GOP Congressman Looks Down On Protesters From Roof, Becomes Instant Meme

A GOP congressman became an instant meme after taking to the roof of his district office to photograph protesters on the street below.

Social media users drew instant comparisons between Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) and Michael Scott, the bungling boss from “The Office,” following Tuesday’s bizarre incident at his office in Vista.

There were conflicting reports as to why Issa decided to go up on the roof in the first place. The lawmaker himself said he’d “spent the morning talking with constituents gathered outside the office” before going up “to take a quick pic.”

His opponents, however, alleged that he scurried up onto the roof because he was “too afraid” to speak with the protesters below.

Constituents have been holding weekly rallies to voice concerns over President Donald Trump’s immigration and health care policies, according to NBC San Diego. Here’s a sampling of the best responses so far:

Squatty Potty Dumps Kathy Griffin Over Beheaded Donald Trump Picture

Squatty Potty has pulled commercials featuring Kathy Griffin after a backlash over a snap of the comedian posing with a bloody mask depicting President Donald Trump’s decapitated head.

CEO Bobby Edwards confirmed Wednesday that the Utah toilet company had suspended its ad campaign in which Griffin starred.

We were shocked and disappointed to learn about the image Ms. Griffin shared today, it was deeply inappropriate and runs contrary to the core values our company stands for,” Edwards said in a press release.

“In response, Squatty Potty has suspended its ad campaign featuring Ms. Griffin,” added Edwards, whose foot stool product allows users to elevate themselves while on the toilet.

It appeared on “Shark Tank” in 2014. The company has also gained fame through its unicorn rainbow commercial.

“We have acted swiftly and decisively to demonstrate our commitment to a culture of decency, civility, and tolerance,” Edwards said.

Griffin has since apologized for the photograph, which celebrity photographer Tyler Shields snapped and released Tuesday.

In a video she posted to Twitter, Griffin said she “went way too far” and acknowledged that the image was “too disturbing.”

“I understand how it offends people. It wasn’t funny. I get it,” she added.

Donald Trump Asks World Leaders To Call Him On His Cell Phone. That Can Only Mean 1 Thing.

President Donald Trump is being gleefully mocked over his latest reported request to world leaders.

On Tuesday, The Associated Press reported that Trump was encouraging his global counterparts to call him directly on his cell phone if they wanted to talk to him.

Twitter users were initially keen to point out the problems it could pose:

Many, however, used the opportunity to poke fun at Trump, suggest he was channeling Canadian rapper Drake, who sings the line “call me on my cell phone” in his 2015 track “Hotline Bling.”

Some also referenced Trump’s parody performance of the song on “Saturday Night Live” in 2015:

Others thought Trump might have been listening to too much Carly Rae Jepsen’s 2012 hit “Call Me Maybe”:

And these tweeters just imagined how the leaders would use the number:

12-Year-Old Ventriloquist Blows Away 'America's Got Talent'

Before performing on Tuesday’s “America’s Got Talent,” a nervous and giggly Darci Lynne Farmer told the judges that she “would really like to keep ventriloquism alive because it’s not common, you know?”

The 12-year-old from Oklahoma City then did her part in a big way. As Farmer provided the skillfully hidden vocals, her puppet rabbit Petunia belted out a dazzling “Summertime.” The duo earned wows from the panelists and host Tyra Banks (making her “AGT” debut) before Mel B. pushed the Golden Buzzer to vault Farmer into the live show round.

A well-deserved happy ending.

Flight Attendant Gives 'Despacito' The Sky High Remix It Deserves

A flight attendant from Spain is on cloud nine after his reworked version of “Despacito” went viral.

Javier Otero, a steward for low-cost Irish airline Ryanair, sang his interpretation of the Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber smash hit over the intercom during a flight from Gran Canaria to Seville last week.

Video of his passionate performance, in which he changed the song’s lyrics and title to “Dos Euritos” (two little Euros) to promote the sale of scratch-off tickets, was shared to Facebook on Saturday:

The video also features Spanish former Arsenal and Atlético Madrid soccer player José Antonio Reyes clapping Otero on. It had garnered more than 4 million views by early Wednesday.

I am the one who does the public announcements,” Otero, from the southwestern city of Cadiz, told BuzzFeed España. “And I like to do them my way, with a little grace, so that they are not boring, since in Ryanair they give me a freedom that other airlines do not give its workers,”

2017 Is So Ridiculous, Real Words Can't Describe It Anymore

The past year in language has been closely tied to the speech patterns of the current president. If Donald Trump lambastes “bad hombres” or describes something as “bigly,” people rush in droves to look up the words or mock his vocabulary on Twitter. Other language kerfuffles have surrounded his eccentric use of punctuation and his haphazard spelling, which Merriam-Webster patiently continues to correct for him.

On Tuesday night, Trump took to Twitter, but this time he had no ordinary misspelling in store. “Despite the constant negative press covfefe,” he wrote in a now-deleted tweet that remained up for several hours and sparked an almost giddy reaction from Twitter users.

Observers have previously commented on the president’s relatively limited working vocabulary; he often resorts to favorite modifiers, like “bigly” (or “big league”) and all-purpose insults. He calls terrorists and political opponents alike “losers.” His preferred terms have been carefully observed, defined and discussed for the nation over the past year.

Despite that, he’s managed to make news once again for his diction ― and this time, it was likely just a typo.

Trump himself embraced the furor (likely a welcome distraction from reports that he plans to pull out of the Paris Climate Accord):

Merriam-Webster, for once, took a pass on the assignment:

The cool thing about language is its plasticity. Groups of people are quick to assign meaning to new words or to expand what a word signifies. All that is to say that “covfefe” already has an Urban Dictionary entry, and it’s pretty on point:

Not sure that’s what President Trump had in mind. Unlike his previous boast that he invented “prime the pump,” he did, in a way, coin the term “covfefe.” It’s a far cry from the neologisms created by William Shakespeare, John Milton and other creative linguists, to be clear ― they created intentionally, typically using building blocks from existing language to craft meaningful new terms. Given Trump’s later tweet, it seems clear that he did not tweet “covfefe” on purpose and has no idea what it should mean.

Now that it’s happened, this epic typo seems like an inevitable step in this presidency’s effect on language. First we’re gripped by the simplicity of his language, then his frequent inability to spell it, and now we dedicate hours to finding a use for a nonsense cluster of letters.

Language matters ― in politics, in diplomacy, and, of course, in all interpersonal relations. In a time when it seems many long-established norms of how we operate politically, how we ensure international peace and cooperation, and how we treat other people no longer apply, it’s little wonder that a carelessly made-up word, with no long-established meaning, becomes a touchstone. Real words don’t seem to matter anymore either, or not in a way that makes sense.

The 5 Hot Takes You Need To Unpack Trump's 'Covfefe' Tweet

Many people have have been doing their best code-cracking impression of “The Imitation Game” ever since President Donald Trump tweeted about “negative press covfefe” early Wednesday morning. Seriously, what does it mean?

Typo? Probably. Nuclear code?! Hopefully not.

Here’s how it all started:

Fortunately, commentators across the media sphere were ready to sort it out. Here are five hot “covfefe” takes to help you through the confusion.

  • CNN’s Chris Cillizza quickly asserted that “‘covfefe’ tells you all you need to know about Donald Trump.” He says that the President’s “lack of discipline reveals that there is simply no one who can tell Trump ‘no.’ Or at least no one whom he will listen to.”

  • The New York Times took a more cerebral approach, pondering with every passing moment just how long the tweet would avoid deletion. One does wonder: “Had the president’s lawyers, so eager to curb his stream-of-consciousness missives, tackled the commander in chief under the cover of night?”

  • Like many outlets, and bookish people generally, USA Today headed over to the old dictionary. Rookie mistake, of course. Merriam-Webster, although snarky as always, just doesn’t have the answer.

  • Naturally, folks on Twitter jumped on “covfefe” like it was the last typo the internet would ever know. Here at HuffPost, we rounded up the finest quips from people just trying to make sense of it all.

  • And, finally, New York Magazine’s Daily Intelligencer blog found those loyal Trump supporters who know that “‘Covfefe’ Is Just Another Way He’s Making America Great Again.” Very impressive, if true.

In summary, nobody knows. Except for, just maybe, one man:

People Are Going Nuts Over This Video Of A Newborn Baby 'Walking'

A mega-viral video circulating on Facebook appears to show a baby “walking” just after birth.

On May 25, Facebook user Arlete Arantes posted a video of a newborn baby girl in Brazil moving her legs forward as if to take steps while a medical professional holds her up.

In the video, you can hear exclamations of “Oh my gosh, the girl is walking. Good gracious!” according to The Sun’s translation. “Merciful father. I was trying to wash her here and she keeps getting up to walk.”

The video has been viewed over 90 million times.

Though many have hailed the “walking” baby as “miraculous,” scientists were quick to point out that this behavior is actually somewhat normal. It’s part of a set of involuntary movements called “newborn reflexes.”

According to Stanford Children’s Health, “Some movements are spontaneous, occurring as part of the baby’s usual activity,” while others come in response to specific actions. The healthcare network’s website explains, “Reflexes help identify normal brain and nerve activity. Some reflexes occur only in specific periods of development.”

The “step reflex” is one type of newborn reflex. As the Stanford Children’s Health website notes, “This reflex is also called the walking or dance reflex because a baby appears to take steps or dance when held upright with his or her feet touching a solid surface.”

Other reflexes include the suck reflex, grasp reflex and tonic neck reflex.

Ukraine Water Main Explosion Looks Like It Belongs In A Disaster Movie

It might have looked like a Hollywood-style explosion, but this blockbuster was real.

A water main break in Kiev, Ukraine, caused the street to rise and erupt on Monday, unleashing debris and a river of muddy water.

A few cars and windows were damaged, but it appears the impact could easily have taken a more serious toll. No injuries were reported, according to the BBC.

It’s not clear what caused the rupture, the Telegraph reported. However, other reports said the pipe, which had not been in use for decades, exploded around the time officials carried out tests on the water-delivery system.

The blast carved a 64-foot crater in the street.

7-Foot-Long Alligator Makes A Splash In Family's Pool

When in Florida, remember to check the pool before diving in.

That’s what local law enforcement officials are advising after pulling an estimated 7- to 8-foot-long alligator from the bottom of a Venice family’s swimming pool on Monday.

The massive gator was filmed putting up a fight as it was hauled out of the water and onto the pool deck, video shared by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office shows.

The family was fortunately not home at the time of the discovery, which was made by a pool cleaner, authorities said.

“Can he pull you in?” a man is heard asking in the video as the gator is seen being dragged through the water and towards the steps.

“Oh yeah, he can pull you in easily,” another man, believed to be the trapper, answers.

After hauling the animal out of the water, the trapper helped relocate the gator to a safer and more “appropriate” location, the sheriff’s department said.

“Let this be a reminder that it’s mating season in Florida and these creatures, especially the females, are on the move looking for areas to lay eggs,” the sheriff’s department’s Facebook post states. “With that said, it’s probably safe to assume that any body of water, regardless of what kind, may be enticing to this kind of reptile.”

Why This Girl Opened A New Toy -- And Found A Pregnancy Test Instead

A new video from Save The Children is bringing attention to the alarming reality of underage pregnancy worldwide.

Released on Wednesday, the video features a young girl unboxing what she thinks is a new doll ― and finding a pregnancy test instead.

“I don’t know what this is,” the girl says, pulling out the test. “It says pregnant, not pregnant.”

“Every two seconds, a girl around the world gives birth,” she reads off a card in the box.

“Girls can have babies?” she asks.

The girl’s reaction in the video was not staged, according to the group.

Around 16 million girls ages 15 to 19 give birth each year around the world, according to a new report from Save The Children ― while 1 million girls under age 15 do so.

That means a girl age 19 or under gives birth every two seconds.

While the rate of very young mothers (under age 15) seems to be declining worldwide, according to the report, childbirth among older teens (ages 15 to 17) has remained steady.

The report ranks 172 countries on how well they provide children with safe, secure and healthy childhoods, factoring in issues like early pregnancy, extreme violence and child labor

The U.S. comes in 36th ― behind Bosnia (35), Qatar (34) and Poland (26) ― and far behind leaders like Norway (1) and Germany (10).

“When a girl gets pregnant, her childhood ends,” a line in the video says.

When a girl gets pregnant, her childhood ends.
Save The Children

Teen moms disproportionately live in rural, poor areas and have low levels of education, according to the United Nations. They often end up dropping out of school and face heightened health risks. Each year, around 70,000 girls ages 10 to 19 die from pregnancy or childbirth complications.

“Going to school pregnant made me an outcast,” former teen mom Breanne, who became pregnant at 15, says in Save The Children’s report. “You have to grow up fast because you’re responsible for a little life.”

In 2015 in the U.S., around 1 in 45 girls ages 15 to 19 had a baby, according to the report.

Although the adolescent birth rate in the United States has dropped by more than 60 percent in the past 25 years, it is still higher than that of most developed nations ― more than twice the rate of France, and five times that of Japan.

Teen pregnancy also disproportionately affects young women of color. The vast majority of teen births ― 95 percent ― occur in developing regions, the report states, where populations are largely people of color.

And in the U.S., according to the CDC, the birth rate for Hispanic teens in 2015 was more than two times higher than for white teens; for black teens, it was almost twice as high as for white teens; and for Native teens, it was more than one and a half times higher than the white teen birth rate.

Asked why its video featured a white girl when far more young women of color are teen moms in the U.S. and around the world, Save The Children declined to comment on the record. This video is one of three the group released with its report on “Stolen Childhoods” ― the other two, on extreme violence and child labor, feature children of color.

Save The Children’s U.S. section of its report concludes by calling for Congress to fund programs that support healthy and secure childhoods, from early childhood education to maternal and infant home visits.

President Donald Trump has proposed several policies that affect girls and women’s access to reproductive health care worldwide, placing more girls at risk of early pregnancy.

Earlier this year, Trump signed an executive order reinstating the global gag rule, which blocks U.S. funding to international nonprofits that provide or advise on family planning and reproductive health services if these include abortion.

Last week, Trump proposed a budget that would cut federal funding to Planned Parenthood, which provides contraceptives and other reproductive health care to women. This week, the administration is expected to roll back a federal rule that requires employers to cover birth control in health insurance plans at no cost to women, replacing it with a new rule that has alarmed civil liberties organizations and progressive advocacy groups.

British Soldier Runs 'A Whey' With Cheese Rolling Championship

Competitors risked injury and ridicule as they flung themselves down a steep incline after a nine-pound wheel of cheese in the English county of Gloucestershire.

The Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling challenge, which dates back to 1826, sees chasers slip and slide down the muddy 200-yard (180-metre) track in pursuit of a large wheel of double Gloucester cheese, which can reach speeds of up to 70 miles per hour.

Thousands of spectators lined up around the hill in Brockworth on a rainy Monday to enjoy the chaotic spectacle, which always results in numerous bumps, bruises and concussions.

Local soldier Chris Anderson, 29, won the men’s race and 18-year-old Keavy Morgan took the women’s title. Both took home the large cheeses as trophies.

“The wet weather has made it particularly tough,” Anderson, a multiple winner of the event, told the Gloucester News.

This Artist Will Draw Your Portrait If You Share Your Darkest Secret

Philippines-based illustrator Terence Eduarte takes the kind of secrets people would be wary to tell their closest friends and illustrates them for the whole Internet to see.

The art project ― called 100 Days of Secrets ― started two months ago, when the 24-year-old artist asked his friends to share their secrets in exchange for a portrait. Since then, he’s received secret submissions from Instagram followers from around the world.

The resulting works explore complicated, knotty personal issues, from learning of a parent’s extramarital affair:

To confessions about catfishing:

In an interview with HuffPost, Eduarte said he was taken aback by strangers’ willingness to open up to him.

“I think the project has become an outlet for people to let out thoughts and feelings they normally wouldn’t tell anyone,” he said.

"I know what it's like to be the other woman. And it has happened more than once." #100daysofsecrets #the100dayproject

A post shared by Terence Eduarte (@trnz.eduarte) on

Some people tell Eduarte they’re just thankful to have a sounding board for their secrets, regardless of the portrait.

“A lot of people who have written to me said they really didn’t mind if I’m not able to include them in the project,” he said. “They just wanted to share their burden with someone.”

Police Escort Drunk Man Home, Tuck Him In Bed And Take A Selfie

Reece Park, a man living in Tasmania, got so drunk on Sunday night that he couldn’t remember how he got home.

But a photo he found on his cell phone the next morning left a pretty interesting clue.

The photo, which Park posted to Facebook and was shared by Tasmanian Police, featured two cops taking a selfie with Park in the background, doing the “hang ten” gesture in bed.

Park’s caption reads:

“So was just looking through my phone and turns out these good ***** took some banger selfies after they took my drunk ass home! Bloody legends.”

Constable Jeremy Blyth told Yahoo 7 News in Australia that he and fellow officer Natalie Siggins found Park in the back of a taxi after the company called the police for assistance. Blyth said that Park “didn’t know where he lived, he wasn’t saying much.”

Eventually the officers figured out where he lived and took him home.

“Because he was a bit worse for wear, our officers took the opportunity to record the moment with a selfie in the likely event he could not remember how he got home,” Senior Sergeant Craig Fox said in the Tasmanian Police’s Facebook post.

Blyth and Siggins also waited for a friend to come by Park’s house before they left to keep an eye on him.

Siggins said taxi companies occasionally call the police to assist with riders who are too inebriated to get home, but it’s part of the job.

“People’s friends put them in taxis thinking they’ll get home safe,” she told Yahoo. “But unfortunately they end up like Reece, asleep in the backseat, not able to get themselves all the way home.”

Fox advised that people make a plan before they drink.

“Then there’s no risk to you, your family, friends or others on the road,” he said on Facebook.

As for Park, the experience hasn’t exactly deterred him from getting completely tanked in the future.

When asked by Yahoo if this has sworn him off booze, he responded with, “Don’t know. I’ll soon find out, I reckon.”

Pitbull's Tasteless Memorial Day Tweet Brings Americans Together

Rapper Pitbull managed to do the impossible: He brought together a polarized America on Memorial Day.

However, it wasn’t intentional.

It all started when Mr. Worldwide sent out a tweet honoring America’s fallen soldiers, a tweet that seemed more designed to celebrate himself.

Since it’s generally considered bad form to honor America’s fallen soldiers by Photoshopping yourself over the Stars and Stripes, Twitter users opened fire on him (metaphorically speaking).

Some stated the obvious.

Some felt compelled to thank Pitbull, but in a backhanded way.

Some just couldn’t deal.

Others theorized on if there was anything Pitbull might have done to make the self-aggrandizing tweet a teeny bit less offensive.

Others just stated the obvious.

Some people predicted this tweet might be part of a series.

Others recognized the connection between commerce and faux-patriotism.

If Pitbull has any regrets about making Memorial Day about himself, he’s keeping mum. The singer has not apologized nor removed the tweet.
