What Happens When Parents Go Too Far With Spelling Words Instead of Saying Them

Inevitably at some point in most parents' lives, they take to verbally spelling out certain words they don't want their young children to hear -- whether it's to avoid teaching them curse words, hide a surprise or prevent them from repeating information.

This new video from the hilarious moms of The BreakWomb shows what happens when parents taking that spelling mania overboard...

Proof That Pickup Lines Are Terrible In Any Language

It's comforting or disconcerting, take your pick, that pickup lines around the world are equally lame no matter the langauge.

Cut Video traveled the globe to collect come-ons in a new clip (above) that proves the art of meeting someone with a slick intro is a struggle everywhere.

We've heard versions of most of the lines in the video, like, "Do you believe in love at first sight or should I walk by again?" But a man in New Delhi definitely takes the cake for creativity with this line: "Is your father a terrorist? Because you look bomb."

All corny approaches aside, the next time someone sets your heart aflutter, why not just try saying a simple "hello"?

The Most Bacteria-Loaded Thing In Your Home Is Not What You Think

There are a lot of dirty little things in our homes -- laptops, TV remotes, bathroom drains, even our pillow cases, for crying out loud. And if you think the grossest, by far, is the sponge at your kitchen sink, science would agree with you.

Studies from the University of Arizona and NSF International have shown that a sponge used in the kitchen harbors a "forest" of fecal bacteria, spores and pathogens (thanks to the damp environment and the food you wash off your plate), but even so: it's still not the most bacteria-loaded thing in your home.

That honor belongs to you.

Rob Dunn, a biologist at North Carolina State University, studied the dust in 1,200 homes to decipher their microbial situations.

He told HuffPost that while the kitchen sponge might contain "nearly everything that you find on food, along with fecal, vaginal and skin microbes," the same bacteria are found "with the air you breathe."

And having all that bacteria in our bodies is a fact of life. "Generally speaking," Dunn said, "you are the most bacteria-laden thing in your home. Compared to your skin, your gut, etc. ... the sponge is a desert."

So if you can't fix your own bacteria-laden body, what can you fix? Well, that sponge, for starters. There are things you can do to help prevent your sponge from seeing its worst days -- such as giving it the smell test (and replacing it when it smells bad, about every other week), swapping it for a dishrag and washing that frequently, or upgrading to a synthetic sponge, such as Brillo's Estracell.

"Cellulose sponges are made of an organic compound: paper, from trees. When you introduce water and bacteria to that environment, the bacteria starts to feed on that organic compound," Eric Phillips, the brand manager at Brillo, told The Huffington Post. "That's why you get that mildewy smell on the sponge."

So take comfort in the fact that you can make your sponges a little less gross. But your body? Just be relieved that it's all a part of being human.

You'll Be Shocked To See How Kinky Your State Is: Survey

You've heard of 50 Shades of Grey, but a new survey suggests America is 50 states of kink.

It seems every state has something interesting sexually. For instance, Vermont residents confess to having the most sexual partners, while people in Georgia are the ones most likely to masturbate several times a day.

University President Apologizes For Anti-Gay Comments From 1985

University of Akron President Scott L. Scarborough apologized Wednesday for anti-gay comments he made as a student government president in 1985.

As head of the Students' Association at the University of Texas at Austin, Scarborough protested against a resolution that urged the school's regents to enact a policy barring discrimination against lesbian and gay individuals. In his objection, he suggested gay men contracted AIDS from contact with "fecal matter" and warned that hiring anyone who was gay was a "potential health hazard," according to newly unearthed newspaper articles from the time.

"Like many people, my views have evolved over the last 30 years," Scarborough told The Huffington Post in a statement Wednesday. "We all have learned much since those days and, if I knew then what I know now, I would not have taken the steps that I did or said what I did as a student in the 1980s. I sincerely regret any offense or concern those past actions or statements have caused."

The 30-year-old newspaper clippings from the Daily Texan were published Wednesday by anonymous university activists calling themselves Graduates Over Greed. Additional microfilm clips, located by HuffPost, are reproduced below. Two witnesses from the time corroborated the newspaper accounts.

Casey Dobson, one of the sponsors of the 1985 resolution at Austin, said he brought the legislation forward after a meeting with a group of gay students. "It just seemed a matter of basic fairness to me," Dobson said. He couldn't imagine someone today taking the position Scarborough did back then, he added, saying that he remains "proud" of passing that resolution.

Students and professors at the University of Akron have fumed in recent months over cuts of more than 200 employees, the entire baseball program and plans to raise tuition and fees, in an attempt to close a $60 million deficit. A majority of faculty said in a recent union poll they do not believe Scarborough is leading the university in a positive direction.

Trustees for the university discussed Scarborough's past student government activism prior to hiring him as president in 2014 and said they trust he no longer holds those views, they told the Akron Beacon Journal. Scarborough also told the paper he does not have any bias against gay people.

"During my 30 years of professional life, I have come to understand and believe that our society, and our university, must be inclusive of and safe for everyone," Scarborough said in his statement to HuffPost. "Our university must reflect the diverse composition of the community we serve and offer all capable individuals the means to pursue the American Dream. That statement encompasses everyone, certainly including the LGBTQ community."

Bacon Lovers Met An Adorable Piglet And Lives Were Changed

We all know people who love bacon -- love, love, love the stuff with the passion of a thousand burning suns.

But apparently those suns don't burn so bright after all.

BuzzFeed recently decided to lure bacon lovers into a surprise meeting with a teenie-weenie piglet by promising them bacon. The reactions were caught on camera and from the looks of it, the experience was life-changing for many of the participants.

"Are my beliefs that fragile that one little cute thing in my arm is going to change everything I know?" one guy asked himself in the video before answering with honesty. "Kinda. Yeah."

Watch as the bacon buffs wait at the table, expecting a treat. They describe their devotion to the food.

"Everyone loves bacon. It's like asking people if they love oxygen. " one dude says when asked why he likes the greasy stuff. "Of course they do. You have to."

Their worlds are turned upside-down, however, when they see the teeny lil' guy. There's squealing (from the participants). Voices get higher. People resort to baby talk. One woman even swears off bacon forever.

Not everyone's beliefs are transformed, though. There is that one guy who still thinks the pig is somehow delicious-looking. But it doesn't seem like the other people would agree with that dude.

Ah, one small oink can change everything.

As Gang Violence Sweeps El Salvador, Rumor Has It That Only Gangsters' Girlfriends Can Be Blondes

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) — Word on the street is that only the girlfriends of gang members are allowed to be redheads or blondes. So in this violent place, women are scurrying to salons to give up their blond hair and highlights, to dye it all black — not out of fashion sense, but out of fear.

"They also say you can't wear yellow or red clothing," said Claudia Castellanos, a beautician at an upscale salon. "Can you believe it? They've already attacked a woman on a bus for wearing yellow." There's no evidence the rumors are true. The gangs, sophisticated criminal organizations, even issued a statement to deny the hair-color decree.

But with violence in El Salvador reaching levels rivaling those of the civil war that ended more than two decades ago, few are willing to take risks.

El Salvador has just experienced one of its most violent months since the end of the civil war in 1992, with 635 homicides reported in May for the country of just over 6 million people. June is on track to break that mark, with the latest bloodshed coming Sunday when suspected gang members killed two soldiers guarding a bus terminal in the capital.

Fear is pervasive across San Salvador. As daylight fades, stores close early and streets empty. At night, roadblocks go up to thwart possible grenade attacks on police stations, where officers sleep rather than risk being attacked while riding buses home.

Taxi drivers memorize signals to give gang lookouts who guard neighborhoods, flashing codes with their high beams and rolling down their windows to make themselves visible.

Castellanos counts the number of women who've come to her salon recently seeking to color their hair dark: One, two, three, four ...

"You don't wait for clarifications," said Maria Jose Estrada, a former blonde who lives on the outskirts of San Salvador. "These people are crazy and they will kill you."

Police officials and others blame the worsening insecurity on the breakdown of a truce made between the gangs and the government in 2013. While the homicide rate plunged, critics say the truce gave the gangs time to strengthen, train and acquire heavier arms than they had in the past.

Jailed gang leaders were moved from maximum-security prisons to more lax facilities where they were able to run their criminal operations remotely.

But in January, the 6-month-old government of President Salvador Sanchez Ceren publicly rejected any truce and launched an aggressive crackdown, putting gang leaders back in maximum-security cells. The change has meant the streets now are controlled by younger, better-armed criminals who are willing to be reckless.

"You take away the mature leadership, and you get a structure that is made up of younger, fanatical people who want to make a name for themselves," said Raul Mijango, a former guerrilla and a facilitator of the truce. "They want war."

The police say they are ready for battle.

"Things have to get worse before they get better," said a police official, who agreed to comment only if not quoted by name for fear of reprisals. "When I see one (gang member) on the street, I'm going to shoot him before he shoots me."

Police say the crackdown on gang strongholds in the cities has caused members to flee to surrounding rural areas, bringing violence with them.

On a warm, muggy May night in Olocuitla, a town about 20 miles (30 kilometers) south of San Salvador, the bodies of two teens were found in a steep gully after a shootout with police near an old cattle stable, which gang members had turned into a shooting range. One of the dead was the leader of the cell, a 16-year-old who had a grenade in his hand.

Such evidence of crime's spread has rural residents taking new precautions.

Carlos Treminio, a street vendor who lives on the north edge of the capital, now accompanies his teenage son and daughter on their walk to school rather than leave them vulnerable to gang recruiters.

"These jerks lurk around the schools and offer everything to join the gang. If you refuse, they kill you," Treminio said. "I will do everything to protect my children."

Howard Cotto, assistant national police chief and a former guerrilla commander, said the gangs will not find the sort of rural support enjoyed by rebels in the 1980s because they have no ideology.

"They are much more vulnerable," he said.

But, he believes, nothing will change unless the country addresses problems of poverty and a lack of opportunity for young people. The government has arrested 12,000 gang members in the last year with little to show for it, he said.

"We can go in and arrest 50 gang members and 50 more will take their places," Cotto said. "With just arrests, we won't accomplish anything."

Mijango, who helped negotiate the last truce, sees negotiation as the path to avoid the sort of bloodshed the country saw when his Farabundo Marti National Liberation was fighting conservative governments in the 1980s.

Now the former rebel movement is the governing party and it is the gangs who control territories where 90 percent of El Salvador's people live, noted Miguel Fortin Magana, the chief forensics officer for the country's Supreme Court.

"This is like a virus that has spread throughout the country," he said.

KFC 'Fried Rat' Is In Fact Chicken, Lab Test Confirms

It doesn't look appetizing, but it's definitely chicken.

Last week, KFC was forced to confront a customer's accusations that he'd been served a fried rat in a three-piece meal at a Los Angeles store. An independent lab test confirmed that the breaded lump is in fact chicken, KFC spokesman Rodrigo Coronel said in an email to The Huffington Post on Monday.

Devorise Dixon, 25, posted a photo of a nasty-looking entree to Facebook after he bit into it and something didn't seem right. He said the piece of food had a rubbery texture, and that a store manager told him it was a rat.

WENT BACK TO KFC YESTERDAY AND SPOKE TO THE MANAGER SHE SAID IT IS A RAT AND APOLOGIZED, IT'S TIME FOR A LAWYER!!! BESAFE DON'T EAT FAST FOOD !!!

Posted by Devorise Dixon on Friday, June 12, 2015

KFC was quick to counter Dixon's claims. The company said he hadn't responded to requests to have the meal tested by a lab and wasn't cooperating with an investigation. KFC also said that a photo from Dixon's Instagram feed, which shows the morsel from a different angle, made it clear that the food was chicken (not rodent).

KFC now says it's got the science to back up its counterclaim. Coronel said that Dixon's attorney obtained the specimen and turned it over for testing at an independent lab. Those tests confirmed that the chicken tender was made of chicken.

Coronel also alleged that Dixon lied about being told the piece of chicken was a rat.

"We did an internal investigation and talked to all employees. That statement is false," Coronel wrote. "The right thing for this customer to do is to apologize and cease making false claims about the KFC brand."

Coronel said the company is "reviewing all options" when it comes to any potential legal action against Dixon.
