Biting, Clawing, Attacking Monkeys Terrorize Japanese City

Snow monkey bathing in hot spring.Jeremy Woodhouse via Getty ImagesTOKYO (AP) — People in a southwestern Japanese city have come under attack from monkeys that are trying to snatch babies, biting and clawing at flesh, and sneaking into nursery schools. The attacks — on 58 people since July 8 — are getting so bad Yamaguchi city hall hired a special unit to hunt the animals with tranquilizer guns

The monkeys aren’t interested in food, so traps haven’t worked. They have targeted mostly children and the elderly.“They are so smart, and they tend to sneak up and attack from behind, often grabbing at your legs,” city official Masato Saito said Wednesday.Japanese macaque in Joshin-etsu National Park, Honshu, Japan.Peter Adams via Getty ImagesWhen confronted by a monkey, the instructions are: Do not look them in the eye, make yourself look as big as possible, such as by spreading open your coat, then back away as quietly as possible without making sudden moves, according to Saito

A woman was assaulted by a monkey while hanging laundry on her veranda. Another victim showed bandaged toes. They were taken aback and frightened by how big and fat the monkeys were. The monkeys terrorizing the community are Japanese macaque, the kind often pictured peacefully bathing in hot springs.Close-up Of aggressive Japanese macaque.Dirk Zabinsky / EyeEm via Getty ImagesOne male monkey, measuring 49 centimeters (1.6 foot) in height and weighing 7 kilograms (15 pounds), was caught Tuesday by the team with the tranquilizer gun. It was judged by various evidence to be one of the attacking monkeys and put to death. But more attacks were reported after the capture. No one has been seriously injured so far. But all have been advised to get hospital treatment. Ambulances were called in some cases

Although Japan is industrialized and urban, a fair portion of land in the archipelago is mountains and forests. Rare attacks on people by a bear, boars or other wildlife have occurred, but generally not by monkeys. No one seems to know why the attacks have occurred, and where exactly the troop of monkeys came from remains unclear.“I have never seen anything like this my entire life,” Saito said.Related...How World's Top Chefs Are Fighting Food WasteI Never Got To Date As A Teen Girl. Missouri Businesses Battle It Out With Clever Use Of Signs

A McDonald's restaurant in Marshfield, Missouri, sparked a "sign war" after sending a message to a nearby Dairy Queen earlier this month.Marshfield Area Chamber of CommerceA Missouri community is battling itself after a McDonald’s restaurant sparked a now-viral “sign war” with area businesses. The war of the words started earlier this month when the fast-food chain’s Marshfield, Missouri, store wrote the message “Hey DQ! Wanna have a sign war” to a local Dairy Queen, the Springfield News-Leader reported

Dairy Queen employees decided to fire back with a sign of its own and poked fun at the chain’s ice cream machine woes: “We wld but were 2 busy makin icecream.”McDonald’s replied, “That’s cute. Our icecream makes itself.”But what started as a back-and-forth between two fast-food restaurants resulted in dozens of businesses wittily engaging in the fun, the newspaper reported.“Just CHECKING in on the sign war...” Arvest Bank wrote on its sign.“Sign war? Y’all can’t handle the SMOKE!” Hucklebuck Bar-B-Que wrote.“Your signs are cheesy just like our pizza!” a local Domino’s wrote. The brand marketing director of Hamra Enterprises, which manages a Wendy’s restaurant that participated in the sign war, said she was “in” for the location to participate in the message feud.“If you read the comments (about the ‘sign wars’), the general consensus is it brings a smile to people’s face,” Hamra’s Eve Metheny told the Springfield News-Leader. Neighbors Freaked By Creepy Chucky Doll Discover Real-Life 'Child's Play'

Residents of Pinson, Alabama, did not want to play with a Chucky doll roaming their streets during the day.Kendra Walden spotted the figure resembling the evil protagonist from the 1980s “Child’s Play” horror movies and posted alarming pictures on Facebook. The diminutive look-alike prowled the neighborhood in overalls and a striped shirt, with long red hair very much like the movie villain. “I almost had a heart attack,” Walden wrote

Some Facebook users tagged parents, joking that their children were terrorizing neighbors. Others were spooked. The doll, however, turned out to be a 5-year-old kid named Jackson who likes to wear old Halloween costumes, WIAT-TV reported.Jackson’s mom, Britnee Reed, said her son “loves to make people laugh.”“That’s just kind of how his personality is,” said Reed, whose mother was watching Jackson while she was at work during the Chucky incident.Predictably, the social media scare went viral, with Reed’s family taking a star turn. Jackson’s brother said he thought it was “amazing” that his brother’s costume got so much attention. And Reed said the stunt might make it to the next level. “We actually got a message from people asking for him to be at their kid’s birthday party,” Reed said. Largest Big Pink Diamond In 300 Years Discovered In Angola

A big pink diamond of 170 carats has been discovered in Angola and is claimed to be the largest such gemstone found in 300 years. (Lucapa Diamond Company via AP)via Associated PressJOHANNESBURG (AP) — A big pink diamond of 170 carats has been discovered in Angola and is claimed to be the largest such gemstone found in 300 years.Called the “Lulo Rose,” the diamond was found at the Lulo alluvial diamond mine, the mine’s owner, the Lucapa Diamond Company, announced Wednesday on its website

“Only one in 10,000 diamonds is colored pink. So you’re certainly looking at a very rare article when you find a very large pink diamond,” Lucapa CEO Stephen Wetherall told The Associated Press. The pink gemstone is expected to fetch a high value when auctioned, but Wetherall said he doesn’t know what kind of premium will be paid because of its color.Lulo is an alluvial mine which means the stones are recovered from a river bed. The Lucapa company is searching for the underground deposits, known as kimberlite pipes, which would be the main source of the diamonds, said Wetherall, speaking from the company’s headquarters in Australia.“We’re looking for the kimberlite pipes that brought these diamonds to the surface,” Wetherall said. “When you find these high-value large diamonds ... it certainly elevates the excitement from our perspective in our hunt for the primary source.”Advertisement About 400 staff are employed at the Lulo mine which has already produced the two largest diamonds ever found in Angola, including a 404-carat clear diamond, he said. The pink gemstone is the fifth largest diamond found at the mine where 27 diamonds of 100 carats or more have been found, according to Lucapa. The pink diamond will be sold by international tender by the Angolan state diamond marketing company, Sodiam. Angola’s mines make it one of the world’s top 10 producers of diamonds.“This record and spectacular pink diamond recovered from Lulo continues to showcase Angola as an important player on the world stage for diamond mining and demonstrates the potential and rewards for commitment and investment in our growing diamond mining industry,” Diamantino Azevedo, Angola’s Minister of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas said, according to the Lucapa website. The pink diamond is an impressive size but many clear diamonds are larger than 1,000 carats. The Cullinan diamond found in South Africa in 1905 tips the scales at 3,106 carats and it’s in the British Sovereign’s Scepter

The burglar had to double back to the scene of the crime, the corporate office of a the San Francisco Bay Area doughnut company – this week because he forgot his keys. Police are asking for the public's help in identification. (San Rafael Police Department via AP)via Associated PressSAN RAFAEL, Calif. (AP) — A Northern California burglar returned to the scene of the crime this weekend after he forgot his keys inside a doughnut company’s corporate office. The thief stole some petty cash from Johnny Doughnuts’ office in the San Francisco Bay Area on Saturday night, police said. In another twist, he also grabbed the keys to a bakery vehicle, but didn’t steal the vehicle itself

San Rafael police are seeking the public’s help to identify the burglar, who used an unknown tool to “manipulate” the office’s doorknob and get inside around 10 p.m., according to Lt. Dan Fink. The crime was reported to police on Monday.Surveillance video shows the man moving between the office and a back storage area, where he pried open a filing cabinet, Fink said. The lieutenant said the thief took a bank bag with an unknown amount of cash.“Part of the investigating is finding out why this specific business was targeted,” he said.Craig Blum, founder of Johnny Doughnuts, said his company plans to deliver a few dozen doughnuts to the San Rafael police officers “who came to our aid to ensure that we can continue serving our community hand-crafted doughnuts without interruption.”“It was an unfortunate incident, but we’re glad no doughnuts or team members were harmed,” Blum said. “Sometimes even the thought of a doughnut makes you do crazy things.”Advertisement Related...Stephen Colbert Gives Sen. British Cinema Chain Offers Redheads Free Tickets During Heat Wave

Britain experienced the hottest day on record with 104.4-degree temperatures Tuesday.Dominic Lipinski - PA Images via Getty ImagesThere’s no place like an air-conditioned movie theater on a hot summer day. That’s precisely what Showcase Cinemas in the United Kingdom thought when the theater chain offered redheads free admission to escape the current heat wave, according to The Washington Post. The company publicized its unconventional promotion Friday on Instagram.“Free tickets for redheads on the hottest days ever,” the caption read. While certainly cheeky and unorthodox, the promotion couldn’t have come at a better time. Temperatures have soared to dangerous levels across Europe this week. Hundreds of people in France, Spain, Britain and Portugal have already died from heat-related causes

Britain recorded its hottest day in history Tuesday with staggering temperatures up to 104.4 degrees Fahrenheit, according to CNBC. Firefighters already responded to several fires across London Tuesday, and the Met Office, the U.K.’s weather service, issued a red extreme heat warning and urged people to stay indoors. While sun exposure and dehydration are certainly dangerous for everyone, studies have previously shown that people with fair skin and red hair are more at risk of developing skin cancer. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Showcase Cinemas UK (@showcasecinemasuk) “Since redheads are often more vulnerable than most to the sun’s rays, we’re giving them shelter from the sun inside our fully air conditioned cinema screens,” the theater company told The Washington Post in a statement. Advertisement Inflation in Britain reached a 40-year high at 9.1% recently, which only sweetened the prospect of free movie tickets. While some decried the promotion as “offensive” on social media, others gleefully tagged their partners in the comment section of the post to nudge them into a movie date. “I am constantly joking how I, as a ginger, cannot stand summer because of the heat, so when I saw Showcase was offering free tickets for redheads during the current heat wave I immediately shared it with my friends and boyfriend,” wrote Sarah Jackson, a social media influencer. As Britain continues to weather the heat wave, runways at both London’s Luton Airport and RAF Brize Norton in Oxford were temporarily closed, as the sweltering tarmacs became too hot for safe arrivals and departures.Experts have pointed to man-made climate change as the cause for the heat wave, and have called on officials to create better infrastructure to deal with it in the future. In the meantime, taking brief respite inside of a dark, air-conditioned auditorium ultimately appears to be a wise choice for anyone in the region — even if only redheads get in for free.Related...Thousands Of Cattle Killed By Brutal Heat, Humidity In KansasExtreme Heat Could Kill Nearly 60,000 Americans Yearly By 2050: ReportU.N. Lawsuit Says Bass Pro Won't Honor Lifetime Warranty On Socks

A sad pair of socks.Christoph Hetzmannseder via Getty ImagesSPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri man says in a class-action lawsuit against Bass Pro that the outdoor outfitter is refusing to honor its lifetime warranty on socks.Kent Slaughter of Springfield said that after years of exchanging his “Redhead Lifetime Guarantee All-Purpose Wool Socks” every time they wore out, the Springfield-based company changed its policy in 2021 before he tried to return four pairs of socks. Instead of getting another pair with a lifetime warranty, Slaughter said he was given socks that only carried a 60-day warranty, according to the Springfield News-Leader

A Bass Pro representative said the company won’t comment on pending litigation. The lawsuit said Bass Pro is misrepresenting the socks in its ads because it says they are “The last sock you’ll ever need to buy” because of the lifetime warranty.Slaughter said in the lawsuit that the warranty was a major factor in his decision to buy the socks.Related...Johnny Depp Settles Lawsuit With Crew Member Who Said Actor Punched HimVideo Shows Security Tackling Black Man They Allegedly Thought Was Stealing CarsBus Driver Who Allegedly Drank On Field Trip Is Arrested After Liquor Store Trip

You Gotta Be Kitten Me: Cat Cashes In 1 Of His 9 Lives In ATM Rescue

Arkansas firefighters saved a kitten who was trapped in an ATM earlier this month. On July 7, the Fort Smith Fire Department responded to a call about a kitten stuck in a Regions Bank ATM, KFSM-TV reported. First responders opened the machine and later took the “dehydrated, hungry” kitten to Fort Smith Animal Haven.Facebook users showed their gratitude to the firefighters and joked about how the kitten wound up in such a bizarre situation

“Wait, I can get cats out of an atm? what button do i push for that?” Facebook user John Aary asked.“Why was the cat not arrested for attempted bank robbery? Fort Smith Police Department care to chime in here? Is the cat related to Pawciffer Fuzz and used his pull to get out of a charge?” Facebook user Wesley Rester asked. The kitten, a male gray tabby, has since received a name fitting for his unlikely adventures in the financial world: Cash.Ashley Deane, a vet tech with the shelter, described Cash as “a little spicy” from the ordeal. He weighs less than 1 lb., according to KFSM-TV, but is on his way to recovery.“Generally, after a couple of days with our handlers caring for them, they become less spicy and just a little bit mild so they can come a little bit more workable,” Deane said

The shelter hopes to build up Cash’s weight, give him required vaccinations and foster him before adoption.Related...Walmart Employee Takes Home Kitten She Found Inside Vending Machine'I Owe Her My Life': Dog On The Mend After Rescuing Owner From Mountain Lion'Most Responsible Kitten In The World' Found Watching Over Orphaned LitterRelated...I Got Laid Off At 51. Man Accused Of Killing Friend Claims It Was To Stop Him From Summoning Sasquatch

An Oklahoma noodler was arrested and reportedly confessed to killing his fishing partner, claiming he did so to stop Bigfoot from coming to eat him. Larry Doil Sanders, 53, had been noodling ― a way of catching catfish via hand ― with friend Jimmy Knighten, also 53, along the South Canadian River in Pontotoc County on Saturday, according to KTEN. Advertisement “Larry claimed that while at the river, he discovered Jimmy intended to feed him to Sasquatch/Bigfoot,” an affidavit cited by NBC News said. “Larry indicated Jimmy attempted to get away from him so that the Sasquatch could eat Larry.” The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations told KFOR that Sanders thought Knighten “basically tricked him into being out there” and that the two fought for an hour. Sanders allegedly choked Knighten to death near the river, then went home and confessed to his daughter, who is dating Knighten’s son. “He appeared to be under the influence of something,” Sheriff John Christian told KTEN. “His statement was that Mr. Knighten had summoned ‘Bigfoot’ to come and kill him; that’s why he had to kill Mr. Knighten.”Advertisement The Oklahoman reported that Sanders had outstanding warrants from two drug-related cases. In 2019, he was placed on probation for 5 years for bringing meth into the jail after being arrested for public intoxication.KXII reported that Sanders is now facing a charge of first-degree murder. EEK!: Reptile Sightings Spook Michigan College Town, Cause Nature Center To Shut

In response, the college posted a warning on Facebook, asking people to stay away from the nature center and be aware around bodies of water

Lina Kelly, director of Michigan’s Critchlow Alligator Sanctuary, told WILX-TV that alligators aren’t subject to “harsh” Michigan weather conditions and if it’s not caught by October the “poor animal will just die.”Kelly also said that there were not many alligators in Michigan, even though owning an alligator as a pet is legal.“If you have an alligator as a pet, there are places that you can take it to rather than just dumping it off into a local lake and pond and making it someone else’s problem,” Kelly said. The alligator wasn’t the first big reptile spotted in Michigan this year. American Tourist Miraculously Survives Fall Into Mount Vesuvius

Philip Carroll escaped with mere scratches and cuts to his arms and back.DEA / S. AMANTINI via Getty ImagesA 23-year-old tourist from Maryland survived a fall into the Mount Vesuvius crater in Campania, Italy, on Saturday. The incident occurred after Philip Carroll and two of his relatives wandered off-trail for a chance to take better photos

Paolo Cappelli, president of the Presidio Permanente Vesuvio base on the summit of the 4,000-foot volcano, told NBC News they forged ahead despite warnings. “This family took another trail, closed to tourists, even if there was a small gate and ‘no access’ signs,” said Cappelli. On top of neglecting to follow guidelines and scale the volcano with proper safety precautions, Carroll and his relatives didn’t even pay for tickets, which are required to limit the number of hikers on the trail. They took a prohibited path after departing the nearby town of Ottaviano. When they got to the top, Carroll tried taking a selfie — and dropped his phone into the crater.“He tried to recover it, but slipped and slid a few meters into the crater,” said Cappelli. “He managed to stop his fall, but at that point, he was stuck. He was very lucky. If he kept going, he would have plunged 300 meters into the crater.”Advertisement Carroll was rescued by local guides who rappelled into the crater and pulled him to safety with a rope.Sebastian Condrea via Getty ImagesMount Vesuvius famously erupted in 79 A.D. and left the nearby city of Pompeii covered in 23 feet of ash and debris, according to CNN. While the volcano is still active and the last eruption occurred in 1944, it’s currently in repose and unlikely to erupt anytime soon.Mount Vesuvius is nonetheless still considered one of the world’s most dangerous volcanoes due to its physical proximity to major towns like Naples, according to The Guardian. A popular tourist destination, the crater is nearly 1,000 feet deep and 1,500 feet wide.Carroll was rescued by local guides who rappelled into the crater and pulled him to safety with a rope. He suffered minor injuries including cuts and bruises on his arms and back. The legal ramifications, however, might prove more detrimental. Carroll and his relatives now face criminal charges for invading public land

An Invasive Creature Is Taking Over A Florida Community

An invasive species of snails is leaving its trail in the area of New Port Richey, Florida.Officials have captured over 1,000 giant African land snails in the community since June 23, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services officials said in a press conference. The snails are known to grow as long as 8 inches, feed on over 500 plant varieties and can carry the rat lungworm parasite that can cause meningitis in humans, officials said in an accompanying press release. They’re also illegal to own or import in the U.S. without a permit.Florida officials announced they’ve enacted a quarantine in the New Port Richey area and are using snail bait to treat properties

The snails, introduced to the continental U.S. in 1966, have been an issue for Florida officials in the past.Florida spent seven years and over $1 million eradicating the snails after three of the creatures were “smuggled” into Miami in 1966, according to Newsweek. They appeared in the Miami area again in 2011, leading the state to spend over $24 million on research and efforts to find over 168,000 of the snails, Newsweek reported last year.Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried announced the species’ second eradication — declared after the animal wasn’t seen in at least three years — from the state in October 2021

Fried, in a statement on Thursday, assured Floridians that the snails will be eradicated once again.“We have done it twice before, and we will do it again — it is not a question of if, but when,” Fried said.“Together, let’s locate, communicate, and eradicate, so Florida can again be [giant African land snail] free.”Related...This Senior Pooch Has Been Crowned 'World's Ugliest Dog'NASA Wants Its Moon Dust And Cockroaches Back -- Now!Happy The Bronx Zoo Elephant Is Not A 'Person,' Court RulesRelated...Scientists Discover Dinosaur Species With Little ArmsTexas Homeowners Face Lawsuit After Feeding DucksUtah's Great Salt Lake 'In Trouble' After Levels Fall To Historic New Low

Florida Man Pulls No Punches In Brutal Obituary For His Father

Typically, a person is only supposed to say good things of the dead. But in the case of Lawrence Pfaff Sr., the tone of his obituary seems to be “Good thing he’s dead.”The obituary, published in The Florida Times-Union over the holiday weekend, describes the late Pfaff, 81, as “narcissistic” and an “abusive alcoholic” whose death proves that “evil does eventually die.”Advertisement The angry obit was written by Pfaff’s son Larry Pfaff Jr., who didn’t pull any punches: [Pfaff] is survived by his three children, no four. Oops, five children. Well as of 2022 we believe there is one more that we know about, but there could be more. His love was abundant when it came to himself, but for his children it was limited. From a young age, he was a ladies’ man and an abusive alcoholic, solidifying his commitment to both with the path of destruction he left behind, damaging his adult children, and leaving them broken. The obit says that Pfaff spent more than 20 years working for the New York Police Department, but “because of his alcohol addiction, his Commanding Officer took away his gun and badge, replacing them with a broom until he could get his act together.”A spokesperson for the NYPD did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment Wednesday.Pfaff Jr., 58, also writes that his father’s “hobbies” included “abusing his first wife,” and that he “possesses no redeeming qualities for his children, including the ones he knew, and the ‘ones he knew about.’”He told the Times-Union that his dad left the family when he was 9, had several more children with various women, and abandoned them as well

In fact, Pfaff Jr. has only been able to connect with many of his brothers and sisters by doing DNA research.Pfaff Jr. told First Coast News that he actually started writing the obit a year ago, while his father was still alive, as “a way for me to really cleanse myself and let that part of my life go.”He then sat on the piece until his dad died June 27.The Times-Union notes that Larry’s sister Carolyn Compton “grew up in the same household” as him and “confirmed Pfaff’s account of their father.”Pfaff Jr. said people have reached out to thank him for being honest about his deceased parent.“I got a call from somebody in St. Augustine that found me and wanted to thank me for posting that because, you know, they had a similar life, and they wanted to be able to do something similar to help heal,” he said. “They just thanked me for, you know, the honesty.”But the obit isn’t getting much love from Gannett, the company that owns the Times-Union.A company spokesperson told First Coast News that “we regrettably published an obituary that did not adhere to our guidelines and we are looking into the matter further. We regret any distress this may have caused.”Advertisement CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story misstated the outlet to which Pfaff made some of his comments. It was First Coast News, not The Florida Times-Union.Need help? Ice Cream Trucks Return To Colorado Community After 65 Years

Ice cream truck sales are no longer out in the cold in one Colorado city.A 65-year-old ban on ice cream trucks was lifted by the Aurora City Council, KDVR-TV reported. The ban started in 1957 and deemed the trucks a “nuisance,” the news outlet said, as people saw the vehicles as a safety risk for children.Aurora Councilman Dustin Zvonek, part of a city committee meant to examine “outdated” laws, said the ban surprised members of the City Council.“There were five of us on that committee and it was a collective, ‘What?’ And we just couldn’t believe it,” Zvonek said

The councilman would later be the first person to buy from a truck following the ban’s reversal, according to his Twitter.First legal ice cream truck purchase from an Ice Cream truck in the City of Aurora in over 60 years. #copolitics pic.twitter.com/QMqjKwLQkH— Dustin Zvonek (@DustinZvonek) July 1, 2022 Zvonek, in a KUSA-TV story about the ban in April, said he believed the reversal could get money flowing in the Colorado community.“I thought, ‘But ice cream trucks are a small business opportunity, and who doesn’t like ice cream?’” he said. “So it clearly fit into the [committee] and what we were doing.”Advertisement The city awarded Ice Cream Wagon, an ice cream truck company, with Aurora’s “first legal license” to sell the frozen treat, according to KDVR-TV.“It’s a great day for the people of Aurora,” said Paul Capley of ice cream truck company Ice Cream Wagon. The return of ice cream trucks has become a hit in the community with children and teenagers.“It’s refreshing but also fun, because it’s not like you’re eating just like ice, you’re eating like cool-flavored ice,” 14-year-old Zoe Hepola told KDVR-TV.“You just get to have fun, stay cool and stay amazing.”Related...Kangaroo Escapes Captivity Thanks To The Help Of Another AnimalDodgers' Peanut Pitcher Asked To Stop Doing The One Thing He's Known ForChris Pratt Doesn't Go By 'Chris' And We're Shook: 'It's Not My Name'Related...Everyone Should Master Making A Perfect French Omelet. Florida Man Pretended To Be Disney World Staffer To Steal A Famous Character, Police Say

A man allegedly pretended to be a Walt Disney World employee by wearing a name tag, work pants and a work vest to the theme park in May.John Raoux via Associated PressA Florida man who was looking for a security job at Walt Disney World has been accused of stealing a character’s statue from the park in May.David Emerson Proudfoot was arrested and is facing third-degree grand theft charges and obstruction by false information after he allegedly donned a Disney name tag and attempted to steal a “Star Wars” R2-D2 statue worth up to $10,000, Law & Crime reported

A “confused” Proudfoot was allegedly spotted pushing a cart while leaving the Swan and Dolphin Hotel, according to the news outlet. An affidavit said he identified himself with a name of someone who didn’t work for Walt Disney World and eventually said he was moving the statue and a game machine “on the property.”The man said he applied for a Disney World security job, the affidavit said, and wanted to move the items to point out security lapses in hopes of getting a better paying position. He allegedly told police it wasn’t his goal to take the items from Disney World, although a search warrant at his home “revealed thousands of dollars worth of items” from the theme park, Law & Crime reported.Related...Tim Allen Finally Shares His Thoughts On New 'Lightyear' Movie'Hocus Pocus 2' Trailer Will Put A Nostalgia Spell On You: 'We're Back, Witches''Lilo & Stitch' Director Says 'Frozen' Praise Was 'Frustrating' For This One ReasonAdvertisement Related...I Dated My Camp Boyfriend For 3 Summers. Virginia Man's Reason For Police Chase Is Straight Out Of Science Fiction

A driver’s reason for a 40-mile police chase in which speeds sometimes topped 100 mph is straight out of a movie script.Thomas W. Lee, 39, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, pleaded no contest to two dozen charges stemming from a September chase that began in Hempfield, Pennsylvania, The Tribune-Review in western Pennsylvania reported.Lee, who appeared in a Westmoreland County courtroom on Tuesday, said he stole a car for the chase because he was “tired of walking,” the newspaper reported. His explanation, however, didn’t stop there

“I thought I was a time traveler because I was on drugs. I wasn’t trying to hurt anyone,” Lee reportedly said.“I was just trying to save my son.”Officers pursued him on the Pennsylvania Turnpike until he hit a spike strip laid across the highway, according to police. He attempted to run away, but officers hit Lee with a Taser and then took him into custody, the police report said. The charges against Lee included aggravated assault with a vehicle, drunken driving, fleeing police and resisting arrest

He could face up to 10 years in prison.Related...Chris Pratt Doesn't Go By 'Chris' And We're Shook: 'It's Not My Name'Jimmy Kimmel Finds 'Famous' Trump Speech After Former President's MLK ComparisonLady Gaga In Talks To Join 'Joker' Sequel, Which For Some Reason Will Be A MusicalRelated...California Beach Returned To Family Nearly 100 Years After Taken From Black OwnersPaddleboard Duo Rescues Swimmer Attacked By Great White Shark Off California BeachHow Much True Crime TV Is Too Much?

Denver Couple In Awe After Stanley Cup Accidentally Turns Up In Their Driveway

The Stanley Cup trophy mistakenly arrived at a Denver couple's home on Tuesday.Richard T. Nowitz via Getty ImagesMost hockey players will never get a chance to win the prized Stanley Cup trophy. But one Denver, Colorado couple didn’t have to spend a single second on the ice to hold it.Kit Karbler and his husband Dmitri Rudenko were at their home in the city’s Hilltop neighborhood when the trophy was delivered on Tuesday, KDVR-TV reported

At just under 3-feet-tall, the Stanley Cup arrived in a case and was meant for Stanley Cup champion player Gabriel Landeskog. According to Denver news station KUSA, he lives in the neighborhood and his address is similar to the couple’s.Landeskog, the captain of the National Hockey League’s Colorado Avalanche, helped his team clinch the 2022 Stanley Cup Finals against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday.Colorado Avalanche left wing Gabriel Landeskog lifts the Stanley Cup after the team defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 6 of the NHL hockey Stanley Cup Finals on Sunday. Phelan M. Ebenhack via Associated PressThe man who delivered the trophy, Hockey Hall of Fame’s Keeper of the Cup Philip Pritchard, allowed Karbler to lift the trophy just like NHL players do after they win the championship

“I couldn’t believe how heavy it was. I ran my fingers over the engraving,” Karbler told KDVR.The couple had watched the Stanley Cup Finals, KUSA reported, and Rudenko described the Stanley Cup’s appearance in their driveway as similar to “finding a treasure.”“It made our day, and it’s something that we’ll be able to talk about and laugh about for a long time,” Karbler told KUSA.Related...Chris Pratt Doesn't Go By 'Chris' And We're Shook: 'It's Not My Name'Stephen Colbert Names The 'Dumbest Person Ever To Sit In The United States Senate'Brits Go Wild When Queen Has Tea With Paddington BearRelated...Angels Pitcher Throws Edible Ammo At Mariners After Bench-Clearing BrawlLA Rams Star's Post-Surgery Stupor Goes ViralSpike Lee Consoles Stephen A. Rhode Island Dunkin' Says It Accidentally Offered Free Coffee To White Residents

var label = "ctx-wait"; console.time(label); window.waitForGlobal( () => window.HP && window.HP.params && window.HP.params.clientUUID && window.localStorage, () => { console.timeEnd(label); A local Dunkin’ giveaway sparked controversy on Wednesday when a Facebook post mistakenly only invited one type of customer: white.https://t.co/zjuJkX5JJ7— NBC 10 WJAR (@NBC10) June 29, 2022 Dunkin’ spokesperson Kelsey Chester told the station that the seemingly racist offer was an “unfortunate” and “embarrassing mistake.”Chester said the Facebook post for the Cranston store was copied from a post announcing a similar coffee giveaway in White Plains, New York. Whoever performed the copy/paste, she said, deleted the word “Plains” but accidentally left in the word “White.”In any case, dozens of people lined up at the Cranston location hoping to get a year of free coffee.Shelley Ramsey, a Black woman and a regular at the store, was shocked to find out about the post, but she believes it was an accident

“It’s too racially diverse in there,” she told WJAR. “It’s just ... that’s not how things roll.”A spokesperson for Dunkin’ told HuffPost the company was “aware of the typo,” and attributed it “to a content transfer error involving a previous opening in White Plains, NY.”“Upon the typo being discovered, we immediately corrected the post,” the spokesperson said. This isn’t the first Dunkin’ location to come under fire for apparent insensitivity. In June 2018, a Baltimore location was criticized for posting a sign that offered customers coupons if they reported any employees “shouting in a language other than English.”In addition, in October of that year, two employees at a franchise in Syracuse, New York, were fired after a viral video showed one of them pouring water on a homeless man.Related...Florida Child Stabbed In The Chest By A Catfish Gets Airlifted To The HospitalPaddleboard Duo Rescues Swimmer Attacked By Great White Shark Off California BeachWhy Some Summer Fruits Make Your Tongue Itch, Even If You're Not Allergic

Passenger Drives To Airport To Rebook Flight After 4-Hour Call Center Wait

Radio station manager Brian Driver took matters into his own hands after waiting on hold for hours with American Airlines.DANIEL SLIM via Getty ImagesIf you want to get something done, you have to do it yourself. That age-old phrase rang true for radio station manager Brian Driver. When his business meetings in Denver wrapped up two days early the week of Father’s Day, he called American Airlines to rebook — only to be faced with an eight-hour callback time.“This has been by far the worst airline call center experience I’ve ever had,” he told The Wall Street Journal

Driver had first tried to change his flight on the airline’s website on June 16, according to the Journal. When it wouldn’t let him rebook, he tried American Airlines’ mobile app but got similar results. Though he managed to reach an agent on the chat platform who rebooked his flight, Driver said the agent couldn’t change his preferred seat.Driver didn’t know it yet, but airlines had either canceled or delayed more than 10,000 flights departing, arriving or flying within the United States that day, according to The Independent.American Airlines ultimately did call Driver back, but only when he was fast asleep at 1:38 a.m.When he attempted to return the call later that day, the phone lines were so flooded with complaints that an automated message told Driver to try again later. He did just that on Saturday morning, only to spend three hours and 45 minutes on hold. The disgruntled customer then just drove to Denver International Airport himself. Though he eventually managed to change his flight in person, the airline was fielding similar calls for days

An American Airlines spokesperson told Business Insider that weather and problems with air traffic control had caused the long hold times.“These challenges, combined with an anomaly in this customer’s booking, resulted in an experience that did not meet what we aim to deliver for our customers,” the spokesperson said, adding that customer service hold times are now “significantly lower.”By the time the Juneteenth holiday weekend was over, the number of canceled or delayed flights on airlines worldwide had exceeded 23,000 — with Friday recorded as the busiest day of flight travel of the year so far.Related...Progressives Want To Make Airlines Give You A Refund For Delays And Cancellations5 Hacks For Getting Into Airport Lounges For CheapThis Tiny Tool Will Prevent You From Being Charged For Overweight LuggageRelated...Paddleboard Duo Rescues Swimmer Attacked By Great White Shark Off California Beach10 Mistakes Tourists Make While Visiting SeattleOpinion: The ‘Murder Capitol’ Where They Murdered For Capital Was By American Design
