Helsinki Deputy Mayor Caught Spray-Painting Graffiti In Railway Tunnel

HELSINKI (AP) — The deputy mayor of Finland’s capital is facing possible legal action, and calls for him to pay compensation for damages and to resign, after he was caught red-handed spray-painting graffiti in a railway tunnel last weekend.

The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency told public broadcaster YLE on Wednesday that cleaning up graffiti illegally painted by Paavo Arhinmäki, one of the four deputy mayors of Helsinki, cost the city around 3,500 euros ($3,830).

Arhinmäki, 46, and a friend were caught by guards in a rail tunnel in eastern Helsinki on Friday just after they had completed graffiti, which Finnish street art experts said looked partly inspired by works seen in New York City in the 1970s.

Finland’s largest newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat, published a photo of the large-scale graffiti in a tweet.

In a Facebook posting on Sunday, Arhinmäki, who is known as a strong supporter of street art and as a creator of graffiti in his youth, apologized for his “stupid fooling around.” He is a former lawmaker and chairman of the Left Alliance, and served as a minister for culture and sports in 2011-2014.

Police are investigating the act as vandalism and interference with rail traffic, which had to be temporarily halted because of the incident. The rail tunnel is used by cargo trains running to and from a Helsinki port.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether Arhinmäki would face legal charges.

“I have committed a crime and bear full responsibility for it,” Arhinmäki told YLE on Monday, but has refused to resign from his post and the Helsinki City Council where his Left Alliance party is backing him.

The case has caused uproar and debate among Helsinki citizens in social media with a majority condemning — but some also fiercely supporting — the actions of the deputy mayor who is in charge of culture and leisure affairs in Helsinki, a city of 650,000 inhabitants.

The Finnish capital spends an estimated 650,000 euros ($710,000) annually to remove illegal graffiti throughout the city, and is currently seeking to establish additional sanctioned sites for street art.

Bear Clings To Colorado Home's Window, Grabs A Treat Inside During Surprise Visit

A bear tried to use an alternate exit ― an upper-floor window ― after it made its way inside a Colorado house during an unannounced visit caught on tape earlier this month.

The video shows the bear hanging out of the window before going back inside the Steamboat Springs home. It eventually left through a window on the bottom floor, the same place it entered the house, according to Colorado’s Steamboat Radio.

Homeowner Ryan MacFarlane told Fox 31 that he was not there at the time.

“He got his nails in there and just ripped that window right open and got inside and helped himself to my pork chops I had out for dinner that night, got some snacks out of the pantry and knocked over the plants — nothing too crazy,” said MacFarlane.

The bear got locked in a bedroom, and a police officer went inside to open a door and give the animal a way out, MacFarlane said.

“I was definitely anxious to get there, and the thought was going through my mind that there were going to be thousands and thousands of dollars in damage. And that wasn’t the case this time. Grateful that he was a respectful house guest,” said MacFarlane.

The bear had been involved in at least three break-ins at homes, including attempts to enter one home on multiple occasions, according to Kris Middledorf of Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

The bear seen in the video was later trapped by wildlife crews and then euthanized, CBS News Colorado reported.

Bear encounters are not uncommon in the area.

Video captured last month showed two cubs stopping by a home in Steamboat Springs. One cub attempted to open a door before a person inside made noise to distract it.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesperson Rachael Gonzales told Fox 31 that bears are “opportunistic” and recommended steps to avoid encounters.

“Starting those practices now, locking up your trash, closing windows and doors — again, doing our part to not teach bears bad habits, because once they learn bad habits, they’re going to keep doing that bad habit,” Gonzales said.

Firefighters Rescue Dog Stuck Behind Toilet

A team of Texas firefighters got a little dog out of a tight spot on Monday.

“A small dog had managed to wedge himself behind a toilet,” read a Facebook post from the Woodlands Fire Department. “Firefighters found that ‘Tippy’ was well and truly stuck.”

Photos show the tiny canine with his head sticking out from behind one side of the toilet and his body sticking out the other. Ultimately, freeing the pup necessitated removing some of the wall’s Sheetrock.

Fire Chief Palmer Buck told People that Tippy’s owner suspected the dog had jammed himself in there in an effort to find a cool spot amid the state’s record-breaking heat wave.

After being rescued from his harrowing ordeal, the department wrote that Tippy “was last seen dozing comfortably in a much less precarious place.”

Loose Pig Squeaks Past Police With Hog-Wild Moves In Pennsylvania

A speedy potbelly pig on the run caused mayhem in a Pennsylvania community as he dodged captors for days last week.

The 200-pound pig ran loose in the streets, nearly got hit by a Tesla and outran Manheim Township police officers, who said they’re “fairly certain he’s the fastest pig alive.”

The pig, named Hamilton for the Hamilton Park neighborhood in Lancaster Township where he was first reported, eventually was caught snoozing under a backyard trampoline and was herded into a dog crate. Then he was hauled off to an animal sanctuary for a happy ending.

Nobody knows where he came from, police said.

After the first fruitless attempts to collar the pig, a retired officer suggested seeking help from the Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, which shared footage of the pig darting around a yard.

But even the livestock experts were daunted.

“A foot pursuit of the escaped swine ensued, and yes, we see the irony in 3 cops chasing a pig,” the police department said. “As it turns out, Hamilton wasn’t as tired as we thought because we’re fairly certain he’s the fastest pig alive.”

Once caught, Hamilton went to the sanctuary’s farm, where police said he “will live out his days, telling stories to the other rescued farm animals about how he was saved from his ‘life on the streets,’”

Hamilton, renamed Gregory by the sanctuary, is set to be neutered and treated for parasites, according to Pennsylvania’s CBS 21. He’ll join four other potbelly pigs at the farm, Fox 43 reported.

Police Hunt Down Dinosaur Following South Dakota Heist

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Police have hunted down a velociraptor that was stolen from outside a South Dakota arts and science center.

Sioux Falls police Sgt. Aaron Benson said Friday that a security officer spotted three people carrying the statue away from the Washington Pavilion and called police just after midnight. Surveillance video then helped officers track the statue to a nearby apartment, The Argus Leader reports.

“When opening the door, detectives could clearly see the velociraptor was sitting right inside,” Benson said.

Police detained the three suspects on charges of grand theft. Benson said one was 18, another 19 and the third a juvenile.

“Fortunately, the statue was not damaged,” stated Madelyn Grogan, the Pavilion’s director of education, programming and exhibits, in an email Friday.

The statue and many other dinosaur representations are part of the “Dinosaurs in the Wild” exhibition at the Washington Pavilion’s science center. The organization did not provide any information on the size or weight of the statue. Scientists believe velociraptors grew to about 6 feet (1.8 meters) long and weighed about 100 pounds (45 kilograms) when they roamed the earth millions of years ago.

Grogan said officials are evaluating how they can better secure the dinosaur statue. It was one of two velociraptors featured outside as part of the collection of dinosaur statues; one was perched on the roof of the building, looking out at the city, and the other was almost directly below.

Surgeons Remove World's Largest Kidney Stone From Retired Soldier

When 62-year-old Canistus Coonghe went in for surgery on June 1, he probably didn’t think he’d come out a Guinness World Record holder.

But the retired Sri Lanka Army soldier is in the record books after military surgeons removed what has been declared the world’s largest and heaviest kidney stone.

The grapefruit-sized growth measures about 5.26 inches long ― which Guinness World Records notes was bigger than Coonghe’s 4.6-inch kidney. The stone weighed 1.76 pounds, easily surpassing the previous record for the heaviest ever found, according to Guinness.

Dr. Kugadas Sutharshan removed the stone from Coonghe through an incision in his kidney’s pelvis, a procedure called open pyelolithotomy, according to USA Today.

Despite the obvious obstruction, doctors said Coonghe’s kidney was functioning normally. Although his liver, gallbladder, pancreas and spleen were also normally sized, his prostate was enlarged.

Coonghe is still recovering from the surgery, but is doing well, according to Guinness.

An X-ray of the stone pre-surgery shows just how big it was in Coonghe’s body.

And this is how it looked after surgery.

The previous largest kidney stone was a 5.11-inch growth removed from Vilas Ghuge of India in 2004. The previous record holder for heaviest stone belonged to Pakistan’s Wazir Muhammad, whose 1.36-pound growth was taken out in 2008.

Kidney stones are typically formed when minerals and salts crystallize into hard deposits. The stones are sometimes caused by chronic dehydration and certain medical conditions, such as gout and inflammatory bowel disease, and can cause a great deal of pain.

Most are eliminated through urination. Others require shock wave therapy or surgery.

Bus 666 No Longer Goes To Hel, Poland, After Protest From Christian Conservatives

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — There will be no more going to Hel on bus 666.

The bus to the town of Hel on Poland’s Baltic coast has long been popular with tourists. But some Christian conservatives have protested the number signifying the devil on a bus leading to a place that sounds like the word “hell” in English.

The local bus operator, PKS Gdynia, announced this week that bus 666 will no longer run to Hel. It said it had flipped the last number and would now run the line under the number 669 starting on June 24.

Local media said the bus company acted under the pressure of Christian groups who had pushed for the change, but were already thinking of returning to the old number amid a public outcry over the change.

The local news portal Trojmiasto.pl said that the line operated under the number 666 since 2006, first as a local joke before attracting riders from across Poland and beyond. Some people rode the bus simply to say they had taken the 666 bus to Hel, Polish media reported.

Fronda, a Catholic publication, has for years called for the 666 bus to be renamed, arguing that it had Satanic overtones and that “to present the reality of eternal damnation as amusing in any way is just plain stupidity.”

It lamented that fact that many Polish journalists, even Catholic ones, took pleasure in the joke.

Video Shows Police Investigating 911 Call About UFO, 'Not Human' Creatures

Las Vegas police last month investigated a 911 call about a mysterious object falling from the sky and tall, “not human” creatures walking around a family’s backyard, according to video and police reports obtained by local news outlets.

Police body camera footage released last week shows the officers speaking with seemingly rattled residents just after midnight on May 1 following their 911 call.

One of the unidentified men told the dispatcher that he was in his yard with his father and brother working on their truck when they saw something bright fall from the sky. They then felt a big impact and heard a lot of footsteps nearby.

“And then, we have, like, big- a big equipment, and we see there’s a, there’s like an 8-foot person beside it and another one’s inside, and it has big eyes and it’s looking at us,” the caller tells the 911 dispatcher, according to ABC News. “They’re very large. They’re like 8-foot, 9-foot, 10-foot.”

The man insists to the dispatcher that what he saw was not human.

“One hundred percent, they’re not human,” he said.

One of the Las Vegas Metro police officers responding to the scene expressed skepticism to the concerned residents, body camera footage shows. He said he was taking it seriously, however, because his partner said they saw something fall from the sky too.

Police body camera footage around 11:50 p.m. did capture a bright, glowing object falling from the sky in the area prior to the 911 call, according to 8 News Now.

There were a number of fireball sightings in the area around this time, according to the American Meteor Society.

“It was like a big creature,” one of the men tells an officer before guiding him to their backyard in the video. “I don’t believe in it, but what I saw, I do believe in it.”

The video is blacked out after the officers enter the backyard. Police said this was done due to privacy laws.

The officers searched the property but did not report finding anything unusual. The case was closed a few days later.

Las Vegas Metro police did not respond to a request for comment Monday.

British Man Climbs To 72nd Floor Of Seoul Skyscraper With Just His Bare Hands

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A British man was detained after climbing more than half way up the world’s fifth-tallest skyscraper in Seoul with only his bare hands on Monday, authorities said.

More than 90 emergency, police and other personnel were dispatched to the 123-story, 555-meter (1,820-foot) -tall Lotte World Tower, after the man was spotted scaling the building on Monday morning, the Seoul fire agency said in a statement.

The man, in his 20s, reached the 72nd floor, which is about 310 meters (1,020 feet) high, before officials took him to a gondola lift and moved him inside the building, the statement said.

South Korean media identified the man as free climber George King-Thompson. The reports said he was carrying a parachute and told police that he wanted to BASE-jump from the top of the building.

Fire and police authorities didn’t immediately confirm the man’s name or his motive.

King-Thompson was arrested in 2019 after scaling the Shard in London — the U.K.’s tallest skyscraper at 310 meters (1,017 feet) — after the owners of the building pressed charges against him for trespassing. He was sentenced to six months in prison and served three.

In 2021, he climbed the 36-story Stratosphere Tower, a residential block in east London’s Stratford neighborhood and reached the top in less than half an hour. He said he picked the building because he was shocked by the flash floods that recently hit the area and wanted to raise awareness to the seriousness of climate change.

Police confirmed they took custody of the man but didn’t provide further details.

The Lotte Property & Development, which operates the tower, said the man didn’t suffer any major injuries. The fire agency statement said he suffered a cut on his skin on the right knee.

In 2018, French climber Alain Robert, known as “Spiderman” for his daring stunt, was also detained after climbing the 75th floor of the Lotte World Tower. Lotte officials said they heard he was eventually released and left South Korea after they told police they didn’t want to press charges for obstruction or trespassing.

The Lotte Property & Development said company officials were expected to discuss what to do with the British man.

Louisiana Pooch Sets Guinness World Record For Largest Tongue On Living Dog

When it comes to long doggy tongues, a Labrador/German shepherd mix is licking all comers.

Zoey, a 3-year-old canine from Metairie, Louisiana, has just been declared the living dog with the world’s largest tongue by Guinness World Records.

For the record ― both literally and figuratively ― Zoey’s tongue measures a whopping 5 inches long ― longer than a 12-ounce can of soda.

Zoey was only 6 weeks old when she was adopted by Sadie and Drew Williams, but her tongue was titanic even back then. Sadie said Zoey’s tongue was sticking out of her mouth in their very first picture.

Drew said that the length of Zoey’s tongue was most apparent after she had been playing outside and was “slobbering all over the place.”

A vet measured Zoey’s tongue last year, and after the dimensions were submitted to Guinness World Records, her tongue was officially recognized as the largest on a living dog.

In the process, Zoey beat out the previous living record holder, Bisbee, an English setter from Tucson, Arizona, who was awarded the title earlier this year.

However, both Zoey and Bisbee will have to grow their tongues out a lot more if they want to claim the all-time record, previously held by Mochi, a St. Bernard in South Dakota.

Mochi’s tongue measured a whopping 7.3 inches before she died in October 2021 at the age of 12.

'Very Serious Journalist' Suffers Absolutely Cringe On-Air Moment

A radio show host seemed taken aback after a White House correspondent left him an awkward “I love you” message at the end of an appearance on Thursday.

RealClearPolitics’ Philip Wegmann, while signing off from Chris Stigall’s show on the Washington-based station WMAL, uttered the phrase after the host addressed his report on Mike Pence’s presidential campaign launch.

“Thank you, Phil, very much. Great to catch up,” Stigall said.

“I love you. Thank you,” Wegmann responded.

The “I love you” seemingly caught the host off guard, as he questioned whether he heard the reporter correctly.

“Did I just hear Philip say he loved me? Did he think he was talking to his wife for a minute?” Stigall asked.

“I’ve never had a guest actually say that in closing. ‘I love you.’ Sorry, Phil. I’m married. This is very uncomfortable.”

Wegmann later explained on Twitter that he was texting with his mother and slipped up blurting “love you too” aloud as his interview came to a close.

“I am a very serious journalist,” Wegmann wrote.

Stigall, later in his show, burst out laughing before he informed listeners of the explanation.

“He texted an expletive and then said ‘I was reading a text from my mother,’” said Stigall as he continued to chuckle.

“It’s alright, Phil, I am a married man, but I love you, too.”

California Family Finds 1 Million Pennies While Cleaning Out Old Home

When California real estate agent John Reyes went to Los Angeles to clean out the former home of his father-in-law, he expected to find some trash.

Instead he found some cash: more than 1 million copper pennies, to be specific.

Reyes, a real estate agent in Ontario, California, found the massive amount of moolah ― worth at least $10,000 ― last year in a crawlspace under a home that once belonged to his father-in-law, Fritz, who’d lived there with his brother for decades.

Reyes, his wife, Elizabeth, and other family members have spent the last few years cleaning out the home in hopes of renovating it.

But it was a daunting task for one simple reason. “They kept everything,” Reyes told Los Angeles TV station KTLA.

Reyes said the crawlspace was so tight that family members had to get on their knees to reach some of the corners.

“We were trying to do a thorough job,” Reyes said, and, as a result, started finding a bunch of loose pennies before discovering boxes and bank bags filled with pennies made before the U.S. switched from copper to zinc in the 1980s.

After weighing the bags and determining the approximate amount in each bag, the family figured there were at least 1 million pennies in the crawlspace.

But the answer to that question brought up another question: What to do with all the pennies?

Reyes figured they’d take the coins to a Coinstar machine, but that idea was quickly nixed.

“We didn’t want to pay 8%, and there’s no way we can take these all the way [home] to Ontario,” he said.

They tried to exchange the pennies at a nearby Wells Fargo, which didn’t have enough space. Reyes and family then transported the pennies in two trucks to a bank closer to their home only to have that bank refuse to take them as well.

But after bank employees suggested combing through the pennies in search of particularly rare coins, the family decided to put the whole copper kit-and-kaboodle on OfferUp for $25,000 ― which is admittedly more than the face value of the pennies.

“We want to sell them but what we know is there’s this craze on the internet of people looking for a million dollar penny,” Reyes told The Sacramento Bee. “We just want to sell them to someone who knows they could sell them for more than penny value.”

Since OfferUp is set up as a bunch of local sites, Reyes is asking anyone else who may be interested in the pennies to message him via his Instagram page.

However, as KTLA notes at the bottom of its article: You’ll have to figure out how to transport the pennies yourself.
