The New York Giants-Dallas Cowboys rivalry is an intense one, capable of generating strong emotions from die-hard fans on both sides. But one New Jersey priest (and Giants fan) has allegedly taken things way too far.
According to NBC New York, Bergen County prosecutors say Father Kevin Carter pointed a functioning, Civil War-style musket at an 8-year-old boy on Sept. 13 because he was rooting for the Cowboys to beat the Giants in a game later that day.
"The young boy was apparently a fan of a particular football team, the priest was not. So perhaps we have indication it started out as that," Bergen County prosecutor John Molinelli told NBC.
In a press release, the prosecutors said that Mr. Carter asked to see the boy before mass in one of the rectory offices. The priest had the boy stand against the wall and pointed the long gun at him, indicating that he was going to shoot.
On Friday, Oct. 2, detectives found the musket, gun powder and ammunition in the priest's office. Carter was placed under arrest shortly thereafter.
Carter was charged with one count of fourth degree Aggravated Assault by Pointing a Firearm and one count of third degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child. The prosecutor's office set the bail at $15,000.
