An attempt to break the record for most Easter eggs in a single hunt turned into a chaotic mess in Sacramento on Sunday, according to the Sacramento Bee.
Thousands turned out to California's capitol grounds to search for 510,000 Easter eggs. It may have been the largest hunt ever, but it failed to break the record due to a technicality.
The event was a fundraiser for Blue Heart, a new organization that raises money for human trafficking victims.
Instead of waiting for the official start of the hunt, many children and adults rushed onto the field as soon as the eggs were put down.
"It’s really ridiculous,” parent Michelle Rodriguez told the paper. “Parents are literally pushing other people out of the way.”
Fellow parent Tessa Moon expressed similar sentiments to CBS Sacramento.
“There was no organization at all, they all trampled each other. Little two and three year olds were crying," Moon said. "The parents were scooping up all of the eggs for their kids and it was horrible.”
The hunt didn't break the record because the eggs arrived just two days before the event. Guinness World Records requires that they arrive three days before in order to get officially certified.
