Saturn's Moons Enceladus And Tethys Pose For Incredible Family Photo

The latest image from NASA shows an incredible family photo: Enceladus and Tethys, two of Saturn's moons, lined up so it almost looks like a bullseye in space.

That's Enceladus in the foreground, which is about 313 miles across, and "big brother" Tethys is behind it and is more than double the size, or 660 miles across:

The image, which also shows the rings of Saturn, was captured in September by the narrow-angle camera on the Cassini spacecraft. NASA said it was about 1.3 million miles from Enceladus and 1.6 million miles from Tethys when it snapped the photo.

Cassini, which was launched in 1997, has been studying both Saturn and its many moons since it entered the planet's orbit in 2004. In September, the spacecraft found that Enceladus has a "global ocean" sitting just beneath its icy surface

Saturn has 62 known moons, including nine that haven't been named yet. NASA says scientists continue to discover new moons orbiting the planet.

Cassini is a cooperative project between NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. You can follow its mission online here.

Gun Safety Instructor Accidentally Shoots Pastor During Class

A California pastor was accidentally shot during a gun safety class earlier this month.

Instructor Phillip Rushing of the Personal Protection Institute in Modesto had just replaced his rubber training gun with a real pistol at the end of class when someone asked about how to handle an attacker with a knife, the Modesto Bee reported.

Tom Smith, a family pastor at The House Modesto who also helps with church security, volunteered to act as the attacker. During the roleplaying scenario, Rushing pulled out his weapon and shot Smith in the waist, above the hip, the paper said.

Smith is recovering after surgery.

"We're just extremely grateful that he's OK, that he's alive, and I know a lot of people are wondering what's happened to him," Pastor Chuck Cutsinger told KCRA, the local NBC station. "The church is praying for him. We're praying for him through this hard time, but it looks really positive that he will be OK."

The church also issued a message of support via Twitter:

Senior Pastor Glen Bertau told Fox40 that the shot missed Smith's vital organs and that the pastor is doing well. However, he is still in the hospital and his recovery is expected to take months.

He said Smith isn't holding any grudges against the man who shot him.

"Nobody holds any animosity to anybody," he told the station. "It was an accident, so no one is angry. No one’s upset."

A parishioner agreed.

"It was just a freak accident, the instructor, whatever they were doing and the gun had went off and I guess shot him in the stomach they said...but he's OK," parishioner Elijah Collins told CBS 13.

Collins told the station that Smith has been through surgery.

"The church is praying for him and the city is praying for him and his family," he was quoted as saying. "He's very missed right now."

Police are investigating, but Rushing has not been charged with a crime, the Modesto Bee said.

200-Year-Old Giant Salamander Found In Chinese Cave: Reports

The Chinese giant salamander, the largest living amphibian in the world, is a remarkable creature. Sometimes called a “living fossil,” the animal belongs to an ancient lineage spanning millions of years.

Due to overhunting and habitat destruction, the enormous amphibian is almost extinct in the wild. The International Union for Conservation of Nature considers the giant salamander critically endangered, and says the species has experienced a more than 80 percent population decline over the last 45 years.

Finding a Chinese giant salamander in the wild is thus a marvelous achievement in and of itself. Finding one that’s more than 200 years old? Well, that may just be a historic event.

According to local media reports, that’s precisely what happened last week when a fisherman in southwest China stumbled upon a giant salamander in a cave. The fisherman is said to have noticed the creature after accidentally stepping on something “soft and slimy,” per Mother Nature Network.

The salamander, which was discovered in the city of Chongqing, measures more than 4.5 feet in length and weighs over 100 pounds, China News Network reports.

Scientists say the salamander may be more than two centuries old. This would make the animal much older than other members of its species, which have an average lifespan of 80 years in the wild or 55 years in captivity. It would also rank among the oldest living animals on Earth.

The salamander has been transferred to a special research facility for study and protection.

Darth Vader Roasting On An Open Fire Is A 'Star Wars' Yule Log

Tired of the same old yule log? Have you memorized every pop, crack and sizzle -- and found the exact moment where it loops?

Then you'll appreciate the newest version of the yule log, especially if you're among the 7 billion or so people planning to see the new "Star Wars" film this weekend: Five hours of Darth Vader roasting from "Return of the Jedi."

"Cuddle up with your loved ones and bask in the warming glow of this five hour Darth Vader yule log," wrote YouTuber BenjaminApple, who posted the video. "Perfect for holiday parties."

While others have previously looped the scene of Vader burning for yule logs (including one with a wintry snow effect), this latest version is by far the longest.

For other yule log options, there's also the Nick Offerman Yule Log, the NSFW Yule Log and of course the original WPIX Yule Log, first shown on local television in New York in 1966.

Koreans Look To Mock Funerals To Curb High Suicide Rates

Death experience programs in South Korea encourage people to embrace life -- by asking them to lie in a coffin and think about what it would mean to die.

The programs began as a way to address, and possibly combat, the nation's high suicide rates. Korea's suicide rate, which is the highest in the world, has been linked to the competitive, high-pressure nature of school and work culture in the country. South Korea had 29.1 suicides per 100,000 people as of 2012, the most recent year for which information is available, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's Health Data 2015 report.

The fake funeral experience is designed to help people appreciate what they have in their lives by reflecting on the experience of death.

Participants in the exercise dress in white robes and typically write final letters to their loved ones. They also often watch videos of people facing adversity, such as a person born without limbs who has learned to swim or a cancer patient making the most of her last days, the BBC reports.

Then then get into the coffins, which are closed by a man representing the Angel of Death. At some of these mock funeral institutions, participants stay inside for 10 minutes. Others locations may keep people closed in their coffin for half an hour, according to a Vice Japan documentary released earlier this year.

Agence VU noted that these death experience schools have a wide variety of clients, from depressed teenagers to corporate workers who often take part in the practice as a corporate team-building exercise to boost morale against the pressures of work life.

Park Chun-woong, the president of a company that sent employees to participate in the experience, told the BBC he wanted his employees to learn to value life over stress.

"I thought going inside a coffin would be such a shocking experience it would completely reset their minds for a completely fresh start in their attitudes," he said.

"After the coffin experience, I realized I should try to live a new style of life," Cho Yong-tae, who participated in the ritual, told the outlet. "I've realized I've made lots of mistakes. I hope to be more passionate in all the work I do and spend more time with my family."

America’s Tallest Man Has World’s Smallest Problem

It's annoying when websites require you to prove you're human -- and not a robot -- by asking you to type a word or phrase. But we do it all the time because it's a part of modern living.

But what if you were asked to type a word or phrase that offends you?

That's what happened last week to Igor Vovkovinskiy, the tallest man in America, when he tried to change his password on the website for Electronic Arts, a leading video games manufacturer.

EA uses Captcha, a program that protects against bots. When Vovkovinskiy was asked to type a string of words into a box, he was shocked to find that those words were "mysemen."

The Guinness-certified, 7-foot 8-inch man's reaction proved that he is definitely human .... and sensitive.

"I was very offended," Vovkovinskiy told The Huffington Post. "I didn't feel a company as reputable as EA would allow words like this to be used on their Captcha. I realize it was not on purpose, but words like this shouldn't be an option."

Vovkovinskiy reached out to EA via Twitter on Sunday but said he received no response.

Days later, EA spokeswoman Sandy Goldberg told HuffPost the company knows about this issue and is working on a fix.

"We have been flagging issues to our Captcha vendor in hopes that they can find a way to block inappropriate combinations of letters that may appear in the password reset," Goldberg to HuffPost by email. "We do use a third-party service ...  And, unfortunately, at this time they do not offer the ability to block certain combinations."

The company has since apologized to Vovkovinskiy through Twitter.

Jarin Udom, a San Diego-based systems engineer, said the naughty phrase was randomly generated and not intentionally meant to offend.

"The non-random Captchas are usually a book scan or a photo of an address or sign," Udom told HuffPost. "That one is generated by a computer and then distorted to make it harder for a computer to read."

Jerry Irvine, a member of the National Cyber Security Task Force, said it's possible other potentially offensive phrases might pop up on the Captcha box at EA.com's website.

"Unfortunately, short of creating your own proprietary Captcha application or purchasing a professional version from a reputable vendor, there is little to do to limit the potential for specific words or phrases," Irvine told HuffPost by email.

That worries Vovkovinskiy because he's a fan of EA games, many of which are family-friendly. And he doesn't want a child to go through what he did.

"What if a young kid gets a word like this?" he said.

Zoo Auctions Off Artwork Made By ... Animals?

These animals are taking modern art to a whole new level.

The Buttonwood Park Zoo in Massachusetts is holding an auction of fine art pieces -- made by the zoo's animals. Elephants, seals, beavers and more use their mouths and snouts to hold paintbrushes and create shockingly professional and original works of art. Or, they just drop the brushes and go for some good ole' fashion paw-painting.

You can barely tell that these were made by creatures without opposable thumbs:

But the animals aren't just casual artists: they're doing it for a cause. The program is part of the zoo's second annual "Art Gone Wild" fundraiser to benefit its growing education and conservation programs. Last year, they raised nearly $4,000.

The animal's artistic processes come somewhat naturally, thanks to an enhanced training program.

"It's really important that the animals and the keepers have a strong relationship, so when they ask them to do different behaviors, they respond to a word-based command," Lindsey Audunson, the zoological program coordinator, told The Huffington Post.

This video shows the zoo's Harbor Seal, Blue, channeling his creative energy into painting a picture using a brush held in his mouth:

Many of you have seen the great artwork being created by the animals at the Zoo. Many have also wondered how the animals create these masterpieces. This video shows one of our star artists showing off his talent. One of the key components of this program is the strong bond the animals have with their zoo keepers. These enhanced training skills allows zoo keepers to paint with various zoo species in a reward based process. You can help support this great effort by bidding on some of the art available through the Zoo’s Art Gone Wild auction. All proceeds from the art sales go directly to supporting the Zoo’s education and conservation programs.https://www.bpzoo.org/art-gone-wild/

Posted by Buttonwood Park Zoo on Monday, December 14, 2015

This year's auction will feature 50 pieces of original artwork painted by 10 different species of animals, and is set to close Tuesday, Dec. 15th, at 9 p.m. EST.

This Tinder Robot Can Choose Your Date Better Than You Can

The act of using Tinder is pretty mechanical. You swipe right if you find someone attractive, left if you don’t. A robot could do it.

And now one does.

Nicole He, a graduate student in New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program, has invented the True Love Tinder Robot, a rubber hand that does the swiping for singles in search of a soulmate … or a sweaty one-night stand.

Speaking of sweat, the salty moisture exuded from your palms plays an integral part in the robot’s swiping decisions.

To activate the bot, you must open the Tinder app on your phone, put it on a mount and then place your hands inside palm-shaped sensors.

As soon as the sensors can feel the heat of a palm, it will respond with:

“Hello, human. I am True Love Tinder Robot. I’m going to help you find love,” in a Russian-accented computer voice (which should be the voice of every robot in our humble opinion).

It will then show you a picture of a potential date on Tinder and based on your galvanic skin response -- or how sweaty your palms get -- the rubber hand will make a decision for you.

Basically, a bigger change in your body’s response to a photo (i.e., more sweat) means you’re excited, or attracted, and it swipes right. Less sweat? The robot reads this as "human does not like," and it swipes left.

But, if someone has naturally sweaty hands, does that affect the outcome?

"No. Because it measures the changes in your skin response over time, it doesn't matter if you are naturally sweaty or not sweaty to begin with," He told The Huffington Post.

And has anyone ever been surprised by the way the robot swipes?

“It happens sometimes,” He said. “But it makes you consider the truth revealed in how your body reacted to a certain person.”

He has a rather meta answer on her website to explain why she created the robot:

In a time when it's very normal for couples to meet online, we trust that algorithms on dating sites can find us suitable partners … This project explores the idea that the computer knows us better than we know ourselves, and therefore it has better authority on who we should date than we do. In a direct way, the True Love Tinder Robot makes the user confront what it feels like to let computers make intimate decisions for us.

This reasoning may also be why He’s robot has a snarky sense of humor about the whole ordeal. It says things like “You can trust me because I’m a robot,” “I can read your feelings” and “Judge this person” to you as  you use the invention -- which, by the way, is a little more complex than other Tinder-swiping doodads.

The Tinder Robot is merely what He describes as “LEDs, a couple sheets of metal acting as galvanic skin response sensor, a bunch of wires, a box, and a speaker” that she programmed to a tiny open-source computer called Arduino, but getting a touch-screen phone to respond to her robot’s rubber hand was no small feat.

“It was surprisingly annoying,” she wrote. He said she used a combination of metal and rubber to make it work.

If you're offended by a robot choosing your matches rather than swiping yourself, He has one last thing to say: “Good luck on Tinder!”

9 Regular People Who Look Exactly Like Celebrities

They say everyone has a twin, and while Hollywood is full of doppelgängers, there are plenty of civilians out there who bear an impressive resemblance to some of Tinseltown's A-listers.

In 2015, thanks to the wonder of Instagram and Tumblr, many of these lookalikes found their own 15 minutes of fame, just for their ability to make you do a double-take.

Chelsea Marr might share some DNA with Angelina Jolie.

Likewise, Morgan Jensen even managed to confuse the superstar songstress after her friend posted a couple photos on Tumblr earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Kylie Jenner might want to hire Gabrielle Waters if she ever needs an on set stand-in.

There's also 3-year-old Sienna Maunsell, who is twinning with Harper Beckham.

We can't forget Serbian pop star Jelena Karleusa, who claimed she was the inspiration behind Kim Kardashian's stint as a platinum blonde.

Then there is Robert McKinnon, who has had some "pretty ludicrous" experiences this year because of his resemblance to Ryan Gosling.

Oh, and there's no denying Claudia Alende could maybe be related to Megan Fox.

And lastly, there's a Swedish bartender named Konrad Annerud, who caught the Internet's attention for looking like a young Leonardo DiCaprio.
