Israeli Tank Stolen From A Military Zone Found Discarded In Junkyard

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli authorities are trying to figure out how a heavily armored, but unarmed, tank was stolen from a military training zone after finding it discarded in a junkyard.

The Israeli Merkava 2 tank disappeared from a training zone in northern Israel near the coastal city of Haifa, the Israeli army said Wednesday. The training zone is closed to the public when in use, but is otherwise accessible to passersby.

Police said the 65-ton tank was found abandoned in a scrapyard near a military base. In a video from the scene, the army green tank towers alongside rusty scraps of metal and other industrial castoffs.

The army said the Merkava 2 was decommissioned years ago and was unarmed. It said it had been used most recently as a “stationary vehicle for soldiers’ exercises.”

Police said they had arrested two suspects in connection with the theft.

Lion Cub Mysteriously Found Wandering Road In Northern Serbia

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — A lion cub, only a few months old, was taken to a zoo in northern Serbia on Thursday after it was seen wandering on a local road, officials and media said.

The female cub, found on the outskirts of Subotica, a town near the border with Hungary, was malnourished and weak, said Sonja Mandic, from the Palic Zoo.

Local media said that a Subotica resident spotted the cub on the road and called the police, who then took it to the zoo. A video on social media shows the cub appearing from the grass and stepping onto the road.

Reports also said that the cub was friendly and wasn’t afraid of people. A policeman and local residents could be seen in other videos and photos caressing the cub.

Mandic said the lion was in “pretty poor shape” and was receiving treatment and infusion to improve its condition.

“It could be 3 to 6 months old or 5 to 6, but is malnourished and possibly underdeveloped,” said Mandic.

Police are yet to issue an official statement. The smuggling of wild and rare animals is believed to be widespread in the Balkan region.

Walt Disney World Closes Rides After Black Bear Spotted Near Big Thunder Railroad

A black bear showed up at Walt Disney World on Monday, but not for any country jamboree.

Nearly half the park was closed in the morning hours after the bear was sighted in a tree near Big Thunder Mountain in Frontierland, according to WDWMagic.com.

The adult female bear was later apprehended by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conversation Commission (FWC), according to a Walt Disney World statement to HuffPost.

Some of the rides that were closed down included the Country Bear Jamboree, Big Thunder Mountain, the Haunted Mansion and Jungle Cruise.

A spokesperson for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conversation Commission told Orlando ABC affiliate WFTV that wildlife biologists and law enforcement officers showed up at the park to deal with the creature.

“In most cases, it is best for bears to be given space and to move along on their own, but given this situation, staff are working on capturing and relocating the bear,” the spokesperson said.

The agency spokesperson noted that bears tend to be active during the fall as they pack on the pounds to prepare for winter hibernation.

“This particular bear was likely moving through the area searching for food,” the spokeswoman said.

NBC Orlando affiliate WESH reported that Frontierland, Liberty Square and Adventureland were opened around 1 p.m. and around 1:15 p.m., officials involved in the rescue efforts were seen carrying a large black figure in a white tarp.

Lemur On The Lam: Video Shows Critter Leading Cops On Wild Pursuit In Missouri

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Bounding through a darkened city park, a lemur managed to stay one step ahead of police officers armed only with a large towel.

Bodycam video shows the two officers’ attempts to nab the speedy little primate, which made a dash for freedom Tuesday in Springfield, Missouri.

“We see the tail,” one officer says with a chuckle as he tries to get closer.

Not giving up easily, the lemur raises its distinctive black-and-white banded tail and dashes away. It sprints and weaves through a parking lot, down a sidewalk, across grass and around trees.

Eventually the officer tosses the towel like a net, but the lemur slips out and darts away.

“Dang it!” the officer exclaims, as a few civilians help try to corral the critter.

Finally, another officer is able to grab the lemur and hold it still as his partner gently gets it “snuggled up” in the towel, the Springfield Police Department said in a Facebook post.

The animal’s owners had reported it missing, the department said, and were later reunited with it. But they won’t be able to keep it — city ordinance bans having wild animals as pets.

Instead, police say the lemur has been connected with a local wildlife rescue agency where it will be “well cared for and loved.”

Florida Man Rescued AGAIN While Attempting To Cross Atlantic In Floating Hamster Wheel

A Florida ultra-marathoner and peace activist is facing felony charges after allegedly attempting to run across the Atlantic in a homemade hamster wheel, in what authorities said was at least his fourth attempt.

Reza “Ray” Baluchi’s intercoastal stunt ended approximately 60 miles off the coast of South Carolina last week after the U.S. Coast Guard said they spotted him floating in the circular cage ― initially near Savannah, Georgia ― during routine preparations ahead of Hurricane Idalia.

The 51-year-old said he was heading for London, England, but he was repeatedly told that his vessel was unsafe and should not be in use. It was described as staying afloat through wiring and buoys, according to a copy of the criminal complaint.

Baluchi allegedly refused to leave his vessel, which authorities described as a hydro pod, and he threatened to stab himself if anyone tried to stop him.

The officers stayed with him for three days as he continued to make his way up the coast, during which he also allegedly threatened to blow himself up with a device that was later found to be phony, authorities said.

He ultimately surrendered near Georgetown, South Carolina, on Aug. 29 and was brought to a Miami federal court where he was charged with obstruction of boarding and violation of the Captain of the Port Order.

According to the court documents, this was Baluchi’s fourth attempt to traverse the high seas in the floating craft, with him previously stopped by the Coast Guard in 2014, 2016 and 2021.

His first attempt cost taxpayers more than $140,000, the Coast Guard said in a statement after that failed attempt to reach the Bermuda Triangle in 2014. The law enforcement agency said it provided Baluchi with an outlined series of requirements if he wanted to safely and legally travel in such a vessel again.

These requirements were ignored, authorities said, and he was rescued in another homemade vessel in 2016 while attempting to travel from Florida to Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Cuba and then back again.

His publicist at the time told the South Florida Sun Sentinel that it was her understanding that the Coast Guard’s order was merely a recommendation and not a mandate. She added that he would “definitely try again.”

Baluchi has publicly presented himself as a peace activist. His website states that his mission is “showing the world that anything is possible if only you believe.”

An attorney listed as representing Baluchi did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.

Police Rush To Report Of A ‘Ritual Mass Killing,’ But It Was Just A Yoga Class

Savasan-huh? It seems a concerned onlooker in Lincolnshire, England, took corpse pose a little too literally.

According to a Facebook post by Seascape Cafe at the Observatory — a cafe that is also a community space, art gallery and exercise studio — police rushed to the business shortly after a yoga class wrapped Wednesday around 9:30 p.m. because a concerned passerby mistook the final resting position the entire class was participating in for a “mass killing.”

The final resting pose, also known as corpse pose or savasana, typically occurs at the end of a yoga class, in which people lie on their backs with their eyes closed in order to sink into a meditative state.

The unidentified person “reported a mass killing in our building. Having seen several people laying on the floor,” the Seascape Cafe Facebook post reads. “Which actually turned out to be the Yoga Class in meditation.”

“We are not part of any mad cult or crazy clubs,” the post continues. “All in all this situation turned out positive and we are of course grateful.”

Lincolnshire police confirmed to Sky News and the BBC that officers received a call about the incident at 8:56 p.m. from a caller “with good intentions.”

Millie Laws, who taught the yoga class, went into more details about the incident with The Washington Post Friday. Mills told the Post that seven students were lying on their backs for about 30 minutes as she banged on a shamanic drum in a dark room lit by just candles during Wednesday’s hour-and-half restorative yoga class. She told the newspaper that she was also wearing a flowy top that could have resembled a robe.

Mills said she noticed a couple outside the studio walking a dog and peering through the window at what must have been a very bewildering scene for them.

“They reported to the police that they’d seen somebody walking around in a room lit up with candles and what looked like dead people lying all over the floor,” Laws told The Post. “The couple thought it was some sort of ritual mass killing.”

Mills added to The Post that the class had already ended by the time a horde of police officers had shown up, and that the yogis experienced a “lovely relaxation session with no interruptions, thankfully.”

The cafe also thanked the police on Facebook for their “prompt response.”

Revelers Hurl Tomatoes At Each Other At Spanish Town's Tomatina Party

BUÑOL, Spain (AP) — Some 15,000 people, including many tourists, pasted each other with tomatoes Wednesday as Spain’s annual “Tomatina” street battle took place in the eastern town of Buñol.

Workers on trucks tipped 120 tons of overripe tomatoes into the main street of the town for participants to throw.

The street fight leaves both the street, its houses and participants drenched in red pulp.

Tickets for the festival start at 12 euros ($13).

The town hoses down the area and the revelers shower off within minutes of the hourlong noon battle finishing.

The festival, held on the last Wednesday of August, was inspired by a food fight between local children in 1945 in the town, located in a tomato-producing region.

Media attention in the 1980s turned it into a national and international event, drawing participants from every corner of the world.

Participants use swimming goggles to protect their eyes and usually dress in T-shirts and shorts.

The party is ranked by Spain as an international tourism attraction.

Nebraska Police Issue Citation To Driver With Bull Riding Shotgun

Some police officers in Nebraska recently had the weirdest traffic stop ever ― and that’s no bull.

Sorry, actually, there was a bull ― and it was riding shotgun in a car along Route 275 near Norfolk Wednesday morning, News Channel Nebraska reported.

Norfolk officers responding to a call about a “vehicle with a cow inside” rolling through the town assumed they would encounter a smaller animal, Denver NBC affiliate KUSA reported.

“They thought that it was going to be a calf, something small or something that would actually fit inside the vehicle,” Captain Chad Reiman told News Channel Nebraska.

Instead, they saw “Howdy Doody,” a full-size Watusi bull owned by Lee Meyer of Neligh.

Reiman said the officers carried out a traffic stop and “addressed some traffic violations that were occurring with that particular situation.”

Meyer was only given a warning — not a moooving violation — and asked to take Howdy Doody back home and out of the city.

Howdy Doody is a celebrity in his home town, often appearing at parades. But the bull’s fame apparently hadn’t reached Norfolk at the time of his joyride, according to Meyer’s wife, Rhonda Meyer.

“I get a phone call at work from my son wanting to know if (his) Dad’s in jail,” she told News Channel Nebraska. “Someone sent this (news) to him, and so yeah, it just kinda went downhill from there.”

Traffickers Plead Guilty To Smuggling Endangered Sea Cucumbers

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Wildlife traffickers pleaded guilty this week in federal court in California to illegally importing endangered sea cucumbers — which are prized in China for food and medicine and as a reputed aphrodisiac — from Mexico.

Zunyu Zhao and Xionwei Xiao were charged with conspiracy and illegal importation of brown sea cucumbers worth over $10,000 from 2017 to 2019 and are scheduled to be sentenced in September and November, respectively.

Prosecutors haven’t said where in the ocean the sea cucumbers were obtained. But the defendants were allegedly found with the smuggled bottom-feeders as they crossed from Mexico into the U.S. at Calexico. Zhao and Xiao agreed to pay restitution to the Mexican government’s environmental protection agency. They could get up to 25 years in prison.

Attorneys for Zhao and Xiao did not respond to requests for comment.

After seizing the sea cucumbers at the border, investigators found text messages and images sent between Zhao and Xiao about the transactions. The sea cucumbers are being held as evidence by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

“This office is committed to upholding the twin pillars of marine biodiversity and conservation,” acting U.S. Attorney Andrew R. Haden said in a statement. “Criminals considering poaching protected species should be aware that this office will diligently investigate, thoroughly prosecute, and seek restitution no matter the species.”

Sea cucumbers are in the same family as sea stars and sea urchins and can measure up to 7 feet. Brown sea cucumbers have a smooth body dotted by warts and can grow to 2 feet.

The animals operate as a vacuum on the sea floor, breaking down particles that become part of the ocean’s nutrient cycle, said Gordon Hendler, Museum of Natural History in Los Angeles curator of echinoderms.

Prosecutors haven’t said where the cucumbers were headed. But a thriving black market frequently gets them to China, where they are a delicacy. They are traditionally served dried or fresh and often braised with fish, vegetables and traditional sauces. They are also sought to treat join pain, prevent cancer and serve as anti-inflammatories — medical uses sometimes validated by science. They’re also considered an aphrodisiac.

But the brown sea cucumber — Isostichopus fuscus — is overfished, and that’s cause for regulations around their harvest.

Harvesting sea cucumbers is permitted in the United States and many parts of the world, but in limited quantities and only during high season. Defendants Zhao and Xiao did not have appropriate permits and documentation, according to Kelly Thornton, spokesperson for the U.S. attorney’s office.

In 2017, a father-son partnership smuggled more than $17 million worth of sea cucumbers from Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula to the United States and exported them to Asia. From 2015 to 2020, the Sri Lankan Navy and the Indian Coast Guard made over 500 arrests associated with $2.84 million in sea cucumber thefts. And in a pending case, a defendant illegally trafficked sea cucumbers along with sea horses and totatoba fish bellies in Chula Vista, California, from 2016 to 2021.

“One of the highest priorities of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Office of Law Enforcement is to investigate individuals involved in the unlawful commercial trafficking and smuggling of wildlife here and around the world,” said Manisa Kung, an agent for the service.

'T. Rexes' Race To Photo Finish At Washington State Track

AUBURN, Wash. (AP) — A track for live horse racing in suburban Seattle turned prehistoric over the weekend as more than 200 people ran down the track cloaked in inflatable Tyrannosaurus rex dinosaur costumes.

The 2023 T-Rex World Championships at Emerald Downs — an event that started in 2017 as a pest control company’s team-building activity — ended in a photo finish on Sunday, with three competitors hitting the finish line together.

Ocean Kim took top honors in the 100-yard (91.2-meter) dash after officials agreed Kim, of Kailua, Hawaii, hit the finish wire just ahead of the pack. Second place went to Colton Winegar of Boise, Idaho, who entered as Deno the Dino. Seth Hirschi, of Renton, as Rex Ray Machine, finished in third.

The actual T. rex roamed the planet between 65 million and 67 million years ago. A study published two years ago in the journal Science estimated that about 2.5 billion of the dinosaurs ever lived. Hollywood movies such as the “Jurassic Park” franchise have added to the public fascination with the carnivorous creature.

New Hunt For Loch Ness Monster Leads To 'Bizarre' Sounds, 'Unexplained' Footage

A massive new search for evidence of the Loch Ness monster hasn’t turned up any solid proof of Nessie just yet ― but the team behind the hunt says there were some enticing signs that something could be out there.

“We heard some fantastic bizarre sounds on Friday,” Alan McKenna from Loch Ness Exploration said in a news conference on Sunday. The Loch Ness Center in Inverness, Scotland, described the sounds as “four, very distinctive noises” in a Facebook update.

The noises were not captured on audio as the recording equipment was not plugged in.

McKenna offered some theories behind the sounds.

“It may well be gas escaping from the bottom of the loch,” he said. “It could be an animal or, of course, it could be the elusive Loch Ness monster.”

The Loch Ness Center said on Facebook that it is currently reviewing some “unexplained” footage turned in by volunteers who took part in the expedition.

McKenna said about 100 people assisted the search in person each day over the weekend, with some 300 more searching webcams for signs of the infamous monster.

They also sent out a thermal imaging drone to scan the waters.

“There’s a lot of data. It’s going to take us time to get through all of that,” McKenna said, promising to make it public once they’ve had a chance to review it.

Nessie sightings have been reported for centuries, and the notion of an unknown creature lurking in the loch has been part of the public fascination for more than a century ― especially since the famed “Surgeon’s Photograph,” which was later exposed as a hoax.

Some believe the sightings were caused by eels, sturgeon, delusions or simple pareidolia, among other possible explanations.

Scantily Clad Riders Cruise Philadelphia Streets In 14th Naked Bike Ride

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Hundreds of people in various states of dress ― or undress – set out Saturday for a ride through some of Philadelphia’s main streets and sights for the 14th Philly Naked Bike Ride.

The annual ride, which started in 2009, is billed as promoting cycling as a key form of transportation and fuel-conscious consumption. It is also meant to encourage body positivity. Organizers stress, however, that participants aren’t required to ride completely in the buff, telling them to get “as bare as you dare.”

The course, roughly 13 miles (21 kilometers) this year, changes annually but generally passes city landmarks. This year, bikers went by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, site of the steps featured in the “Rocky” movies, the historic City Hall, tony Rittenhouse Square and the South Street entertainment area. The ride was to end at Independence Hall.

Garry J. Gadikian, from Atlantic City, New Jersey, speaking in Fairmount Park at a pre-race get-together, said the ride was something he had wanted to do for years.

“It’s a very freeing experience, and definitely something that you should do once in your life for that freedom,” he said before joining about 100 fellow participants who were having their bare flesh adorned with body paint and glitter.

Christopher Jordan, who works in information technology in New York City, also joined the ride for the first time. He said he thought it was “more than just about taking the clothes off.”

“It’s just feeling comfortable with your own body and it’s OK to look at other people too, compare or not compare or just see how other people feel comfortable in their own bodies,” Jordan said.

Organizers said the ride wasn’t limited only to bicycles. Scooters, e-bikes, rollerblades, skates, skateboards, and even joggers were also welcome, although motorized bikes and scooters were asked to watch their speed. Organizers also point to a code of conduct that bars any kind of physical or sexual harassment.

“Having a column of nude cyclists extending blocks behind, blocks through the city, and causing a decent amount of disruption, interrupting dinner hour” helps show how many cyclists the city has — telling drivers “they need to share the road,” said Wesley Noonan-Sessa, an event facilitator who regularly rides his bike in Philadelphia.

But, he said, he thinks the naked element also helps in ”desexualizing nudity.”

The ride used to be held in September, often in temperatures around 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21.1 degrees Celsius), but enough of the naked riders mentioned feeling chilly that it was moved to August beginning a few years ago. The 2020 ride was called off because of the pandemic.

Competitors Get Down And Dirty At Britain's Bog Snorkeling Championships

LONDON (AP) — Intrepid athletes donned snorkels and slithered through slime on Sunday during one of Britain’s quirkiest sporting events: the World Bog Snorkeling Championships.

The annual competition in the tiny town of Llanwrtyd Wells, Wales, sees competitors race to complete two lengths of a 60-yard (55 meter) water-filled trench cut through a peat bog. They can use flippers on their feet, but conventional swimming strokes are banned.

Some contestants accessorized their snorkels, masks and flippers with more flamboyant touches ― one carried a giant plastic toad on their head, another had a bathing cap adorned with flowers. Spectators also got in on the fun, with two wearing pink cardboard boxes proclaiming them to be limited edition bog-snorkeling Barbie and Ken.

Competitors at the 35th annual contest were hoping to beat the time of current world record-holder Neil Rutter, who won in 1 minute, 18 seconds in 2018.

Kitten Found In Stolen, Crashed Car Belongs To Suspect, Police Say

MERIDEN, Conn. (AP) — Police who found a kitten in a stolen car say they have located the animal’s owner: A juvenile suspect who fled and was arrested after the car crashed.

The Meriden Police Department said on its Facebook page Thursday that the gray-and-white male cat has been returned to the suspect’s mother.

The department said the youth said nothing to officers about the pet, which was found under a seat. Instead, police were led to the owner by someone who responded to the department’s Facebook post earlier this week looking for the animal’s owner.

In the meantime, a number of people contacted authorities looking to adopt the cat, police said.

Police said they found the feline while searching for evidence after the stolen vehicle collided with a patrol car during an Aug. 10 chase. Officers were pursuing the vehicle on suspicion that it had been used in armed robberies in several nearby communities hours earlier. After the crash, six suspects fled but were soon arrested.

New Jersey Officials Seek 'Flying' Suspect Following Wild Power Outage

SAYREVILLE, N.J. (AP) — A power outage that cut electricity to a New Jersey community a week ago was due to an unlikely culprit — a fish that was apparently dropped by a bird and landed on a transformer, officials said.

Sayreville police said Jersey Central Power and Light Company workers working on the Aug. 12 outage that cut power to a large area of Lower Sayreville found a fish on the transformer in the New Jersey community southwest of New York’s Staten Island.

“We are guessing a bird dropped it as it flew over,” police said on their Facebook page. In a later post, they had a bit of fun, asking readers to remember the fish as “the victim in this senseless death,” dubbing him “Gilligan” and calling him “a hard working family man” and “a father to thousands.”

The suspect, they said, “was last seen flying south” — and readers were urged not to try to apprehend him because “although he isn’t believed to be armed he may still be very dangerous.”

Jersey Central Power and Light Company spokesperson Chris Hoenig said animals — usually squirrels — are a common cause of power outages but “fish are not on the list of frequent offenders.” He said an osprey was probably to blame for the outage that affected about 2,100 Sayreville customers for less than two hours.

Hoenig said the Sayreville area has a large presence of ospreys, which were on the state’s endangered species list until less than a decade ago. The company has a very active osprey and raptor protection program that includes surveys and monitoring of nests and relocating nests that are on their equipment or too close to power lines, he said.

Hoenig told CNN the company appreciates the patience of customers during the outage — but also has sympathy for the suspected avian that lost its lunch.

“If you’ve ever dropped your ice cream cone at the fair, you know the feeling,” he said.
