Time” host tore into Donald Trump over the way he fired FBI Director James Comey, before accusing the president of turning the office into a reality TV show.

“The acting Attorney General? Fired. National Security Adviser? You’re fired. FBI Director? You’re fired,” said Maher. “Welcome to ‘Apprentice, Nuclear Edition.’”

Bill Maher Blasts Social Media Tycoons For Creating Such Addictive Products

Bill Maher says social media tycoons should “stop pretending that they are friendly nerd Gods building a better world.”

Instead, the “Real Time” host has called on them to admit they are “just tobacco farmers in T-shirts, selling an addictive product to children.”

“Let’s face it, checking your ‘likes’ is the new smoking,” he said Friday.

Maher referenced a recent CBS “60 Minutes” report on the concept of brain-hacking. It alleged that tech companies purposefully design addictive products which force people to constantly feel the need to “check in.”

“Every time you check your phone, you are pulling that slot machine handle because you may get that reward,” Maher said. “It’s come to this? You don’t exist until you get a smiley face?”

Adam Schiff: Donald Trump Is Dimming Beacon Of Hope For Rest Of World

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) says President Donald Trump is having a negative effect worldwide.

On Friday’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee claimed Trump is “dimming the beacon of hope for the rest of the world.”

People who’d suffered injustice at the hands of authoritarian regimes often “look to the United States to speak for them,” Schiff said. But after Politico referenced German chancellor Angela Merkel as now being the “leader of the free world,” he feared it may soon no longer be the case ― adding it would be “a grave tragedy” if America lost that leadership.

Schiff also criticized Trump for insinuating via Twitter that he’d taped his meetings with fired FBI Director James Comey.

“The president should immediately provide any such recordings to Congress or admit, once again, to have made a deliberately misleading and in this case threatening statement,” he said.

Check out the full interview above.

Stephen Colbert Explains Why Trump's Firing Of Comey Isn't Really Like 'The Godfather'

President Donald Trump’s firing of FBI director James Comey has been likened to a classic scene from “The Godfather.”

Following Comey’s dismissal on Tuesday, one senior intelligence official told NBC News that the “thuggish” and “humiliating” way in which his termination was carried out was like a “horse head in the bed.”

It was “designed to send a message,” the official added.

But on Friday’s “Late Show,” host Stephen Colbert explained why the comparison wasn’t actually that accurate ― and it’s all to do with one of Godfather Don Corleone’s favorite personality traits: respect.

Find out the reason in the clip above.

The Office Of Government Ethics May Have Just Trolled Donald Trump

Did the Office of Government Ethics just throw shade at President Donald Trump on Twitter? It sure seems that way.

Trump fired FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday. On Thursday, it was reported Comey refused Trump’s demand for loyalty at a private dinner in January, something the White House denied.

And on Friday, the ethics office tweeted the following message:

The post did not reference Trump directly, but many tweeters took it to be a subtle dig at the president:

Man Stuffs Cash Into Shirt Of GOP Congressman Who Voted To Repeal Obamacare

Emotions ran high at a town hall that Rep. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) hosted in North Dakota.

Police removed two men from the event in Mandan on Thursday afternoon after a question-and-answer session turned rowdy, according to multiple reports.

The “Coffee with Cramer” meeting ended up focusing principally on health care reform, with Cramer’s vote in favor of legislation that repeals and replaces major parts of the Affordable Care Act a particular topic of contention.

Video going viral shows how one man approached Cramer to ask him a question, but was grabbed around the throat by another. Police escorted the throat-grabber away.

The first man then asked Cramer if the rich would benefit from a tax cut if health care is destroyed. After Cramer responded “of course not,” the man shoved a wad of bills into the congressman’s shirt collar. He was also then ejected.

Neither of the removed men were arrested, however.

Cramer, who in March came under fire for mocking the symbolic white pantsuits that Democratic women wore to President Donald Trump’s first address to Congress, later appeared to play down the incident.

“I don’t have to agree with them, but I still have an obligation to listen to them,” he told local ABC affiliate WDAY-TV 6. “I don’t blame people for their anger or anxiety. If they disagree with me or somebody else, I understand that.”

Cramer later released this statement via Twitter:

Creepy Laughing Clown Doll Scares Bear Out Of Stealing Trash

This black bear won’t be targeting a trash can again in a hurry.

The animal received a fright when it tried raiding the locked receptacle outside a home in Salem, Virginia, on May 2, reports UPI.

As the bear attempted to tip the can over, it activated the laughing mechanism on a creepy clown doll that the can’s owners had strapped to its side.

The clown’s menacing cackle spooked the bear, prompting it to run off. The trash can and its contents were left intact, meaning no clean up duties the following day.

This Talented Therapy Pig Is Bringing Joy And Oinks To Seniors

Her name is Blue, but she makes people who meet her anything but.

The South Florida pot-bellied pig isn’t just a budding fashionista and Instagram star — she’s a certified therapy animal who spends time bringing joy to seniors at an assisted living facility in Palm Beach Gardens.

“The nursing home residents and even the nurses just LOVE her,” Blue’s owner, Jahaira Zamora-Duran, told HuffPost in an email. “All we see are smiles and all we hear is ‘You just made my day!’ Everyone’s eyes light up when we walk in and they just can’t believe it’s a pig.”

For many residents, simply petting and visiting with Blue is therapeutic. She’s also learned a number of tricks, like spinning, sitting, kissing, bowing and even playing “piano.”

“She is very sweet and I began to notice how great she was at reading emotions when she was about 1 year old,” Zamora-Duran said.

She then began to go about getting Blue officially certified, which she said is “somewhat complicated” for a pig. Not all organizations certify pigs, and the process involves online training for the owner and a health screening, and thorough behavior evaluation for the animal.

“It is important for people to understand that not all pigs are qualified to do this, it takes a lot of preparation due to the fact that pigs are prey animals and get startled very easily,” she said.

But with training and preparation, Blue passed the tests, and it’s been rewarding for both pig and people. The potbelly helps residents “get out of their element” and forget about pain or depression they may be experiencing, Nu Vista Living Facility lifestyle director Pamela Collins told WPTV in February.

“It’s amazing how much Blue is drawn to the people at the nursing home, it is as if she just knows that they need her,” Zamora-Duran told HuffPost.

But as wonderful as Blue is, her owner notes that pigs are not the best pets for everyone. She emphasized the importance of properly researching them if you’re interested in owning one.

“It is very important for people to understand that pigs take work and you should not get one just because they are cute,” she said. “Owning a pig is a 15+ year commitment and they will not stay baby size forever. A mini pig is considered anything under 300 pounds, this is mini compared to a 900 pound farm hog.”

When you're posing for a picture and it's on video #BlueThePig

A post shared by Blue The Pig (@bluethepigofficial) on

Zamora-Duran added that pigs are highly intelligent and that if you aren’t able to invest enough time and patience, you may end up with “a destructive and aggressive” animal.

“Most people are not aware of this and this is why sanctuaries are overcrowded with pigs that are surrendered daily,” she said. “Please do not get a pig if you are worried about the size or if you do not have the time for one.”

But for Zamora-Duran, Blue is perfect.

“She loves attention and loves to learn,” she said. “When she is not on duty she is practicing tricks with me, dressing up in adorable outfits and taking pictures for her Instagram friends.”

And in case you were wondering, Blue seems to enjoy those outfits as much as you do.

“Blue loves the camera,” Zamora-Duran said. “She will hold a pose until the flash goes off, and contrary to what people may think she really enjoys dressing up and posing!”

Saturn's Moons Enceladus And Tethys Pose For Incredible Family Photo

The latest image from NASA shows an incredible family photo: Enceladus and Tethys, two of Saturn's moons, lined up so it almost looks like a bullseye in space.

That's Enceladus in the foreground, which is about 313 miles across, and "big brother" Tethys is behind it and is more than double the size, or 660 miles across:

The image, which also shows the rings of Saturn, was captured in September by the narrow-angle camera on the Cassini spacecraft. NASA said it was about 1.3 million miles from Enceladus and 1.6 million miles from Tethys when it snapped the photo.

Cassini, which was launched in 1997, has been studying both Saturn and its many moons since it entered the planet's orbit in 2004. In September, the spacecraft found that Enceladus has a "global ocean" sitting just beneath its icy surface.

Saturn has 62 known moons, including nine that haven't been named yet. NASA says scientists continue to discover new moons orbiting the planet.

Cassini is a cooperative project between NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. You can follow its mission online here.

Gun Safety Instructor Accidentally Shoots Pastor During Class

A California pastor was accidentally shot during a gun safety class earlier this month.

Instructor Phillip Rushing of the Personal Protection Institute in Modesto had just replaced his rubber training gun with a real pistol at the end of class when someone asked about how to handle an attacker with a knife, the Modesto Bee reported.

Tom Smith, a family pastor at The House Modesto who also helps with church security, volunteered to act as the attacker. During the roleplaying scenario, Rushing pulled out his weapon and shot Smith in the waist, above the hip, the paper said.

Smith is recovering after surgery.

"We're just extremely grateful that he's OK, that he's alive, and I know a lot of people are wondering what's happened to him," Pastor Chuck Cutsinger told KCRA, the local NBC station. "The church is praying for him. We're praying for him through this hard time, but it looks really positive that he will be OK."

The church also issued a message of support via Twitter:

Senior Pastor Glen Bertau told Fox40 that the shot missed Smith's vital organs and that the pastor is doing well. However, he is still in the hospital and his recovery is expected to take months.

He said Smith isn't holding any grudges against the man who shot him.

"Nobody holds any animosity to anybody," he told the station. "It was an accident, so no one is angry. No one’s upset."

A parishioner agreed.

"It was just a freak accident, the instructor, whatever they were doing and the gun had went off and I guess shot him in the stomach they said...but he's OK," parishioner Elijah Collins told CBS 13.

Collins told the station that Smith has been through surgery.

"The church is praying for him and the city is praying for him and his family," he was quoted as saying. "He's very missed right now."

Police are investigating, but Rushing has not been charged with a crime, the Modesto Bee said.

200-Year-Old Giant Salamander Found In Chinese Cave: Reports

The Chinese giant salamander, the largest living amphibian in the world, is a remarkable creature. Sometimes called a “living fossil,” the animal belongs to an ancient lineage spanning millions of years.

Due to overhunting and habitat destruction, the enormous amphibian is almost extinct in the wild. The International Union for Conservation of Nature considers the giant salamander critically endangered, and says the species has experienced a more than 80 percent population decline over the last 45 years.

Finding a Chinese giant salamander in the wild is thus a marvelous achievement in and of itself. Finding one that’s more than 200 years old? Well, that may just be a historic event.

According to local media reports, that’s precisely what happened last week when a fisherman in southwest China stumbled upon a giant salamander in a cave. The fisherman is said to have noticed the creature after accidentally stepping on something “soft and slimy,” per Mother Nature Network.

The salamander, which was discovered in the city of Chongqing, measures more than 4.5 feet in length and weighs over 100 pounds, China News Network reports.

Scientists say the salamander may be more than two centuries old. This would make the animal much older than other members of its species, which have an average lifespan of 80 years in the wild or 55 years in captivity. It would also rank among the oldest living animals on Earth.

The salamander has been transferred to a special research facility for study and protection.

Darth Vader Roasting On An Open Fire Is A 'Star Wars' Yule Log

Tired of the same old yule log? Have you memorized every pop, crack and sizzle -- and found the exact moment where it loops?

Then you'll appreciate the newest version of the yule log, especially if you're among the 7 billion or so people planning to see the new "Star Wars" film this weekend: Five hours of Darth Vader roasting from "Return of the Jedi."

"Cuddle up with your loved ones and bask in the warming glow of this five hour Darth Vader yule log," wrote YouTuber BenjaminApple, who posted the video. "Perfect for holiday parties."

While others have previously looped the scene of Vader burning for yule logs (including one with a wintry snow effect), this latest version is by far the longest.

For other yule log options, there's also the Nick Offerman Yule Log, the NSFW Yule Log and of course the original WPIX Yule Log, first shown on local television in New York in 1966.
