As Gang Violence Sweeps El Salvador, Rumor Has It That Only Gangsters' Girlfriends Can Be Blondes

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) — Word on the street is that only the girlfriends of gang members are allowed to be redheads or blondes. So in this violent place, women are scurrying to salons to give up their blond hair and highlights, to dye it all black — not out of fashion sense, but out of fear.

"They also say you can't wear yellow or red clothing," said Claudia Castellanos, a beautician at an upscale salon. "Can you believe it? They've already attacked a woman on a bus for wearing yellow." There's no evidence the rumors are true. The gangs, sophisticated criminal organizations, even issued a statement to deny the hair-color decree.

But with violence in El Salvador reaching levels rivaling those of the civil war that ended more than two decades ago, few are willing to take risks.

El Salvador has just experienced one of its most violent months since the end of the civil war in 1992, with 635 homicides reported in May for the country of just over 6 million people. June is on track to break that mark, with the latest bloodshed coming Sunday when suspected gang members killed two soldiers guarding a bus terminal in the capital.

Fear is pervasive across San Salvador. As daylight fades, stores close early and streets empty. At night, roadblocks go up to thwart possible grenade attacks on police stations, where officers sleep rather than risk being attacked while riding buses home.

Taxi drivers memorize signals to give gang lookouts who guard neighborhoods, flashing codes with their high beams and rolling down their windows to make themselves visible.

Castellanos counts the number of women who've come to her salon recently seeking to color their hair dark: One, two, three, four ...

"You don't wait for clarifications," said Maria Jose Estrada, a former blonde who lives on the outskirts of San Salvador. "These people are crazy and they will kill you."

Police officials and others blame the worsening insecurity on the breakdown of a truce made between the gangs and the government in 2013. While the homicide rate plunged, critics say the truce gave the gangs time to strengthen, train and acquire heavier arms than they had in the past.

Jailed gang leaders were moved from maximum-security prisons to more lax facilities where they were able to run their criminal operations remotely.

But in January, the 6-month-old government of President Salvador Sanchez Ceren publicly rejected any truce and launched an aggressive crackdown, putting gang leaders back in maximum-security cells. The change has meant the streets now are controlled by younger, better-armed criminals who are willing to be reckless.

"You take away the mature leadership, and you get a structure that is made up of younger, fanatical people who want to make a name for themselves," said Raul Mijango, a former guerrilla and a facilitator of the truce. "They want war."

The police say they are ready for battle.

"Things have to get worse before they get better," said a police official, who agreed to comment only if not quoted by name for fear of reprisals. "When I see one (gang member) on the street, I'm going to shoot him before he shoots me."

Police say the crackdown on gang strongholds in the cities has caused members to flee to surrounding rural areas, bringing violence with them.

On a warm, muggy May night in Olocuitla, a town about 20 miles (30 kilometers) south of San Salvador, the bodies of two teens were found in a steep gully after a shootout with police near an old cattle stable, which gang members had turned into a shooting range. One of the dead was the leader of the cell, a 16-year-old who had a grenade in his hand.

Such evidence of crime's spread has rural residents taking new precautions.

Carlos Treminio, a street vendor who lives on the north edge of the capital, now accompanies his teenage son and daughter on their walk to school rather than leave them vulnerable to gang recruiters.

"These jerks lurk around the schools and offer everything to join the gang. If you refuse, they kill you," Treminio said. "I will do everything to protect my children."

Howard Cotto, assistant national police chief and a former guerrilla commander, said the gangs will not find the sort of rural support enjoyed by rebels in the 1980s because they have no ideology.

"They are much more vulnerable," he said.

But, he believes, nothing will change unless the country addresses problems of poverty and a lack of opportunity for young people. The government has arrested 12,000 gang members in the last year with little to show for it, he said.

"We can go in and arrest 50 gang members and 50 more will take their places," Cotto said. "With just arrests, we won't accomplish anything."

Mijango, who helped negotiate the last truce, sees negotiation as the path to avoid the sort of bloodshed the country saw when his Farabundo Marti National Liberation was fighting conservative governments in the 1980s.

Now the former rebel movement is the governing party and it is the gangs who control territories where 90 percent of El Salvador's people live, noted Miguel Fortin Magana, the chief forensics officer for the country's Supreme Court.

"This is like a virus that has spread throughout the country," he said.

KFC 'Fried Rat' Is In Fact Chicken, Lab Test Confirms

It doesn't look appetizing, but it's definitely chicken.

Last week, KFC was forced to confront a customer's accusations that he'd been served a fried rat in a three-piece meal at a Los Angeles store. An independent lab test confirmed that the breaded lump is in fact chicken, KFC spokesman Rodrigo Coronel said in an email to The Huffington Post on Monday.

Devorise Dixon, 25, posted a photo of a nasty-looking entree to Facebook after he bit into it and something didn't seem right. He said the piece of food had a rubbery texture, and that a store manager told him it was a rat.

WENT BACK TO KFC YESTERDAY AND SPOKE TO THE MANAGER SHE SAID IT IS A RAT AND APOLOGIZED, IT'S TIME FOR A LAWYER!!! BESAFE DON'T EAT FAST FOOD !!!

Posted by Devorise Dixon on Friday, June 12, 2015

KFC was quick to counter Dixon's claims. The company said he hadn't responded to requests to have the meal tested by a lab and wasn't cooperating with an investigation. KFC also said that a photo from Dixon's Instagram feed, which shows the morsel from a different angle, made it clear that the food was chicken (not rodent).

KFC now says it's got the science to back up its counterclaim. Coronel said that Dixon's attorney obtained the specimen and turned it over for testing at an independent lab. Those tests confirmed that the chicken tender was made of chicken.

Coronel also alleged that Dixon lied about being told the piece of chicken was a rat.

"We did an internal investigation and talked to all employees. That statement is false," Coronel wrote. "The right thing for this customer to do is to apologize and cease making false claims about the KFC brand."

Coronel said the company is "reviewing all options" when it comes to any potential legal action against Dixon.

NASA Observes 3-Mile-High 'Pyramid' On Ceres, But Bright Spots Remain A Mystery

Twinkle, twinkle little star dwarf planet, how scientists wonder what you are.

The mysteries of Ceres, the largest object in our solar system's asteroid belt, continue to deepen. For over a decade, scientists have been puzzled by a cluster of inexplicable bright white spots on the dwarf planet's surface. The clearest photo yet taken of the spots does little to shed light, so to speak, on the matter.

ceres bright spots

The photo, snapped by NASA's Dawn Spacecraft on June 9 from an altitude of 2,700 miles, reveals a grouping of highly reflective spots -- the biggest one is six miles across -- nestled in a large crater on Ceres' surface.

Per a release from NASA, Dawn uses a suite of instruments to analyze the light reflected off Ceres, thereby helping scientists identify the minerals on the dwarf planet's surface. At this point, the bright spots are thought to be ice or salt, though there are other possibilities, too, including geysers or volcanoes of some sort.

Dawn also snapped a photo of a mountain, three miles high and shaped like a pyramid, that protrudes from an otherwise smooth area of Ceres' surface. We've circled the mountain in yellow below:

ceres pyramid mountain

The spacecraft is scheduled to move much closer to Ceres on June 30, descending from its current altitude of 2,700 miles to just 900 miles above the surface of the dwarf planet. It will reach its new, lower orbit in early August, at which point we should expect still clearer photos of the astronomical anomaly. For now, though, the mystery persists.

According to the McDonald's website, a regular Filet-O-Fish contains 390 calories, 19 grams of fat and 590 milligrams of sodium. So she ingested 3,900 calories, 190 grams of fat and 5900 milligrams of sodium. Burp.

A former Miss Earth New Zealand who says she is a model, Zisser appears to be no poser in competitive eating. According to People, she recently demolished a 5-pound burrito. And now she will be matching appetites in the big-time. Zisser is entered in New York City's Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4, the contest confirmed with The Huffington Post. One of her adversaries is expected to be defending women's champion Miki Sudo, who ate 34 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes last year.

Good luck, Nela.

Life For A 15-Year-Old After Fight Video Went Viral

Emily, 15, became known as “shovel girl” after a video went viral of her and another teen having a fist fight, until Emily grabbed a shovel and threw it at the other girl’s head. What has life been like for Emily since hundreds of thousands of people watched her throw that shovel?

Emily claims that she’s had more than 2,000 death threats since the video went viral. But she says she wants people to know that she’s not the bully; she’s the victim. “A lot of people were making fun of me on Twitter, calling me names,” the teen tells Dr. Phil. “People threatened to hit me with cars. They said I should get hit by a shovel, because it wasn’t fair to her.” Emily adds that she was nervous to go out in public because of all the hate she had received online. “I can’t talk to anybody about anything, because they say, ‘Are you going to get the shovel?’ Social media has made my life a lot worse,” she says.

Dr. Phil asks Emily why she and the other girl had a fight.

Emily says that they planned the fight via messages to one another on Facebook. “We were just arguing back and forth and eventually, she told me to kill myself,” she claims in the video above.

On the day of the fight, Emily claims the other girl showed up at her house with some of their other friends. “We fought. Then I told her to leave. She said she wasn’t leaving, and I said, ‘I’m just going to shoot you with a BB gun’… I wasn’t really going to shoot her,” Emily says. “She came up behind me. I could see the shovel, and I just picked it up and hit her with it.” The shovel hit the other girl in the back of the head, knocking her to the ground.

Dr. Phil asks Emily’s mom, “You say you’re kind of proud of her because why?”

“I was proud of her because she took up for herself. I wasn’t exactly proud that she used a shovel, but it did get the girl to leave,” she says. “Emily did not want to fight. Emily’s not a fighter.”

Dr. Phil says to Emily, “I noticed when you did hit her with the shovel, she was retreating. She was moving away. So it seems like she was moving away from you, and you weren’t in immediate threat. You had to run after her and throw the shovel to hit her in the back of the head. Why did you hit her with the shovel?”

“I wasn’t really thinking. After everything that happened, my mind went blank,” she says.

“She could have been killed,” Dr. Phil says.

Dr. Phil has a message for bystanders, like the person who filmed Emily’s fight and posted it online. “I think bystanders who do nothing to protect the victims are as guilty as bullies who do the bullying,” he says. “As bystanders, we all have duties and responsibilities, and I would hope that as her mother, you would counsel her about what to do in that kind of situation.”

Millions Of Mummified Dogs Discovered In Ancient Egyptian Catacombs

Ancient Egyptians are well-known for having worshipped animals, and archaeologists are used to unearthing nonhuman mummies. But a recent investigation in an ancient tomb south of Cairo led to a find of amazing proportions: an estimated 8 million mummified dogs that have been underground for more than 2,000 years.

Researchers from Cardiff University in Wales chronicle their discovery in a study published this month in the journal Antiquity.

The researchers found the remains within the catacombs of a temple dedicated to the jackal-headed god Anubis, in a burial ground called Saqqara. The center passageway is about 568 feet long and side corridors make the tomb up to 459 feet wide, according to Live Science. Many of the mummified canines have disintegrated or been removed by grave robbers.

"It would be quite difficult to easily find complete, nicely wrapped mummies," Cardiff University archaeology professor and lead researcher Paul Nicholson told CNN. "What you have got is the decayed remains of the mummies."

The archaeologists examined the number of mummies in a portion of the catacombs and used that count to estimate how many likely filled the tomb.

The tomb, which was likely built in the fourth century B.C., was first discovered in the 19th century, but archaeologists had no idea how many mummies it housed until this latest discovery. Researchers also found the remains of jackals, foxes and several falcons, The Independent reported.

The surrounding area was quite busy in antiquity, according to the researchers. The temples brought economic activity from visitors, merchants and breeders who raised dogs to be mummified for the Anubis temple.

"It would have been a busy place," Nicholson told Live Science. "A permanent community of people living there supported by the animal cults."

Italy Sets Record For World's Longest Pizza And It Looks Gouda!

ROME (AP) — The wait was on the long side for the pizza -- 18 hours -- but this was an extraordinary pie: 1.59545 kilometers, or nearly a mile long.

More than 60 of Italy's best pizza-makers worked through the night to create the pizza at Milan's world fair, Expo 2015. Their toil was rewarded with a proclamation by Guinness World Records judge Saturday that it was the world's longest pizza. Expo organizers said the record-setting pie, made with 1.5 tons of mozzarella and 2 tons of tomato sauce, weighed some 5 tons in all.

The creation topped the record of a 1.1415-kilometer-long pizza made in Spain.

Fair-goers could eat slices of the Milan pizza for free. Slices of long, rectangular pizzas with various toppings are a popular street food in Italy.

Naked Man Screams 'I'm On Fire'; Pours Milk On Himself In Superstore

Remember the milkman? This is not him.

Two Kentucky men were arrested on Saturday, three days after one filmed the other running naked through a Walmart, pouring milk on his head and screaming "I'm on fire!"

Footage of the incident shows an individual wearing nothing but socks, shoes, and what is described by news outlets as a Halloween mask.

David Daniels, of Belfry, and Timothy Smith, of Phelps, allegedly pulled the prank on Wednesday at the Walmart in South Williamson, WOWKTV reports.

The county sheriff believes both men are guilty of indecent exposure.

"I wouldn't want to go in Walmart and see somebody walking around naked or running around naked, so they need to go to jail," Pike County Sheriff Rodney Scott told WKYT.

No word on whether the suspects stopped off for cookies before feeling the scene.

Blind Cat Who Loves Hiking Turned This Man Into A Cat Person

Just because a cat can’t see, doesn’t mean she can’t appreciate the great outdoors.

Patrick Corr, a 28-year-old filmmaker from Cork City, Ireland, proved that in a beautiful video filmed earlier this month, in which he goes on a hike with his blind calico cat, Stevie, at his side.

To ensure Stevie’s safety, Corr has had to train her to walk on a leash when she goes outside.

“It took a lot of patience to accomplish this feat,” Corr told The Huffington Post in an email. He said walking on the leash is now “the norm” for her -- “she makes it look so easy.”

The film shows Corr and Stevie walking in an area called The Cross that overlooks the town of Clonmel in County Tipperary.

“I think Stevie is a truly remarkable cat and I wanted to capture how I truly felt about her and share that with the world in a meaningful way,” Corr said.

Corr got Stevie from Cork's Animal Care Society about three years ago, after seeing an ad on social media saying that Stevie needed a home with a patient owner who could give her the special care she needs. In an earlier video about Stevie, Corr notes that he has to make sure he keeps everything in his house in the exact same place at all times so as to not confuse the blind feline, whom he describes as "curious and affectionate."

Corr explained that he was “never really a cat person,” but Stevie’s changed his tune.

“That’s not to say I didn’t like cats, far from it,” he said. “It’s just that up until I met Stevie, cats didn’t really take up any of my time; I had other priorities. But now, it’s safe to say, I’ve been converted.”

He added that Stevie is "just one of many animals out there who have been rescued" from shelters or life on the streets. "She wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for the incredible hard work of the Animal Care Society in Cork," he said.

NASA Preps Mission To Search For Life On Europa, One Of Jupiter's Moons

The celestial body with the greatest potential for life in the solar system may not be Mars after all. Europa, one of Jupiter's moons, is believed to have an ocean just beneath its frozen crust -- and some scientists think it may have just the right ingredients for life.

Now, NASA is getting ready to send a spacecraft there to find out more.

"We know that on Earth, everywhere that there's water, we find life," Robert Pappalardo, Europa Mission project scientist, said in a video released by the space agency. "So could Europa have the ingredients to support life?"

Pappalardo also wrote a blog post about the Europa mission last month for The Huffington Post. "Finding life elsewhere would end our cosmic isolation: if there is life in our own planetary backyard, then life is probably common throughout the universe," he wrote at the time.

Europa is one of the four largest moons of Jupiter, which were discovered by Galileo in 1610. Along with its icy crust and the possible ocean beneath, the moon is known for the red streaks across its surface.

"There is too much evidence right now lying around on the surface -- the red stuff -- that suggests that something's going on there," Claudia Alexander, who was mission project manager of the Galileo spacecraft, which circled Jupiter and its moons in the 1990s, said in the clip. "Is that an environment that is habitable for any sort of life form? By golly, we really have got to go back and figure that out."

The potential mission to Europa passed its first major review last week, and is now headed toward a phase of development called formulation. If everything goes according to plan, the spacecraft will launch in the 2020s for a journey that will take several years.

Once it arrives, the spacecraft will orbit Jupiter rather than the moon itself.

"Europa is bathed in radiation from Jupiter," Pappalardo said. "Any mission that goes in the vicinity of Europa is cooked pretty quickly."

To prevent that from happening, the spacecraft will orbit Jupiter, make close flybys of Europa, then quickly leave that radioactive hot zone. It would repeat the process about every two weeks.

NASA said the mission plans will allow for at least 45 flybys of Europa -- at times getting within 16 miles of its icy crust. During each flyby, the instruments on board the craft will wake up to take photographs and other readings.

According to NASA:

The selected payload includes cameras and spectrometers to produce high-resolution images of Europa's surface and determine its composition. An ice penetrating radar will determine the thickness of the moon's icy shell and search for subsurface lakes similar to those beneath Antarctica's ice sheet. The mission will also carry a magnetometer to measure the strength and direction of the moon's magnetic field, which will allow scientists to determine the depth and salinity of its ocean.

In 2012, the Hubble Space Telescope spotted what appeared to be giant plumes of water erupting from the surface of Europa. Those plumes have not been seen since. However, if they occur again, the spacecraft would be able to fly through the water vapor and take samples.

“Today we’re taking an exciting step from concept to mission, in our quest to find signs of life beyond Earth,” John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, said in a news release. “Observations of Europa have provided us with tantalizing clues over the last two decades, and the time has come to seek answers to one of humanity’s most profound questions.”

Chinese Woman Buys 100 Dogs To Save Them From Meat Festival

A retired school teacher and animal advocate saved the lives of 100 dogs on Saturday after she paid about $1,100 to save them from an annual dog meat festival in the southern Chinese city of Yulin.

Yang Xiaoyun, 65, traveled about 1,500 miles from her home in the city of Tianjin to secure the dogs, Agence France-Presse reported.

Yang has been rescuing animals since 1995, when she pulled an abandoned kitten from a river. In 1999, she founded a dog and cat sanctuary known as the "Common Home for All." She has taken in hundreds of animals and has sold her home, relying on rented space to house them, according to a 2013 video about her work.

She prepares meals for the animals and calls them her "children," the India Times reported. Her shelter now houses almost 1,500 dogs and 200 cats.

Yang's selfless act in Yulin comes as international observers and activists continue to draw attention to the city's dog meat festival. Dog meat consumption does have a historical precedent in China, according to Peter Li, a China policy specialist at Humane Society International and associate professor at the University of Houston-Downtown, but the Yulin festival only dates back to 2009.

About 10,000 dogs are killed each year for the Yulin festival, which coincides with the summer solstice. Some of the dogs that arrive in the city have collars, reported the Daily Beast, indicating that they may be stolen pets.

Actor and animal advocate Ricky Gervais condemned the festival and said footage he saw from past years broke his heart. "I will never forget the look of bewilderment and fear on the faces of these poor animals -- the dogs and cats await a horrible fate," he said in a statement. "No animal deserves to be treated like this."

Yang reportedly wants to open another dog sanctuary, in Yulin. Check out more photos of Saturday's rescue below.

Mysterious Whale Deaths In Alaska Baffle Scientists

Something is killing endangered fin whales in Alaskan waters and scientists have no idea what it is.

Since Memorial Day weekend, boaters, fishermen and pilots have reported seeing dead fin whales floating in waters between Kodiak and Unimak Pass in the Kodiak Islands.

Using photos submitted with the reports, scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Juneau believe at least nine whales have died at the same time and place, south of Afognak Island in the Kodiak Archipelago.

fin whales

"It's an unusual and mysterious event," Kate Wynne, an Alaska Sea Grant marine mammal specialist and professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), said in a statement. Wynne, who is working with NOAA to investigate the deaths, says scientists rarely see more than one dead fin whale every two years.

Fin whales are the second-largest species of whales, often feeding in large groups that include other species, such as humpback and minke whales, as well as dolphins. Their only non-human predator are killer whales, according to NOAA.

The fact that the whale carcasses were intact rules out predation by killer whales, according to Wynne. Scientists now suspect the cause is related to something the whales ate. "It suggests that... a feeding group of fin whales ran into a toxin, or bio-toxin, [a] human caused, induced, toxin, something that they were exposed to together in a short period of time,” she told Alaska Public Media.

"There is no smoking gun in this environmental mystery," she said in a statement.

Fin whales feed in the summer on small schooling fish, such as herring and sand lance, by opening their wide mouths and filtering the food in through baleen plates.

Bree Witteveen, a marine mammal specialist with UAF who works with Wynne, told Alaska Dispatch News that the "go-to answer" is likely a harmful algae bloom. But even if evidence of one is found, "[w]e probably won’t ever get a definitive answer," she said.

Adding to the mystery is why just one species was affected and not their prey or other marine life.

In an email to The Huffington Post, Wynne said that a current water sampling from the area showed no biotoxins, but it might not reflect the conditions present a month ago when the event occurred. "It is hard to trace a source when dealing only with evidence in the aftermath," she said.

"Most whales that have washed ashore were already too badly decomposed to get the samples needed for many important analyses," she said, adding that an analysis of a biotoxin sample collected from the "freshest" carcass should be available next week.

With the exception of two that washed ashore, the dead whales are now drifting along both sides of Kodiak Island.

Dramatic Video Shows British 'Red Devils' Paratrooper Saved Mid-Air After Parachute Fails

LONDON, June 20 (Reuters) - A British army paratrooper from the country's famed Red Devils display team has had a narrow escape in front of hundreds of spectators, after he was caught mid-air by a fellow team member when his parachute failed to open properly.

The airshow in northwest England where the incident happened late on Friday said it was the first parachute fail in 25 years for the team, which is formed of 12 members of Britain's elite Parachute Regiment.

Spectators published dramatic photos and video on social media showing one soldier with a fully open parachute wrapping his legs around the ropes of his team mate's tangled parachute below.

"It was awful watching them struggling, especially when they veered off course -- until we realized they were purposely targeting the biggest area of water for ditching into," a spectator said on the airshow's Facebook page.

The men landed in a nearby marina. A British army spokesman said they were both unharmed and that the incident was being investigated. The Red Devils take part in over 60 public displays a year. (Reporting by David Milliken; Editing by Digby Lidstone)

Germany To Turn 62 Military Bases Into Nature Sanctuaries For Birds, Beetles And Bats

The German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation announced on Thursday that it will turn 62 military bases into tranquil nature reserves.

"We are seizing a historic opportunity with this conversion -- many areas that were once no-go zones are no longer needed for military purposes," Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks said, according to Agence France-Presse.

German military reforms have allowed the country to set aside 76,600 acres of forests, marshes, meadows and moors for wildlife. "We are fortunate that we can now give these places back to nature," Hendricks said.

Ruth Schedlbauer, a spokeswoman for Germany's Federal Agency for Nature Conservation, told The Huffington Post that species like the middle spotted woodpecker, above, and lesser spotted eagle, below, will live in the sanctuaries.

lesser spotted eagle

The reserves will not only protect birds -- threatened bats and beetles will also thrive there, Schedlbauer said.

The majority of the former bases and training areas are in historic West Germany, west of the former Iron Curtain. The fortified borderlands that separated communist and capitalist Europe became accidental nature reserves during the Cold War. Many of these areas are now part of the European Green Belt , a chain of habitats that runs from Norway to Turkey.

"In the remoteness of the inhuman border fortifications of the Iron Curtain nature was able to develop nearly undisturbed," a Green Belt spokesperson told the Independent. "Today the European Green Belt is an ecological network and memorial landscape running from the Barents to the Black Sea."

Jilted Bride Penned The World's Most Depressing eBay Listing

Wedding dresses for sale on eBay are a dime a dozen. But this listing is different -- this woman's dress has a sob story to tell.

"Rejected wedding dress seeks lasting love and holy matrimony," a UK listing that went up earlier this week reads. From there, the dress takes the reins and spins its sad, sad tale.

ebay

"I was supposed to be worn at City Hall in New York," the size 8 ivory lace Diane von Furstenberg number says. "I was going to be the main attraction of a 60s wedding theme. I was going to be low-key, but elegant (I still am, for that matter)."

But then the owner and her Brooklyn-based hubby-to-be ended their relationship -- and things began looking pretty dismal for the dress. "She kept me in the box. Because she couldn’t bear to look at me. I am a constant reminder to her of what could have been. So she wants to sell me."

Oof, you're killing us, little DVF dress.

According to Metro, the would-be-bride behind the listing is a 30-year-old British woman who wishes to remain unnamed. Read her ad in its holy-God-that's-depressing entirety below:

I was supposed to be worn at City Hall in New York.

I was going to be the main attraction of a 60s wedding theme.

I was going to be low-key, but elegant (I still am, for that matter).

I was going to complement a 60s updo, nude courts and a bouquet of Lily of the Valley.

When my owner put on a dress just like me in Selfridges, she knew I was the one so she ordered me online and had me delivered to her husband-to-be in Brooklyn.

I’m not over the top, nor am I too dressed down, and she thought she could perhaps wear me to other occasions in the future.

She thought I was a dress she could look back on and smile, not cringe at fashion faux pas (she was right).

When I arrived, she kept me sealed in my box so nothing could ruin me.

Then they split up.

And she kept me in the box.

Because she couldn’t bear to look at me.

I am a constant reminder to her of what could have been.

So she wants to sell me.

Not necessarily to a bride, but to anyone looking to give me the home I deserve.

A home where I’ll get worn and admired and dry-cleaned (as and when necessary).

She can’t take me back to DVF because they no longer stock me.

I’m limited edition, if you like.

And the first time I have been taken out of my box is for these photos.

Because who’s going to buy a dress based on a picture of a box?

I can’t wait to be worn by you (and to see the back of my cardboard confines once and for all).

Love,

Zarita (in Ivory).

xx

Cat That Gained Viral Fame After Saving Young Boy Wins Hero Dog Award

LOS ANGELES (AP) — For the first time, a Los Angeles shelter's Hero Dog award has gone to a cat.

In May 2014, Tara the cat fought off a dog that attacked her 6-year-old owner as he rode his bicycle in the driveway of his Bakersfield home.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles says Tara body-slammed Scrappy, a chow-mix that lived next door.

Tara chased the dog back home. It was later euthanized.

The boy, Jeremy Triantafilo, got eight stitches, and security camera footage made Tara an international celebrity.

Tara was mellow on Friday as the spcaLA gave her its 33rd annual Hero Dog Award in Los Angeles. There was one change: the word "Dog" was scratched out and the word "Cat" etched in.

LA Woman Accused Of Killing Boyfriend In Canned Food Attack

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Southern California woman has been charged with beating her boyfriend to death with canned food.

She was jailed. It's unclear whether she had obtained an attorney.

Rescue Mission For 'Lifeless Body' Finds Papa Smurf Balloon

Someone really blue it.

When a train passenger in Dusseldorf, Germany, saw a dead "bearded man in a blue coat and red trousers" near the railroad tracks Tuesday evening, he immediately reported it to authorities.

A helicopter crew soon spotted the potential victim and, indeed, he was wearing red pants, blue outerwear, a red cap and a white beard, UPI.com reports.

However, the so-called "lifeless body" was actually a partially deflated Papa Smurf balloon, according to the Mirror.

Members of the rescue crew said the balloon victim looked a little deflated, but was otherwise fine, according to a press release from the District Police Rhein-Kreis Neuss.

Papa Smurf was taken to the nearest police station, but all attempts to reach relatives have failed, according to the release.

Although rescuing a balloon seems ridiculous, officials deemed the effort a success.

"The emergency call from the witness was completely justified," police said, according to TheLocal.de. "Under different conditions, it could have saved lives."

Official Upset With Rap Video Shot In W. Va. Courtroom

NEW CUMBERLAND, W.Va. (AP) — Guns, fatigues, and a violent crime: A rapper used a West Virginia courtroom to film his vigilante-themed music video, and that has disturbed one local official.

Hancock County Commissioner Jeff Davis is not happy that the courtroom was used by a Weirton rapper known as Mini Thin.

Davis wants his fellow commissioners to adopt rules to ensure a similar scenario doesn't occur again, The Weirton Daily News (http://bit.ly/1TB9EVI) reported.

Jason Mallas said that in his musical persona as Mini Thin, he used the Circuit Court chambers to film the video June 12.

An actress named Jennifer Blaze wore fatigues during the four-hour shoot, and fake guns were used to depict a story about the rescue of a rape victim.

Mallas said the video is a spoof on the 1999 movie "The Boondock Saints," about two Boston brothers who become vigilantes.

"We needed a courtroom," Mallas said. "If it wasn't that one, it would be another one. I'm glad we were able to use it."

Davis said the shoot sends the wrong message about public safety.

"I hope that, as long as I'm part of this watch, it doesn't happen again," he said.

Davis said county officials were unaware of the shoot in the Northern Panhandle courtroom.

Mallas said the courtroom was scheduled through a judge's office. Security, he said, was handled through the Hancock County Sheriff's Department.

"I went through all the proper channels," he said. "I didn't just march in there and say, 'We're shooting a video.'"

Hancock County Sheriff Ralph Fletcher said the film crew was screened at the courthouse entrance and a bailiff provided security in the courtroom. Mallas reimbursed the county for the bailiff's time, he said.

Fletcher said, however, he was under the impression the courtroom was being used for a documentary.

As for the video shoot sending out the wrong message, Mallas said Davis missed the point. He said his songs deliver messages against bulling and drug use.

"They can go ahead and think whatever they want," he said. "They don't know my story."

Watch What Happens When A Guy Pours Molten Metals Into Water

Ever wonder how molten metals react when poured into water?

Even if you haven't, the results are still pretty cool.

In a video released this week, the Backyard Scientist, who appears to have a thing for reducing elements to liquid on YouTube, melted pewter, tin, bismuth, lead, zinc, aluminum and thermite and dropped them into an aquarium to see what happens.

The metals with the highest melting points -- aluminum and thermite -- produced the most interesting results. The aluminum piled at the bottom, forming the equivalent of drip castles you might make at the beach, and the thermite remained on fire even as it descended through the two-foot tall tank.

The Backyard Scientist noted that he conducted the experiment because he's told that working with molten metals could kill him -- something he disputes to a certain degree. While what he's doing is dangerous and shouldn't be attempted at home, he emerged unscathed.

Incidentally, the metal with the highest melting point is tungsten, which at 6,170 Fahrenheit would likely prove problematic for a backyard experiment.

Pro Tip: Don't Steal A Stick If You Can't Drive A Stick

Talk about a bum steer: Utah Police say a man tried to steal a car, then had to call a cab after he couldn't figured out how to use a stick shift.

Officers in Logan said they arrested Alexander Katz on Tuesday after the 19-year-old and his underage girlfriend allegedly stole a car with the keys still inside, the Deseret News reports.

Police said Katz' girlfriend knew how to drive a stick and attempted to walk him through the process.

"I'm not 100 percent certain why she doesn't just get around and get in the driver's seat so they can take the car and use it," Police Chief Gary Jensen said, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Eventually, the pair ditched the car at a supermarket parking lot in Providence. They fled on foot to a nearby gas station where they called a cab, HJNews.com reports.

When the duo saw police, they ran off again.

Katz's girlfriend was soon arrested. Police said she told them that she and Katz had started the evening looking for Benadryl before deciding to steal a car, according to the website.

Katz was arrested a few hours later after police found him using information he had given the taxi company, according to Newser.

Katz was arrested on suspicion of transferring a stolen vehicle, a second-degree felony, and failure to stop at the command of law enforcement, KSL.com reports. His teenage companion was released to her parents. Her case was transferred to juvenile court.

Channing Tatum Loves Pinterest, Stuffs His Favorite Sandwich With Cheetos

God among men Channing Tatum blessed Reddit with an AMA (or "Ask Me Anything") Wednesday and disclosed many fascinating details about himself.

From telling the world that he nicknamed his penis Gilbert to confessing that he once pooped in a crazy blizzard, Tatum revealed that he can be ridiculously human sometimes. Especially when it comes to making his favorite sandwich:

"Get ready: it's very complicated," he wrote. "Bread, white. Peanut butter, not crunchy, creamy. Grape jelly, double portion, more than you think should actually fit on a piece of white bread. Bread. And then some Cheetos shoved in there, and then you're good to go."

Check out more of our favorite foodie moments from Tatum's AMA below.

On whether he'd eat himself if HE were a hot dog and he was starving:

"That's like a psychological profiling question. Yeah, why not. I like to eat. Let's just be real about it."

On the rumor that he wore a T-shirt that read "I hate pizza" in seventh grade and got into a fight over it:

"Hahahaha what? No. But I fucking wish. That sounds like an awesome story. Because I don't hate pizza. If that did happen I would respect anyone that punched me because I wore that shirt. Because pizza is awesome."

On his Chili's order:

"Just a beer and some chicken crisps."

Bonus: On how he turns that frown upside down:

"Oh man. I love Pinterest. Swear to god. Just to not think about all the shit I have to do or what's going wrong, I just go and look at Pinterest. Or Flipboard."

Conclusion? Channing is perfect. And he can still do this:

Bacon-Eating, Lingerie-Wearing 115-Year-Old Is The World's New Oldest Person

She may be 115 but she's still rocking lacy lingerie and eating whatever she wants. New Yorker Susannah Mushatt Jones just became the oldest recorded person in the world, after former titleholder Jeralean Talley died this week at the age of 116. Talley, who passed away in her home, was the third oldest-person titleholder to die this year.

susannah mushatt jones

Jones pictured on her 113th birthday.

Jones will celebrate her 116th birthday on July 6th, according to the Gerontology Research Group, which keeps a running list of the world's verified living supercentenarians.

She was born and raised in Alabama but moved to New York City in the early 1920s to work as a child caregiver for the city's wealthy families. She never had children of her own but still remains close with some of her nieces and nephews who live nearby.

Jones lives on her own, with the help of 24-hour home health aides. She goes to bed early -- usually sleeping 10 hours a night -- and also takes naps throughout the day, her niece Lois Judge told The Huffington Post. She starts her mornings early with a hearty breakfast -- her favorite meal is bacon strips, grits and eggs -- then usually spends most of the day in her recliner. She also has an affinity for lacy lingerie. "You can never get too old to wear fancy stuff," she's said, according to TIME.

For her upcoming birthday, the family plans to get together like they do every year and the local senior center will also have a celebration. We know what's probably on her birthday wish list: lingerie.

Sex, Drugs And 'Heavy Metal Parking Lot'

The real debauchery at Judas Priest concerts back in the '80s didn't take place on stage -- it went down in the parking lot.

Filmmakers Jeff Krulik and John Heyn created an underground sensation in 1986 when they turned their cameras on the stoned, half-dressed Judas Priest fans outside the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland.

The 17-minute result, "Heavy Metal Parking Lot," is now considered a classic document of rock history. Members of Nirvana were reportedly so in love with 'Parking Lot' they kept a copy on their tour bus.

To mark the new edition of the video, Krulik joins us on the HuffPost Weird News podcast.

Homeless Man Returns Lost Purse To Single Mom Who Has Cancer

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — A man living on the streets in central Pennsylvania has returned a lost purse containing nearly $400 to its owner — a single mother who is on welfare and battling brain cancer.

The man tells WJAC-TV (http://bit.ly/1LnrRQP ) on Thursday that he was sitting on a bench in State College waiting to go to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting when he saw the handbag.

He says he opened up the wallet and saw a public assistance debit card and knew the owner was struggling, too. He turned the purse over to a homeless shelter, which tracked down the woman.

The homeless man and the purse's owner met Thursday and exchanged hugs and smiles. The woman says her whole life is in the bag and she was grateful to have it back.
