Snowflakes Come In 35 Different Shapes, Scientists Say

Each snowflake may not be so unique after all.

While no one snowflake is exactly the same as another on a molecular level, it turns out that all snowflakes fall into one of 35 different shapes, researchers say. Just take a look at this infographic of the different snowflake shapes from chemistry teacher Andy Brunnin, who authors the blog Compound Interest:

(Story continues below infographic.)

snowflakes 35 different shapes

The graphic uses data from the global classification of snow crystals, ice crystals, and solid precipitation published in the journal Atmospheric Research in 2013.

How exactly do snowflakes form their amazing shapes?

A snowflake starts as a tiny grain of dust or pollen floating in a cloud. Water vapor from the air sticks to the grain and freezes, forming into a tiny hexagonal crystal. From there, more vapor condenses on the crystal as it travels to the ground, and the snowflake's "arms" take shape.

"We still don’t know the precise variables behind the formation of particular shapes," Brunnin wrote on his blog, "although researchers are continually working on theoretical equations to predict snowflake shapes."

Smithsonian reported that, though snowflakes are stunning to observe, scientists classify snowflakes and analyze how they form to better understand how crystals may be used in a host of applications, from silicon to semiconductors in computers and electronics.

So, there's even more reason for the sky to, "Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!"

Jewish Atheist's Controversial T-Shirt: "I Met God, She's Black"

What does God look like?

Renaissance artists painted God into their own cultures, often giving him the white skin and flowing golden hair of a European aristocrat.

But that traditional image has been challenged by many over the centuries. This age-old question is now picking up steam on Facebook, particularly in the light of the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

Dylan Chenfeld, a self-described Jewish atheist, is throwing his ideas into the mix.

“I Met God, She’s Black,” Chenfield says in posters that he's allegedly pasted all over Manhattan during the past few days.

The 21-year-old doesn’t claim to have invented the phrase, saying the trope has existed for quite some time. He's just the one who decided to put it on a $30 T-shirt.

dylan

In fact, William P. Young, author of The Shack, pictured God as an African American woman named Elouisa. Black feminist Ntozake Shange, in her poem "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow is Enough," says, “I found God in myself, and I loved her fiercely.”

But what does an Upper West side-raised Jewish guy have to do with all of this?

The slogan has certainly become a source of business for Chenfield. When he initially started printing the shirts about one year ago, he says many of his buyers were white. He’s also gotten celebrities like Drake and Cara Delevingne to be photographed wearing his shirt.

“I like poking fun at sacred cows,” Chenfield told HuffPost. “I’m taking the idea that God is a white male and doing the opposite of that, which is a black woman.”

Although he’s trying to make money from the campaign, there also seems to be a spiritual side to his motives. Chenfield said that, compared to the other members of his Jewish family, he was always the one asking more questions about what God is really like. His grandparents are Orthodox Jews, he says, who follow a conservative strain of Judaism that doesn’t allow women to have a bat mitzvah.

“Sometimes when you get really religious, it becomes sexist and that’s when I tap out,” Chenfield says. “And that’s why I’ve never been a super religious person.”

He says he stepped away from Judaism and all organized religion after his 13th birthday. He’s hoping his shirt will help people question the image of God as a white male.

met god

But he wasn’t expecting his products to become swept up into the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

The shirt’s message actually speaks to a deep desire for people to see God in their own image, says The Rev. Dr. Jacqueline J. Lewis, a Senior Minister at Middle Collegiate Church who has been involved in protests against Eric Garner’s death at the hands of the NYPD.

In the Abrahamic traditions, God introduced God’s self to Moses by saying, “I am who I am.” God is too mysterious to truly know, so we make God accessible to ourselves by conjuring, imagining, speculating, and guessing. . . How we image God helps us to image ourselves. There is power in thinking of God as a little like us, just as there is power in thinking of ourselves as a little like God. It does not change the fact that God is mystery, it just makes God more accessible. Though God has no race or gender, Jesus had both. Claiming the Afro-Semitic ethnicity of Jesus the Christ has been powerful for me as a Black woman, a wife, a daughter and a clergy.

After protests in support of #BlackLivesMatter erupted across the country, Chenfield says that he's gotten an increased interest in the shirts, seen through interactions online, but that this hasn't necessarily translated into increased sales.

Even if it's a Jewish atheist behind the business, Lewis says that doesn't dismantle the good outcome.

"It's important for people to keep the contemporary conversation going about who God is, what God wants and how we relate to God," Lewis told HuffPost. "The good outcome is if some black child somewhere bumps into it and goes, 'Well maybe. . . maybe God's not an old white guy and if so, what does that say about me?'"

'District 9' Director Neill Blomkamp Reveals Concept Art From Secret 'Alien' Project

"District 9" and "Elysium" director Neill Blomkamp took to Instagram on Thursday to release concept art from a secret "Alien" project which would have reunited Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley and Michael Biehn’s Hicks. Unfortunately, the caption on his first post in the series seems to indicate Blomkamp is no longer pursuing the film. "Was working on this. Don't think I am anymore. Love it though," he wrote.

According to an unverified Twitter account under Blomkamp's name, the film was never connected to a studio (what would most likely be Fox). "They didn't really even know I was working on it," he wrote. Based on the fantastic art, we hope Blomkamp's addition to the "Alien" franchise will get reevaluated.

This 3D Printed 'Spider Dress' Is The Robotic Fashion Of The Future

If one of your New Year's resolutions is to increase the space between you and strangers in public settings, a piece of futuristic clothing dubbed "Spider Dress" is about to make all your 2015 dreams come true.

From the mind of engineer and designer Anouk Wipprecht, "Spider Dress" is a piece of wearable technology that combines 3D printing with animatronic mechanics to create a truly sci-fi fashion experience. A series of skeletal-like limbs "respond to external stimuli" thanks to a configuration proximity and respiration sensors, meant to "defend the personal space of the wearer."

By defend, we mean the dress transforms into what appears to be a giant, aggressive arachnid, prepared to attack with all limbs at the ready. Conversely, if the wearer is calm, the appendages can beckon an outsider with more welcoming gestures.

The "Spider Dress" bodice was 3D-printed in a selective laser sintering technique

“It knows when you are focused or distracted,” Wipprecht explained to Vice. “It knows when your heartbeat or stress level rises and it records with a camera when your brain activity is highest to provide a sort of mood or attention map of your day.”

The design, connected to an Intel Edison platform with input from Philip H. Wilck of Studio Palermo, is still in the testing phase, and will make its debut next week Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. In the meantime, you can check out a teaser of the fashion of tomorrow above.

'Sopranos' Strip Club Robbed AGAIN For 2nd Time In 2 weeks

LODI, N.J. (AP) — The New Jersey strip club that was the real-life stand-in for the Bada Bing on HBO's "Sopranos" has been hit by criminals again.

Satin Dolls in Lodi was robbed by two armed men a few days before Christmas. Now, police say someone broke into the club early Friday morning. Police tell The Record (http://bit.ly/1An6hbH) that the break-in occurred between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. Friday. The would-be thieves smashed through the club's glass front door and pried open the office door to get to a safe, but did not take anything.

The earlier robbery cost the club about $30,000.

The Bada Bing was seen frequently on the show, which ran on HBO from 1999 to 2007.

Want To Fly Like Elvis? Now, You Can!

Jan 2 (Reuters) - Elvis Presley's pair of personal jets, one complete with gilded wash basin and plush sleeping quarters, will go under the hammer in a sealed-bid auction for a piece of mile-high rock and roll memorabilia, Julien's Auctions said on Friday.

Jets "Lisa Marie" and "Hound Dog II" that the late King of Rock and Roll designed himself will be offered together to bidders and are expected to fetch between $10 million and $15 million, the Beverly Hills, California, auction house said.

They are no longer airworthy, but have been on view for visitors at Graceland - Presley's Memphis, Tennessee estate - for the past three decades.

Presley bought the Convair 880 jet from Delta Air Lines in 1975, two years before his death at age 42, for $250,000. He named it "Lisa Marie" after his daughter.

Presley spent more than $300,000 refurbishing the jet with a penthouse bedroom, executive conference room, bar and videotape system linked to four TVs. He had the plane painted red, white and blue with his motto "TCB" - "Takin' Care of Business" - on the tail.

He purchased the eight-to-10 passenger "Hound Dog II," a Lockheed Jetstar, also in 1975 for about $900,000 while waiting on the refurbishment of the "Lisa Marie."

The four-engine 28-passenger Convair could fly Presley, who preferred to travel at night, up to 3,000 miles (4,800 kilometers).

Only 65 of the Convair 880 model jets were produced from 1959 to 1962.

The buyer also has the option to purchase several acres adjacent to Graceland to display the jets, independent of the Presley museum.

An agreement between Graceland and the jets' current owners, whose identity was not disclosed, is set to expire at the end of April. (Reporting by Reuters TV; Writing by Eric Kelsey in Los Angeles; Editing by Mary Milliken)

Men See Snout, Free Moose Buried In Avalanche

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A moose buried by an avalanche on an Alaska mountain had its luck changed by three men passing on snowmobiles.

The Alaska Dispatch News (http://bit.ly/1AinLEQ) reports that the three Matanuska-Susitna Borough residents spotted the animal's snout sticking out of the snow and used shovels to free the moose.

Marty Mobley, Rob Uphus and Avery Vunichich were on at outing Sunday at Hatcher Pass about 55 miles northeast of Anchorage when they passed a small hillside that had both ski and moose tracks.

When they returned an hour later, an avalanche had covered the tracks.

Mobley says he saw something move in the debris and it turned out to be a snout, not a skier.

After 10 minutes of digging, the moose stood up, towered over its rescuers and ran off.

Why Dirty Thoughts Could Improve Your Memory

There are a dizzying number of popular tricks for improving memory, from the classic "memory palace" technique to the Baker-baker method to Franklin Roosevelt's favored technique of imagining a person's name stamped across their forehead. The idea of trying to remember all these memory tricks alone can be a daunting task.

But Ed Cooke, Grand Master of Memory and author of Remember, Remember: Learn the Stuff You Thought You Never Could, has a simpler -- and perhaps more enjoyable -- way to remember important information. Cooke's suggestion? Think of something, well, dirty.

We all know the feeling of struggling to commit important facts to memory. Cooke explained in an interview with the Daily Mail that linking a unique and memorable thought -- like a sexual fantasy -- with something more mundane that you need to know can help you to better recall it.

Though it doesn't necessarily have to be dirty, sexual thoughts tend to be memorable and emotionally charged. Really, Cooke explains, anything unexpected (like rude or violent thoughts) can do the trick.

"A great rule of thumb for what’s memorable is 'whatever would grab your attention as you’re wandering down the street will grab your attention when you’re looking for a memory'," Cooke told the Daily Mail. "Nakedness, things that are taboo, extremely attractive people, things we intrigued by: these will grab your attention in the world, and memories that have these elements will also stick out."

This theory, perhaps, was an inspiration behind the popular math rhyme "Chicks, chicks, dirty chicks, six times six is thirty-six," often employed by schoolchildren learning their multiplication tables.

Thoughts or images that evoke emotions can be particular effective, Cooke said. On a more serious note, psychologists studying memory have found that "flashbulb memories" -- detailed recollections of traumatic events that can be decades old, like the 9/11 attacks or the assassination of JFK -- are likely so vivid, at least in part, because of their emotional character.

As memory researcher Dr. James McGaugh, director of the Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory at the University of California–Irvine, told the American Psychological Association, "Just a tiny bit of emotional arousal will influence whether you remember something just a few minutes later."

The Struggles Of Flying Coach Make The Perfect Horror Movie Trailer

"Behind that curtain there's a place where the wifi is free... And so are the people."

Unfortunately, most of us will never be able to take every flight in first class, but this horror movie parody from

Nacho Punch might help ease the pain of paying $18 for a panini.

Between crying babies, those non-reclining last row seats and in-flight movies like "The Croods," "Worst Class" would be a pretty scary movie if it were real. We can see the movie poster tagline now: "MY HEADPHONES WERE IN THAT BAG!"

Street-Sweeper DUI Suspect Leads Cops On 35 Mph Chase

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) — The operator of a street-sweeping vehicle who was spotted driving erratically on a highway has been arrested on drunken-driving charges.

New York State Police say Jerry Mitchell, of Brooklyn, was charged with aggravated DWI and aggravated unlicensed operation on New Year's Day. They say his blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit. Police say the 48-year-old driver was traveling eastbound on Long Island's Southern State Parkway when a state trooper tried to pull him over.

Police say he fled, driving 35 mph with police in pursuit. He later stopped and surrendered.

It wasn't immediately known if Mitchell had a lawyer.

This Wearable, Computer-Controlled Sphere Is Dancing In A New York Museum

There's a computer-controlled sphere dancing in New York City this month, and you have about a week left to see it.

The oddity is Maria Blaisse's "Breathing Sphere," and it's currently housed at the Noguchi Museum in Long Island City. The Dutch designer created the motorized globe of woven bamboo in order to spark "a spatial and formal dialogue" between the piece and the famously serene Noguchi haven, founded by Japanese-American artist and namesake Isamu Noguchi.

Formally named "Arduino" after the microchip that governs its every move, the breathing sculpture appears like a living creature as it pulses in the museum. It appeared even more alive on December 7 when dancers Carrie Ellmore-Tallitsch, Sara Jimenez, and Cynthia Stanley performed with three of Blaisse's sculptures, plucked from the Pratt Manhattan Gallery where they're on display courtesy of slowLab.

“It’s kind of like swimming for the first time,” Jimenez explained to Queens Chronicle after the performance. “It’s this constant texture around you that your body feels intuitively connected with in some way.”

Check out the "Breathing Sphere" above and head over to the Noguchi before January 4 to see Blaisse's work and a video presentation of dancers interacting with the piece, shot by filmmaker Jellie Dekker.

Strange Object Near Milky Way's Black Hole Stirs Scientific Debate

Astronomers may be a step closer to solving the mystery of a strange object seen orbiting the massive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy.

Dubbed G2, the object was first spotted in 2011 and was thought initially to be a gas cloud on the verge of being ripped apart by the black hole, which is known as Sagittarius A*. But when the object stayed intact, some scientists suggested G2 was something else: a pair of binary stars.

But now a team of scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching, Germany have sparked new debate, offering more evidence to support the gas cloud theory.

For their research, the team used a computer model to compare the orbit of G2 to that of G1, another object observed near Sagittarius A* a decade ago.

“We explored the connection between G1 and G2 and find an astonishing similarity in both orbits,” team member Dr. Stefan Gillessen said in a written statement.

(Story continues below image.)

mystery object milky way

High-resolution images of the center of our Milky Way, with x marking the galaxy's black hole. G1 and G2 are shown in blue and red, respectively.

The similarity suggests that the two objects are dense clumps of gas that are part of a larger "gas streamer"--sort of like beads on a string, Space.com reported.

“The good agreement of the model with the data renders the idea that G1 and G2 are part of the same gas streamer highly plausible,” Gillessen said in the statement.

The new research was published online in November in the preprint journal arXiv.org and has been accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal.

Florida Couple Spent Days In Unlocked Closet, Thought They Were Trapped: Cops

A pair of hapless accused trespassers spent two days in a closet, thinking they were trapped inside.

John Arwood and Amber Campbell told police that someone had chased them into the closet at Daytona State College's Marine and Environmental Science Center on Sunday. Once they were inside the janitor's closet, they couldn't get out.

But it wasn't until Tuesday that Arwood decided to call 911. When Daytona Beach police arrived, they discovered that the door did not lock.

Cops found human feces and suspected drug paraphernalia in the closet, but they didn't find any drugs.

Arwood and Campbell were both charged with trespassing. Campbell was also charged with violating her probation.

In 2013, she was arrested after escaping a mental health treatment facility, crashing a car and escaping from the back of a police cruiser.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Arwood's record includes five jail sentences in Florida since 2000, with offenses including armed burglary, possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana, and fleeing law enforcement.

This Is What 2015 Will Look Like According To 'Back To The Future'

Now that it's 2015, there's one question that's on everyone's mind: Where is my hoverboard?

"Back to the Future Part II" definitely filled our heads with grand visions of 2015. There were hoverboards, flying cars, futuristic clothing styles and, of course, high-tech fax machines. In the end, it's obvious the movie got a lot wrong (Sorry, faxing). However, there are some things from Marty McFly's future that we can see today.

A company called AeroMobil has actually invented a flying car and pro skater Tony Hawk found out firsthand what it's like to ride a hoverboard.

Here's a look at the year ahead according to "Back to the Future":

As Newsweek points out, the movie was made to be fun and not to be scientifically accurate. In any case, from the things it did get right, it's clear that where 2015 is going we don't need roads.

Hair Fetishist Has Brush With Law After Dollar Store Haircut

Getting your hair did never sounded so creepy.

An Oregon man with a history of hair-related misdemeanors allegedly got caught cutting off some of a woman's locks in an Oregon City Dollar Tree store, police said. Jared Walter, 27, has been arrested several times in the past for touching himself while secretly cutting a victim's hair, according to KPTV.

This time, he didn't get off so easily. The 31-year-old victim said she could feel him cutting her hair while she waited in line to pay for her items.

"So I just immediately started screaming and you know yelling like, 'get away from me,'" she told the station. "He is obviously showing that he is in no spot to be in public and is not a safe person."

Walter fled, but police tracked him down nearby. They charged him with harassment and also slapped him with a parole violation.

KPTV reports:

Walter pleaded guilty in May 2013 to charges including third-degree sex abuse and misdemeanor public indecency.

He was arrested after multiple reports of lewd acts on TriMet buses in Portland and Clackamas County.

Witnesses and surveillance video helped lead police to Walter. He was sentenced to jail time instead of prison, because the crimes he pleaded guilty to were misdemeanors. He was also not required to register as a sex offender.

The suspect's constant clandestine clippings have earned him the moniker "The TriMet Barber."

He was also reportedly arrested more than five years ago after police say he applied superglue to a woman's hair and then cut it while riding the bus.

He's currently in the Clackamas County Jail.

Arthur Lampitt Has 7-Inch Car Part Removed From Arm 51 Years After Wreck

CREVE COEUR, Mo. (AP) — Fifty-one years ago, Arthur Lampitt of Granite City, Illinois, smashed his 1963 Thunderbird into a truck. This week during surgery in suburban St. Louis, a 7-inch turn signal lever from that T-Bird was removed from his left arm.

Dr. Timothy Lang removed the lever Wednesday during a 45-minute operation. Lampitt, now 75, is recovering at home. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1EOtGa6 ) reports that the accident broke Lampitt's hip, drawing attention away from the arm, which healed.

A decade or so ago, his arm set off a metal detector at a courthouse. An X-ray showed a slender object the length of a pencil, but since it caused no pain or hardship, Lampitt was told to let it be.

He was moving concrete blocks a few weeks ago when the arm began to hurt for the first time.

"Everything was fine until it started to get bigger," Lampitt's wife, Betty, said. "The arm started bulging."

Lampitt decided to have surgery. He initially wasn't sure what was in the arm. He wondered if perhaps a medical instrument had been left during the emergency room visit in 1963.

He unearthed a collection of old photos of the mangled Thunderbird taken by a friend at the scene. He noticed the metal blinker lever was missing from the left side of the steering column. He figured that was it, and surgery at City Place Surgery Center in Creve Coeur, Missouri, confirmed it.

"Seven inches long," Lang told Betty.

"Oh, my God," Betty said.

Lang said a protective pocket grew around the lever.

"We see all kinds of foreign objects like nails or pellets, but usually not this large, usually not a turn signal from a 1963 T-Bird," Lang said. "Something this large often gets infected."

Lampitt wasn't sure what he'd do with the lever — maybe make a key chain out of it.

"We'll figure out something, I am sure," he said.

New Year's Eve Street Parties Turn Berlin Into A Freaking War Zone (RAW VIDEO)

Berlin, Germany, rang in the new year in style with an official fireworks display and a free David Hasselhoff concert. But if footage from the unofficial afterparty is to be believed, it's a minor miracle that the city didn't burn to the ground.

It's hard to take anything on the Internet at face value, but one thing's for sure: This video is cray cray.

A Reddit user posted this raw footage to one of the site's video forums on New Year's Day. It shows people filming the unfolding chaos as fireworks explode on a street in what's supposedly Berlin.

At one point, a particularly large rocket explodes, wowing the crowd. Moments later, someone walks by while apparently patting out a smoldering piece of clothing. All this takes place amid a backdrop of smoke and burning projectiles.

Other accounts of the impromptu celebrations littered social media:

Cocaine Tamales, Meth-Filled Cheese: U.S. Customs' Strangest Border Busts

Meth inside a cheese wheel. Opium inside 66 bars of soap from Thailand. Smugglers were imaginative when trying to sneak drugs and other illegal objects into the country last year. But the novel hiding for stashing their contraband didn't always slip past the guards and agents watching American borders. U.S. Customs and Border Protection took to Twitter to count down the 10 strangest busts of 2014.

"We find things in really weird places," said U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokeswoman Jennifer Evanitsky, who amassed the list. "Smugglers got creative."

Of course, the most successful smugglers won't be shamed by winding up on this list.

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: The Strange But True Life Of Robert Ripley

In the world of weird news, perhaps, no one stands taller than Robert Ripley, the creator of Ripley's Believe It Or Not!

Ripley started out as a sports cartoonist, but managed to turn an interest in the strange and bizarre aspects of the world into an international conglomerate that includes books, newspaper columns, TV shows and "Odditoriums" where the weirder parts of the collection are displayed.

The life of this weird news wizard is the focus of "American Experience Presents 'Ripley: Believe It or Not,'" a special premiering Jan. 6 on PBS.

This exclusive video clip explains why Believe It Or Not! remains so unbelievably popular 65 years after Ripley's death.

Bae, It Would Be Cray To Stop Using These 'Banned' Words

If you had plans to spend next year calling your boo bae, describing the chilly weather as a polar vortex or talking up your foodie lifestyle, cancel them immediately. Those three terms can never be spoken again.

At least, that’s the tongue-in-cheek goal of the “List of Words Banished from the Queen's English for Mis-use, Over-use and General Uselessness," released Wednesday by Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The college's 40th annual list has a total of 12 new words we're supposed to collectively excise from our vocabulary in 2015.

The other nine entries include hack, skill set, swag, curate(d), friend-raising, cra-cra (alternately spelled cray-cray), enhanced interrogation, takeaway and nation when used to denote the fans of a particular sports team (e.g. Cubs Nation).

The banished word list was started in January of 1976 by W.T. Rabe, a savvy former LSSU public relations director, who's also known for inventing the school traditions of issuing unicorn questing licenses and burning a snowman each spring.

The first list came directly from LSSU staff and Rabe’s personal language pet peeves. But at this point in time (that phrase made the list in 1976), it’s generated by the wider populace, with people submitting the words they loathe on the school’s website and a committee compiling the final selection each December. The list has since grown to include more than 800 entries.

Some of the phrases on the list have been faulted for redundancy, like 1995's vast majority; others, like enhanced interrogation, speak to a dead serious (another banned phrase) critique of cultural mores. Other words are clearly targeted because they're trending (yep, also banned).

Nominators also take issue with overused words that become divorced from their original meaning, like using "hack" to describe mascara application tips or calling a box of different dog foods "curated."

It's easy to get annoyed by slang terms that crop up suddenly -- especially if you need an article from Time to understand them -- and then die out within a year or two anyway. But part of the fun of language is the difficulty of predicting which words will naturally fall by the wayside -- we barely knew you, cybarian and chillaxin' -- and which ones will become so commonplace -- prioritize, parenting, brainstorm, blog -- it's strange to think of trying to ban them. With something as delightful and amazing as language, half the fun for wordsmiths is watching usage change over time.

In some ways, putting a straight-up ban on words that are part of people's everyday conversations seems like a stodgy approach. However, LSSU's banished word list serves as a reminder to be creative and deft with word choice -- to encourage thinking outside of the box -- rather than as a prescriptive ban. It can also just be an interesting snapshot of what’s hot and hated in language year-by-year.

That said, if you catch yourself telling your bae, who’s a real foodie, about a cra-cra hack for getting free swag, it might be time to think about expanding your vocabulary.

Or not, whatever. It's all good.

Cameraman Barely Escapes Lava Splatter (VIDEO)

When you film lava for a living, you're bound to have a few close calls, and New Zealand cameraman Bradley Ambrose just captured an epic one on camera.

"That was probably my closest call ever to being completely covered in lava bombs," the self-proclaimed adventure-seeker says in the video above.

Ambrose was filming at the Marum lava lake on the remote volcanic island of Ambrym when a surprise burst of lava almost rained over him. A pulse of gas caused "a huge lava splatter that basically covered this entire area," Ambrose said. "And I was in the middle of it."

Ambrose was able to run away quickly enough, but both his camera and the GoPro mounted on his head recorded the intense moment from two points of view.

(Story continues below)

According to the video's description, Ambrose has taken temperatures of previous lava ejections in the area that measured between 600 to 800 degrees Celsius (1,112 to 1,472 degrees Fahrenheit). He has spent the last few years as a breaking news cameraman and adventure photographer, filming extreme weather events from all over the world, including in Siberia, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Australia and Vanuatu, the South Pacific country where the above video was filmed.

Earlier this year, Ambrose and veteran New Zealand filmmaker Geoff Mackley led documentarians George Kourounis and Sam Cossman, as well as a GoPro filming crew, deep into the Marum crater -- a place the island's villagers call the "Entrance to Hell." That video became one of the most viral GoPro videos of 2014.

Ambrose may be an adventure-seeker, but his most recent close call seems to have shaken him up a bit. "There's not one shot that's worth that," he says in the video.
