Little Wild Boar Finds New Family With Herd Of Cattle

BERLIN (AP) — A wild pig in Germany has decided to give up its "boaring" life — leaving the forest to live with a small herd of cattle.

Farmer Dirk Reese told the dpa news agency Monday the boar, which he nicknamed "Banana," has been living with the eight cattle for more than two months on his property north of Hamburg, not far from the Danish border.

Reese says Banana has been effectively adopted by the cattle — "He's fully integrated into the herd, which is fascinating."

Reese says Banana has achieved something of a celebrity status in the area, so he's not worried that the boar's life in an open pasture might make it easy prey for a local hunter.

He says that "this pig has a special status."

'Stormscapes 3' Shows The Stunning Power Of Nature In Ultra-HD

Severe weather has never looked so good.

"Stormscapes 3," the newest ultra-HD time-lapse weather video from Nicolaus Wegner, shows both the beauty and the ferocity of nature. The clip features supercells and other rotating systems, a tornado, daytime cloud formations and nighttime storms.

There's also crepuscular rays, rainbows and plenty of lightning -- so much lightning that the video comes with a warning:

"If you suffer from any negative photosensitive reactions to strobing or flashing lights, it might be advisable to skip the night focused lightning sequences of Stormscapes 3. They are...intense...welcome to mother nature's dance party (it's even crazier in person). The last two minutes are almost nothing but lightning sequences. Stop watching immediately if it becomes too much for you."

Check it out in the clip above (unless you have negative photosensitive reactions).

For more incredible weather footage, take a look at Wegner's "Stormscapes" and "Stormscapes 2."

Coke Ad Shows Hipsters Bringing Soda To Indigenous Mexicans

Coca-Cola has apologized for an ad in Mexico that features urban youths visiting the nation's indigenous people... to bring them soda.

The video shows sad faces of indigenous people with stats about how they feel rejected for not speaking Spanish, followed by happy youths shouting and creating something in the familiar red and white colors of Coke.

“This Christmas a group of young people decided to give something very special to the indigenous community of Totontepec in Oaxaca," the opening lines of the video say in Spanish, according to Tech Insider.

The "something very special" turned out to be a giant lighted Christmas-tree-like Coke display in the middle of the indigenous village -- and, of course, plenty of bottles of soda being passed around.

The video was roundly panned, with an analysis on the teleSUR website calling it "a painful metaphor of ongoing colonialism in the country: white kids storm the Mixe Indigenous community, as if a crusade, distribute coke bottles and build a giant Coca-Cola Christmas tree for all to idolize."

"I consider this type of advertising an act of discrimination and racist," said indigenous lawyer Elvira Pablo, according to Mashable. "It also promotes the breakdown of the social fabric by trying to impose a consumer culture alien to this community."

The ad also came under fire on Twitter:

Coke pulled the ad and apologized.

"Our intention was never to be insensitive to or underestimate any indigenous group," the company said in a statement, according to Latino USA. "We have now removed the video and apologize to anyone who may have been offended."

Coke's apology may not be enough. The Global Post reports that Mexico's Alliance for Food Health is filing a complaint over the ad with the National Council for the Prevention of Discrimination.

One Direction Beat Obama To Top Spot In 2015 Twitter Charts

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Messages of love and gratitude shared by the boy band One Direction topped Twitter's charts this year, eclipsing President Barack Obama's celebration of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision legalizing gay marriage.

One Direction members accounted for half of the 10 most recirculated tweets, including the three most popular.

All the One Direction tweets were either directed at bandmates or the group's fans. None are likely to be remembered for heralding pivotal moments in history.

"All the love as always. H," One Direction's Harry Styles tweeted in March after Zayn Malik announced plans to leave the group.

Styles boasts 26.3 million Twitter followers. The band's other current and former members have amassed between 16.6 million and 23.7 million followers apiece.

Obama nabbed the fourth spot in the Twitter rankings released Monday with a June 26 tweet that hailed the Supreme Court's ruling on gay marriage as "a big step in our march toward equality."

Other tweets in Twitter's Top 10 came from Saudi Arabia King Salman after his crowning, hip hop personality Kayne West calling for people to do everything they can, actor Leonard Nimoy philosophizing five days before his death and Caitlyn Jenner introducing herself after her transition from one-time Olympic decathlon champion Bruce Jenner.

Twitter also released some of the most popular topics, denoted by hashtags, that resonated with the more than 300 million users of its short-messaging service.

The list included #JeSuisParis after last month's terrorist attack in France, #BlackLivesMatter after police shootings of African-Americans in several U.S. cities, #LoveWins after the Supreme Court's ruling on gay marriage and #RefugeesWelcome as people fled the Middle East for Europe.

Although Twitter Inc. has built a big audience, Facebook's social network is five times larger. A list about what people were talking about on Facebook this year is expected to be released soon, too.

Ancient Etruscan Tomb Found 'Undisturbed' In Italy

An intact 2,300-year-old Etruscan tomb recently discovered in Italy may help shed light on an ancient civilization that flourished centuries before the rise of the Roman Empire.

The tomb, found in a field near Città della Pieve, about 30 miles southwest of Perugia, had been partially buried in a landslide, according to local news outlet Perugia Today.

Inside, archaeologists have found a number of artifacts including urns and a marble head, as well as two sarcophagi:

A worker had been plowing the field above the tomb in October when the machine jammed, leading to the spectacular find, according to Italian news outlet Umbria24, which says the tomb is at the end of a corridor 40 feet deep.

"It was a totally unexpected discovery," Clarita Natalini of the archaeological superintendency of Umbria told Discovery News. "The area is away from the sites visited by tomb robbers and indeed the burial is undisturbed."

She said one of the sarcophagi has the name "Laris" on it.

The other also contains an inscription but was damaged, apparently long ago.

A marble head found in the tomb had been broken off at the neck.

"It portrays the beautiful face of a young man," Natalini told Discovery. "We do not know yet its meaning. Perhaps it was part of a statue that honored one of the deceased."

The Etruscans have long been considered enigmatic by historians because little is known about their origins and even their language, which is not related to the Indo-European languages in the region.

However, discoveries in recent years have helped shed light on the civilization. For example, a 2013 study traced the origins of French winemaking to the Etruscans at around 525 BC.

The new discovery could help scientists learn even more, and local officials say other discoveries could be waiting in the area. Umbria24 reports that researchers may use ground-penetrating radar to scan for other hidden tombs.

Going To A National Park Anytime Soon? Don't Be A Dummy About It.

Yellowstone is having a moment.

America's oldest national park has shattered visitation records this year. More than 4 million people are expected to trundle through the caldera, check out Old Faithful and gawk at herds of bison. Nat Geo WILD has filmed a stunning new feature on the park entitled "Wild Yellowstone" in celebration of the National Park Service's 100th birthday next year.

It's an encouraging thing that so many would choose to spend time exploring one of America's wildest places.

But despite the love, you can't really help but notice the signs plastered over all of the rest stops, parking lots and hot springs around the park for the dummies among us. Take a gander at this one, for example.

"Hot Water Will Scald." This sign, complete with a don't-stick-your-finger-in-said-hot-water graphic, is staked into the ground near several hot springs and mud pots, two of Yellowstone's famous geothermal features. The water in these springs can exceed the boiling point and several of the pools have walkways that extend either directly over the hydrothermal areas or within touching distance.

Aside from the fact that humans could disrupt the delicate limestone formations that make up the pools, the temperature of the water could severely burn a would-be tester in seconds.

Other signs warn visitors against other commonsense mistakes, like feeding wildlife. While your grandparents may have fed a marshmallow to a bear back in the '60s, the practice is now an illegal, citable offense than can land you with a hefty fine. Animals can easily become habituated to humans and either depend on them for food, losing some of their ability to hunt, or perilously injure a visitor in a scramble for a hot dog.

At least a half-dozen people have been injured by bison at Yellowstone this year, many while trying to take a photo. Aside from the fact that bison can run three times faster than a human, the thousand-pound behemoths have horns that can gore easily.

All of these terribly obvious warnings have real-life stories behind them. Several people have died in Yellowstone since the park's founding. Those fatal encounters were chronicled in a book in the early '90s called Death in Yellowstone, which reminds readers that the park is not Disneyland.

If you want to keep our wild places wild and your limbs intact, here are a few rules to follow should you take a jaunt over to one of the country's 59 national parks:

  • Stay 100 yards away from bears and wolves and at least 25 yards away from other large animals.

  • If you see a threatening animal like a bear, do not run away. Slowly back away, use bear spray if necessary (which you're required to carry in some areas) and immediately report any sightings to a park ranger.

  • Do not feed the wildlife.

  • Avoid contact with geothermal features that steam, spout, spew or hiss. They are hot and they will burn you. Even if something doesn't look warm, it very well could be.

  • Use common sense judgement and don't stray off guided paths and walkways.

  • And mind posted signs and placards.

So, please, if you choose to head to Yellowstone yourself, do so with some common sense. These are wild animals in wild places with inherent danger -- put away the selfie sticks and let yourself be awed.

NSFW Yule Log Reminds You Of Every Christmas Argument You've Had

Christmas is a time for giving, sharing and -- let's be honest -- the occasional argument.

And this hilarious NSFW parody Yule Log video posted to YouTube tells it exactly how it is.

The crackling sound of the cosy fire and seasonally-themed jazz music are repeatedly interrupted by a bickering married couple.

The husband and wife, who we never see, argue over everything from how high the ornaments should go on the tree to the fact they're running out of ice.

Curse words and the F-bomb are launched at each other, especially when the woman questions how much alcohol her partner is drinking.

YouTube user sjshock posted the 57 minute clip online on Nov. 27. It's not known where the producers are from. But it appears to have touched a nerve with viewers, with one dubbing it as "the most Christmassy thing I've ever seen."

Actor and comedian Nick Offerman this year offers up an alternative Yule Log video, where he sits next to a fireplace sipping scotch as part of a Lagavulin promotion.

Marijuana Warehouse Found Near Police Dog Training Center: Cops

VIENNA (AP) — Vienna police say they have discovered a plantation with more than 700 marijuana plants at a warehouse close to a police dog center.

Police say one of their dogs caught a whiff of the plants in the Austrian capital's Floridsdorf district on Friday morning. Officers then saw a man taking a hose into the warehouse and searched the premises, finding 734 cannabis plants.

They said in a statement Saturday they also found 32 sacks stuffed with deep-frozen marijuana and a bag full of dried marijuana at the 27-year-old suspect's apartment.

Police say the man is denying wrongdoing. Spokesman Roman Hahslinger told the Austria Press Agency the suspect comes from outside Vienna and might not have known that a police facility was nearby.

This 'Stop Wars' Street Art Will Make You Love Yoda Even More

Excited about this street art, we are.

Yoda, famed for training up Jedi for combat in the Star Wars epic, has been turned into a multi-colored peace activist for this new mural in Miami.

The Grand Jedi Master is pictured carrying a placard that simply reads, "Stop Wars" in the font of the franchise.

Eduardo Kobra, from Brazil, is behind the new piece in the Wynwood art district, according to Mashable.

Well known for his bold and brightly colored kaleidoscopic themed work, he posted the image on his Instagram and Facebook pages Thursday.

It's the latest in a long line of gigantic murals from the artist.

Martin Luther King Jr., the Dalai Lama, Formula One racing driver Ayrton Senna, Albert Einstein and Tupac Shakur are just some of the portraits he's painted.

In 2013 he paid tribute, with four other artists, to the recently deceased architect Oscar Niemeyer, from Brazil, by covering the entire side of a Sao Paulo skyscraper with an image of his face.

He's also recreated the VJ Day kiss in Times Square, New York, in street art form on 25th Street at 10th Avenue in Chelsea.

Kobra's social media profiles and website are filled with stunning examples of his work, including this time-lapse video of him painting Abraham Lincoln on Water Street in Lexington, Kentucky, in 2012:

The Force is indeed strong with this one.

Bubble Wrap Bangs Send Air Force Base Into Lock Down

Popping bubble wrap sent an entire Air Force base in New Mexico into lock down Wednesday, after it was mistaken for gunfire.

A civilian employee dialed 911 after hearing three loud bangs at Kirtland Air Force base in Albuquerque at 2:30 p.m., according to multiple reports.

Base chiefs feared an active shooter was on the loose, reports KOB4.

It came just after Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik stormed a party at a social services facility in San Bernardino, California. They slaughtered 14 people and wounded another 21.

The Air Force base, its VA Hospital and three elementary schools were all placed on lock down until 3:15 p.m., according to NBC News.

The high alert was stood down, however, when security forces "could not substantiate the claims of gunfire," according to a statement obtained by KOB4.

Master Sgt. Phyllis Keith revealed Thursday someone had become spooked by the bubble wrap bangs and thought it was a weapon being discharged, reports KOAT.

Base spokesman Eric Elliott told The Albuquerque Journal the loud noise was caused by another civilian employee stepping on "heavy-duty" bubble wrap, which he said had "sandwich bag-size air pockets."

Despite the inconvenience caused by the lock down, Elliott added it was important to be precautionary -- and said, "We got a good exercise out of it."
