This Map Of Westeros Shows The European Equivalents Of The Seven Kingdoms

Caution: This post contains minor spoilers from "Game of Thrones" and "A Song of Ice and Fire.

Still reeling from Sunday's season 5 finale of "Game Of Thrones"? Understandable. It was brutal!

One mental exercise useful during every traumatic episode of the show or moment in George R.R. Martin's book series, "A Song of Ice and Fire," is to remind yourself that Westeros, and the people living there, are not real. It's all fiction! Nothing happening on the screen or page actually happened to a living human.

This is easy, of course, when there are dragons or White Walkers on screen. Yet Martin has made it clear that he did use historical events, people and places as the inspiration for some of his world.

With that in mind, we at The Huffington Post decided to play a fun little game: If Westeros did exist, what real world countries would correspond to each of the Seven Kingdoms?

This was not a completely straightforward exercise. One obvious question: Does Westeros represent Great Britain or Europe? It's shaped like Great Britain. (Or, more accurately, like a conglomeration of Great Britain and Ireland.) And it's right across a narrow straight of ocean from a much larger, more diverse continent, just like Great Britain.

Yet Martin has said that "Westeros is much much MUCH bigger than Britain. More the size (though not the shape, obviously) of South America, I'd say." And though all Seven Kingdoms share a language, the so-called Common Tongue, they're extremely diverse in terms of ancestry, history, culture and religion -- almost as diverse as Europe. So we decided to assume that Westeros is Europe, and go from there.

Another tricky issue has to do with history. Martin drew from the Middle Ages, broadly speaking, in limning out his fantastical world, but the Middle Ages lasted a long time. Between the fall of the Roman Empire and the discovery of the Americas, the various countries of Europe changed a great deal. And many of them didn't exist in anything like their modern form for much, or even any, of that period. So for simplicity's sake, we decided to refer to countries in terms that reflect modern-day boundaries, but also to pull from many different points in history when deciding what country to assign.

With no further ado, here's a map illustrating our findings; scroll down to find out the reasoning behind individual picks, arranged from south to north. But hey! This whole thing is totally subjective. So if you disagree with the countries we picked, say so in the comments!

*NOTE: HuffPost divided the map by houses, but technically the Seven Kingdoms are: The North, The Mountain and Vale, The Isles and Rivers, The Rock, The Reach, The Stormlands and Dorne.

Dorne = Spain

This one is pretty obvious: Martin has all but said that Dorne is Spain. The country's landscape is much drier and rockier than most of the rest of the continent. And the Dornish, like the Spanish, are descendants of people from multiple continents, who are noted, like Moorish Spaniards, for their liberality and tolerance. And their food is spicier and more exotic than most of the food in Westeros.

The Reach = France

The home of House Tyrell is, like France, a vast and fertile land, with a more pleasant climate than much of the rest of the country. It's home to an island called The Arbor that, like the French regions of Burgundy and Bordeaux, makes what is widely considered the best wine in the world. The city of Oldtown is the biggest and most sophisticated in Westeros, much as Paris was for some time the biggest and most sophisticated city in Europe. And the inhabitants of The Reach are invested in chivalry, art and culture to a significantly greater extent than those in the rest of Westeros. You could also argue that Margaery Tyrell is the closest thing Westeros has to its own Anne Boleyn -- who, though English by blood, was mostly raised in France.

The Stormlands = Wales

We actually don't know all that much about The Stormlands. Even though several scenes are set in or near Storm's End, the ancestral home of House Baratheon, we haven't gotten a glimpse of the rest of the kingdom. But we know that it's small, that the terrain is rough and green and that that weather tends toward the rainy. Much like Wales! There's also a royal connection: House Baratheon is (nominally) the ruling family of Westeros, and the heir to the throne of Great Britain and Northern Ireland goes by the title "The Prince of Wales."

King's Landing = London

I mean, duh, right? What else could it be?

The Westerlands = England

The most important fact about the geography of The Westerlands is that the land is very rich in gold. Its abundance is what made the Lannisters the wealthiest of the Great Houses. England doesn't exactly have that same reputation, though Ancient Romans did mine a significant amount of gold there. That said, the English, like the Lannisters, rose to power largely on the strength of their economy; that's what allowed them to become, for several hundred years, the most powerful country in the world. The Westerlands is also home to one of the great ports of Westeros, Lannisport, which makes the region more focused on maritime trade than some others. Further evidence can be found in the Lannisters' rivalry with the Tyrells and the Starks, which echoes England's historical rivalry with its southern neighbors in France and its northern neighbors in Scotland.

The Riverlands = Germany

Some have argued that the real-world analogue closest to the Riverlands is the Low Countries, on the basis of geography -- both are wet and lie between several more powerful lands. But the history doesn't match up at all. The people of the Riverlands are nothing like the trade-focused Dutch. And the equivalents of financial centers of Amsterdam and Antwerp are to be found in Essos, not Westeros.

What really marks the Riverlands is its lack of self-rule and the bloody battles that have been fought on its terrain. These are traits the region shares with the war-torn Germany of Medieval Europe. Germany was ravaged by the brutal Thirty Years War in much the same way that the Riverlands is ravaged by the War of the Five Kings. And just as Germany didn't really develop a real cohesive national identity until its unification by Kaiser Bismarck in the 19th century, The Riverlands wasn't actually one of the Seven Kingdoms; before Aegon's conquest of Europe, it was ruled by House Harren of the Iron Islands.

The Vale = Switzerland

The best evidence here is inherent in the geography: The Vale is home to the craggy Mountains of the Moon, which are the closest thing Westeros has to the Alps. In addition, the Knights of the Vale have, at least through the end of "A Dance with Dragons," taken no part in the wars that tore Westeros asunder after the death of King Robert -- it's been sort of a neutral territory. The Switzerland of the Middle Ages was, it must be said, hardly pacifistic, but the country is so well known for its neutrality today that it's hardly a stretch to suspect that Martin thought of it when he was developing the Vale.

The Iron Islands = Norway

We're not talking about the Norway of today, here -- the Iron Islands isn't a rich, peaceful country obsessed with Karl Ove Knausgaard. But Martin has said many times that the Ironborn, with their penchant for longships and raids, were inspired by the Vikings, who were based in Scandinavia. The rocky terrain of the Iron Islands is far closer to that of Norway, with its fjords and archipelagos, than to fertile Sweden or Denmark.

The North = Scotland

This one is implied by the position and shape of the North, which is oh-so-close to Scotland. The Northerners, like the Scottish, share many traits with their southern neighbors, but also have some crucial differences in terms of religion, culture and genetics. Just as Scottish culture is vivified by the region's ancient Celtic history, Northern culture is vivified by the region's descent from the First Men. The North also shares Scotland's independent streak, its historical disdain for outsiders and its cold weather.

The best evidence against the identification of The North and Scotland is the location of The Wall, which is clearly inspired by Hadrian's Wall between England and Scotland. That implies that Scotland is actually the part of Westeros beyond the wall. But Hadrian's Wall was built long before the Middle Ages, when Scotland was dominated by the relatively savage Picts. After the Norman Invasion, Scotland was quite closely tied with England; though it wasn't always ruled from London, neither is The North always ruled from King's Landing.

North Of The Wall = Greenland

The case for this one rests largely on geography; Greenland is as cold and vast as the lands North of the Wall, and just as mysterious to the people who live further south. Culturally, the people living beyond the Wall are so distant and backwards that they had little connection to the rest of Westeros. Just as Greenlanders had little connection to Europe in the Middle Ages. The analogy isn't perfect, of course: Greenland was settled by Vikings, and, as far as we know, the Wildlings are not descendants of the Ironborn. It also raises the question of the real-world equivalent of the White Walkers. Maybe polar bears?

UK Police Investigate Plane Stowaway As Another Man Found Dead On Rooftop

LONDON (AP) — A man is in critical condition in a London hospital after he was found stowed away in the undercarriage of a plane that had just completed a 10-hour flight, and police are investigating whether a man found dead on a west London rooftop had fallen from the same plane.

Authorities at Heathrow Airport found the man in the undercarriage of a British Airways plane after it landed Thursday morning on a flight from Johannesburg. Police say they believe they know his identity and that he is 24 but they are awaiting confirmation before they release any details. While there is no evidence to link the two cases, police say they are looking into whether there is a connection to the body found an hour later in the west London community of Richmond, which is below the flight path.

British Airways said it is working with police in London and Johannesburg to establish the facts in this "rare case."

Experts believe roughly three-quarters of stowaways do not survive if they hide on a plane's undercarriage because of the extreme cold and lack of oxygen they experience as the plane reaches cruising altitude. Though not common, stowaways have in the past plunged to the streets of west London as the planes lowered their landing gear.

In September 2012, a 30-year old from Mozambique, Jose Matada, died after falling from the undercarriage of a Heathrow-bound flight from Angola on to a street in Mortlake, which is not far from where the body was found Thursday.

An inquest into his death suggested he had survived freezing temperatures of up to minus 60 Celsius (minus 76 Fahrenheit for most of the 12-hour flight, but he was believed to be dead or nearly dead by the time he hit the ground.

Aviation expert Chris Yates described the latest situation as unusual because of enhanced security measures at airports meant to deter terror and other attacks. However, he noted that the stowaways who survive have tended to be young people.

The Rev. Neil Summers, from the St John the Divine of Richmond church across the way from where the body was found, said he would lead prayers for the dead man.

"In one sense it's not totally surprising as it's happened before," he said. "It's very shocking when it's so close to you. We are going to say prayers for the people concerned tonight."

In The Future, Your Interstellar Tourist Selfies Will Look Like This

selfie

Imagine a world some time in the semi-distant future where space travel is a banal indulgence not unlike a luxury cruise. What would you do upon stepping on Mars soil, an astronaut helmet over your head and Earth but a small speck in the distance.

Be real, would you take a selfie? It would get soooooo many likes.

tour

French photographer Julien Mauve juxtaposes the looming potential of space exploration with the stereotypical actions of earthly tourists in his narrative series "Greetings From Mars." The sci-fi photos combine alien landscapes with behavior that's all too familiar -- performing for the camera, inserting oneself into foreign landscapes, and striking a pose.

"I've been fascinated with Mars since I was a child," Mauve explained to The Huffington Post. "I can picture myself back in college making presentations about it. We hear a lot about NASA, Elon Musk and SpaceX these days. Mars One also, the company that offers people a one way ticket to establish the first human colony on Mars (and intend to create a TV show out of it). Space exploration and colonization is the greatest adventure of the century and the fact that we may witness it in our life-time makes it even more exciting."

boo

Mauve couples the possibility of space tourism in the future with the reality of social media influence in the present. "We've literally developed a new language to communicate emotions through pictures and that really fascinates me," the artist said, identifying smartphones as the technology that allows us to write our own stories in real time.

"In the mean time, Earth has become really small. We are only 12 hours and $800 away from the other side of the world. Those easy traveling conditions have made tourism a lucrative activity. People can visit and enjoy places we would have never imagined only 50 years ago... Once transportation issues will be solved and if we don't encounter any massive disaster, space tourism for middle class people is something we can imagine happening in less than 100 years."

fgg

Mauve's series offers a wonderfully deadpan view of the red planet, with anonymous explorers eager to survey the grounds, and, possibly more importantly, document the process. "It's an observation of our current behaviors and a projection of what we hope for the future," he explained. "I'm not trying to stick to the scientific truth."

Of his series, he explains the setting: "It's a couple experiencing Mars as tourists for the first time and sharing their experience through photographs. They include themselves in front of those landscapes and affirm their presence but the funny thing is that we don't see their faces. It could be anyone in those suits and, in fact, it goes against the original purpose of taking a selfie or souvenir pictures. It was also a way to illustrate this endless pursuit of self-definition we seek with pictures."

Check back with us in 100 years to see if Mauve's grim prediction has come to life. If so, please let us know what filters look best in space. Thanks.

Iggy Azalea And James Corden Sing Her Hits While Rocking Wedding Dresses

There may not be another rapper out there who gets as much heat on the Internet as Iggy Azalea, but on Thursday she proved, first things first, she is the realest.

During "Carpool Karaoke," Azalea opened up to James Corden about how she got her rap name, some of her wedding plans and she even revealed a famous bridesmaid, all while singing her hits such as "Fancy" and "Black Widow."

Corden's "Late Late Show" karaoke segment has become somewhat of a platform for misunderstood artists, with Justin Bieber and Mariah Carey already appearing on it, too.

But why does Azalea inspire so much hate? Whatever the reason, it's definitely not for rapping "Pretty Girls" while she and Corden rock wedding dresses. They're just so pretty!

"The Late Late Show with James Corden" airs weeknights at 12:37 a.m. ET on CBS.

Conservative Blogger Sues Gawker For $66 Million Over Public Pooping Rumors

What do you do when an irreverent liberal blog implies that you pooped on the floor in college? Sue for $66 million, of course.

The plaintiff in this odd complaint is the right-wing blogger and provocateur Charles "Chuck" Johnson, a not-very-credible journalist best known for crusading against "Jackie," the woman at the center of Rolling Stone's retracted campus rape story. Johnson also made a name for himself with hot takes like "Was Amtrak Train Engineer #BrandonBostian A Tranny Supporter?"

A draft of a lawsuit against Gawker appeared on document-sharing site Scribd Thursday, on the same day that Johnson reportedly posted on Facebook about his plans to sue. The suit was filed later in the day in St. Louis County Circuit Court, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Johnson's lawyer wouldn't tell the paper why the suit was filed there.

The Daily Caller has a screenshot from Johnson's private page, dated to 2:35 a.m. Thursday. In the post, Johnson says, "Today, I'm pleased to announce that we are suing them [Gawker] for libel."

Gawker Media's executive editor Tommy Craggs said that as of 8.20 p.m. Thursday, "we haven't gotten anything yet, and from what we can tell he hasn't formally filed." He didn't comment on the allegations in the complaint.

In the complaint, Johnson seeks at least $66 million for what he claims is damage caused by two Gawker articles and their attendant comments. The articles address rumors that Johnson defecated on the floor at some point during his time at Claremont McKenna College in California.

The lawsuit, embedded below, says that the first offending post was J.K. Trotter's Dec. 9 article "What Is Chuck Johnson, and Why? The Web’s Worst Journalist, Explained."

In the comments section of that post, an anonymous writer who claimed to have attended Claremont McKenna with Johnson said he was notorious among their classmates for "pooping on the (I think I'm remembering the floor right) 7th floor of Stark (a dorm)."

The second article -- Greg Howard's "Wait, Did Clowntroll Blogger Chuck Johnson Shit On The Floor One Time?," which appeared Dec. 9 on the Gawker site Deadspin -- doesn't say the anonymous comments are true. But in the comments section of his own article, Howard does say there is some "good-ass Kinja" -- a reference to Gawker's proprietary commenting tool -- on the subject of whether Johnson has maybe pooped where he shouldn't have. (Howard's post also includes a rebuttal from Johnson himself.)

The lawsuit claims that these posts "defamed, cast in a false light, and injured" Johnson.

Legal blogger Adam Steinbaugh deconstructed Johnson's complaint piece by piece, and deemed it an "absolutely frivolous" suit by a "nutty vexatious litigant."

Johnson has never been shy about confrontation, and he's shown that he's willing to get litigious. He had an attorney threaten legal action against Twitter earlier this year after the site permanently banned Johnson for making what appeared to be threats against a civil rights activist. His lawyer claimed Twitter was damaging Johnson's livelihood by denying him a platform for his beliefs.

In 2014, a judge ruled that Gawker was not responsible for defamatory content published by its commenters. However, Johnson's suit claims that Gawker's writers endorsed the defamatory comments by responding to them and using them in a later blog post.

You can check out the complaint below.

Sweet Baby Jesus! Beer Pulled From Grocery Store Shelves Over 'Offensive' Name

An Ohio grocery chain has pulled a popular beer from its shelves because of its controversial name.

Sweet Baby Jesus! is a chocolate and peanut butter porter by the Baltimore-based DuClaw Brewing Co. According to Fox News, Heinen’s, a grocery store chain based in Cleveland, recently decided to stop selling the beer after customers complained that the name was "offensive."

Heinen’s began selling the porter two months ago. The chain has 22 outlets in Ohio and Illinois.

“When you push boundaries and try to get one group excited about it, inevitably people are going to get upset on one side or the other,” Duclaw founder Dave Benfield told the Baltimore Business Journal. “[The name’s] not meant to be offensive, it’s not meant to be derogatory… “We liked the phrase [Sweet Baby Jesus!], which at least to us, is a phrase of excitement or astonishment.”

Benfield said this is the first time the beer has been pulled from a chain of stores. Complaints about the name, however, are not new.

Benfield told the Baltimore Sun the peanut butter porter has been removed from military bases in the past. But he noted that the beer often ends up being restocked after a few weeks.

"There's a lot more people who are upset they can't get it," Benfield said.

Sweet Baby Jesus! beer can still be found in several stores in Ohio. According to the Sun, DuClaw beer is currently distributed in eight states, mostly in the Mid-Atlantic.

This Guy Fell In Love With His Girlfriend In 5th Grade. This Is How He Proposed

New Jersey couple Sam Maccarone and Jessica Burzichelli go way, way back -- all the way to 5th grade.

With a history like that, Sam knew he needed to do something special when he finally popped the question to his longtime girlfriend. So in October 2014, he devised a plan with his filmmaker friend Dom Cucinotta and his musician cousin Matty Mac: tell Jess that they were looking for a couple to star in Matty's new "music video." She happily agreed, but little did she know what was actually in store.

"I always knew I wanted her to have something that would last forever," Sam told The Huffington Post. "And I knew no matter how I was going to do it I was going to have someone secretly there recording her reaction so we could have that forever."

They filmed most of the video at LOVE Park in Philadelphia and the final scenes at Nino Gervasi's Italian Restaurant in Paulsboro, New Jersey. Matty wrote the song, appropriately titled "The Proposal," specially for the occasion.

While they were filming in Philly, family and friends were at the restaurant, preparing to surprise Jess at the end of the day. During the last scene, Sam got down on bended knee and formally popped the question.

"You're the sweetest, sexiest, smartest person I know," he said. "And you're even pretty funny sometimes. You motivate me to be the best person I can be every day. And I want to spend every day with you for the rest of my life."

Naturally, Jess said, "Yes!"

"I was so nervous you can see in the video that I take a big gulp because I know this is the moment I was waiting for all day," Sam told HuffPost. "I had practiced what I was going to say over and over again, but when I got on my knee it was all forgotten and I just spoke from the heart. Her reaction was all I needed -- it was absolutely perfect and exactly how I wanted her to feel."

Remember: The Alamo Has An Official Cat

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The Alamo has a new official cat.

The Texas General Land Office on Thursday announced the calico kitty has the formal title Miss Isabella Francisca Veramendi de Valero. But she goes by Bella. The General Land Office oversees the state-owned landmark in San Antonio. Bella welcomes visitors and prowls for rodents.

The previous Alamo cat, who went by C.C. — for Mistress Clara Carmack — died last summer.

Bella was found roaming the grounds of the Presidio la Bahia in Goliad. An employee brought her to the Alamo.

Bella wears a tag that says, "I Belong At The Alamo." She's been seen on a cannon, playing near a computer keyboard and frolicking with workers.

Staffers care for and pay her expenses. Bella spends nights in an Alamo office.

Tiny Dog Speeds To Guinness Record On His Two Front Paws

Konjo is part Chihuahua and ALL speed demon.

The tiny pooch broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest dog on front paws. Konjo covered five meters in 2.39 seconds, shattering the old mark of 7.76 seconds by celebrity Pomeranian Jiff.

Konjo, from Tustin, California, set the record in December, but Guinness confirmed the record on Wednesday with a video featuring both Konjo and Jiff.

"Her smaller stature probably makes her more agile," Konjo's owner, Julia Pasternack, told Guinness.

Congrats, Konjo.

As for Jiff, he still owns the hind legs speed record. But on front paws, consider the gauntlet thrown, Jiff.

What Kids Really Think About Father's Day

Father's Day tends to bring a flood of heartfelt blog posts from parents and sweet dad-themed commercials from all sorts of brands.

But what do kids have to say about the holiday?

Comedian and YouTube personality Mark Malkoff interviewed some children about the dad-centric day, and their responses were predictably funny and adorable.

Highlights include the boy who claims his dad invented Father's Day and the girl who says she's going to give her father a trip to Disney World, paid for by him, of course.

102-Year-Old Doesn't Disappoint As World's Oldest Best Man

When asked to be best man at his friend's wedding, 102-year-old Dan Clements knew he would rise to the occasion, despite his age. "When he asked me to be his best man I said I would be delighted, and it went from there. I was quite happy to be asked," Clements, believed to be the world's oldest best man, told The West Briton.

Dan Clements and family friend, Heather Dodds.

Clements is a great-grandfather who has known the groom, Sandy Little, for most of his life. Little said, "I've known Dan for most of my life. There was no other choice for best man. It doesn't matter if he was 120 or 102, it had to be Dan."

And Clements certainly didn't disappoint. He organized a bachelor party that included a late night of drinking whisky shots -- but was otherwise tame. He even got kudos on his funny speech -- a must for any good best man. He says he last served as a best man in the 1940s.

The couple were married on Wednesday not far from where Clements lives -- which was a conscious decision made to ensure he'd be able to attend. They were hoping for a quiet wedding, but with the buzz surrounding Clements, it was anything but.

"We're not bothered about the record, it was only pointed out to us at the wedding that he was the oldest best man. It doesn't matter to us at all," Little said. A spokesperson for Guinness World Records tells The Huffington Post that they haven't yet received an application from Clements to be recognized for the record. Currently, the record goes to a 96-year-old UK man who was best man in a wedding early last year.

New York City Inmate Allegedly Tried To Escape Via 64 Bedsheets

NEW YORK (AP) — Investigators sweeping a jail after breaking up a drug smuggling ring uncovered an inmate's apparent escape plot using 64 neatly tied together bedsheets, enough for him to shimmy down 11 stories from his cellblock to the street, city officials said Thursday.

Ernest Murphy, awaiting trial on an attempted murder charge, had the sheets stashed under a sink in his cell at the Manhattan Detention Center, said Mark Peters, commissioner of the New York City Department of Investigation. The coil stretched the length of a gymnasium nearly four times. "Thankfully, it was discovered before he had an opportunity to test his skills at making a getaway," Peters said. "And so the city was spared the potential spectacle of joining the state for the past two weeks in a manhunt for escaped inmates."

Peters was referring to the massive search for convicted murderers David Sweat and Richard Matt, who authorities believe used power tools smuggled in by a worker at the maximum-security Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora to break through a wall, cut a hole through a pipe and vanish nearly two weeks ago.

Murphy, already jailed on allegations he participated in a gang assault where a man was slashed and shot, was arrested May 11 on a new charge of promoting prison contraband. He didn't confess to an escape attempt, but authorities said there's no other logical reason for the sheets. A message left with his lawyer wasn't immediately returned.

Peters and Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said the arrest came after a monthslong investigation into contraband smuggled inside and out of the jail, located next door to Manhattan Criminal Court and used mostly for holding prisoners ahead of court dates. An undercover officer posed as an inmate wanting to smuggle contraband, and the probe included wiretaps.

"We have all witnessed in recent weeks the serious consequences that can result when contraband is smuggled inside prison walls," Vance said.

City Correction officer Patricia Howard, 44, was arrested May 9 on a Harlem street in her uniform, holding a bag of contraband that included drugs, lighters and flashlights, and $800 — her cut of the operation, officials said. She is awaiting arraignment and it isn't immediately clear who represents her.

Howard has been a correction officer for nearly 20 years, and investigators said she had more than 2,400 calls to inmates during her tenure and even received a thank-you note from an inmate for supporting "the jail shopping network."

She walked into the jail with the contraband and then handed it over to inmate Tommy Davis, there on an attempted murder charge, who would disseminate it to other inmates in the jail, authorities said. Davis used his sister and niece to get the orders filled outside the jail, authorities said. The four were charged with crimes including promoting prison contraband, attempted sale of a controlled substance and bribery.

The search of prison cells also turned up a blade, a pen with a sharpened tip, marijuana and a scale for weighing drugs, officials said. The investigation continues.

Jeralean Talley, World's Oldest Person, Dies At 116 In Michigan

INKSTER, Mich. (AP) -- A 116-year-old woman deemed the world's oldest person has died in Michigan.

Jeralean Talley died Wednesday at her home in the Detroit suburb of Inkster. Her daughter, Thelma Holloway, confirmed the death. Holloway said Thursday her mother was recently hospitalized and treated for fluid in her lungs, but was grateful to return home, "just where she wanted to be."

Talley turned 116 last month. She celebrated at her church and a local office of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

The Gerontology Research Group considered Talley to be the world's oldest person, based on available records, followed by Susannah Jones of Brooklyn, New York. The group says Jones turns 116 in July.

Talley was born in Montrose, Georgia, in 1899. Her husband died in 1988, at age 95.

Cows More Likely To Kill You Than Sharks

Sharks are often considered one of humans' deadliest predators, but the data doesn't support that.

A study of animal-caused deaths in the US from 2001 to 2013 shows you're more likely to be killed by a cow than attacked by a shark.

Jeralean Talley, World's Oldest Person On Record, Dies At Age 116 In Her Michigan Home

Jeralean Talley, previously listed as the world's oldest living person, has died at the age of 116, according to friends and family.

Longtime friend Michael Kinloch told The Huffington Post that Talley died Wednesday at her home in Inkster, Michigan. Talley had been in the hospital for about a week due to heart problems, but came home over the weekend and spent her last days with her loved ones.

Talley's 77-year-old daughter, Thelma Holloway, told the Detroit News that her mother was "ready to go home and rest."

“When she left here, she didn’t suffer. She asked the Lord to take her peacefully and he did," Holloway told the paper. “Now she’s at peace.”

Talley celebrated her 116th birthday on May 23. Multiple parties were held, including one with a large crowd at her church in Inkster. Deeply religious, Talley credited God for her long, healthy life.

"She was a believer in Jesus Christ and she gave him all of the credit for her health, for her longevity and even for just bringing people into her life," said Kinloch, who met Talley through church about 25 years ago. "She lived her life according to what she thought God wanted her to do, and her motto was 'treat people like you want to be treated.'"

With age comes wisdom... Thank you for sharing your vast wisdom with me today. Happy 116th Birthday to Jeralean Talley, the world's oldest person.

Posted by Congressman John Conyers, Jr. on Thursday, May 21, 2015

Mother Talley, as she was often called, was born in 1899 in Montrose, Georgia, where she lived on a farm and picked cotton and peanuts, before she moved to Michigan in 1935.

The following year, she married Alfred Talley. They were together 52 years before he passed away.

Talley stayed active up until her death, enjoying playing with her great-great grandson. She had a fishing trip planned for this summer with Kinloch and his son Tyler, her godson. She initiated their annual fishing tradition in 1999, when Tyler was six years old.

"She'd literally bait her own hook," Kinloch said. "That's one of the things I know she really enjoyed."

Kinloch added that Talley still had all her mental faculties up until her death and noted her modesty and independent spirit.

"One of the things she had shared with me awhile ago, even though she's been getting all of this attention, she really didn't think she deserved it," Kinloch said. "She doesn't want people always doing things for her, because if that happens she'll lose [the] ability to do things for herself. She really always wanted to make sure there was something left for her to do."

Following the deaths of two older women in April, Talley became the oldest living person whose age has been documented, according to the Gerontology Research Group. Susannah Mushatt Jones of Brooklyn, New York is nearing her 116th birthday and is now the world's oldest living person on record.

You Can Now Bid On One Of Tom Brady's Deflated Balls, Which Starts At $25,000

Now you can own a piece of Deflategate history as one of the balls in question will be put up for auction.

Bidding for the ball starts at $25,000, and it's apparently the same one intercepted by Darrelle Revis in the third quarter of the Deflategate game against the Indianapolis Colts, and then used for a rushing touchdown.

The ball also goes up for auction (bidding closes July 17) just before Tom Brady's June 23 appeal of his four-game suspension, a result of the league's investigation into Deflategate.

The NFL also handed the Patriots a $1 million fine and the loss of a 2016 first-round draft pick, as well as a 2017 fourth-round pick.

San Francisco Is Using Sex To Sell Water Conservation

It’s been said that sex sells when it comes to everything from cars to clothes, but can it actually change consumer behavior when it comes to something as, well, unsexy as water conservation?

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission seems to think so. The commission announced earlier month that it will extend an unusual water conservation campaign, which it says was responsible for helping the city’s residents surpass usage-reduction goals in the drought-plagued state, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The campaign features a number of racy, double entendre-laden messages such as “Go full frontal,” “quick and easy” and “Short and steamy,” in an ad blitz that includes ads on billboards, buses and social media, plus television spots such as the clip below. The city is spending $300,000 on the latest campaign.

“This campaign worked,” Tyrone Jue, SFPUC communications director, told KPIX, CBS’ San Francisco affiliate. “We want to use the same provocative theme to get people involved and engaged again.”

But are the sultry ads really impacting water usage? Wesley Schultz, a California State University San Marcos psychology professor, told The Atlantic’s City Lab he was doubtful.

“The research is really consistent in showing that what you’ll get is raised awareness -- and that’s about it,” Schultz told City Lab.

As San Francisco has the lowest rate of water usage in the state of California, it appears many have gotten on board with the commission’s message.

Others across the nation say they would, too. A majority of respondents to a recent national Reuters/Ipsos poll agreed that they would support rules limiting the use of water to wash their vehicles and water lawns if they lived in a state experiencing drought conditions like what California and other states in the Western U.S. are currently enduring.

In April, California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) called for the state’s urban areas to cut their water consumption by 25 percent. Gov. Brown has further proposed fines of up to $10,000 per day for the worst-offending water-wasters.

Still, others have resisted the call to conserve. As the Washington Post reported Saturday, some wealthy residents of the state have been pushing back, with one Rancho Santa Fe resident telling the paper, “No, we’re not all equal when it comes to water.”

Man Drives Himself To Kentucky Police Station, Asks For DUI Arrest

HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Authorities say a man drove under the influence of alcohol to a small-town Kentucky police station, where he requested that officers arrest him.

The Kentucky New Era (http://bit.ly/1MNoFOI) reports that 26-year-old Christopher L. Stewart drove to Tuesday night to the station in Hopkinsville, near the Tennessee border, and slammed on his brakes, nearly hitting a police cruiser. The newspaper reports that Stewart approached officers and said he was ready to go to jail for DUI.

The paper says he told police he drank a pint before driving to the station. Police say Stewart also attempted to drink a closed bottle of fuel injector cleaning fluid, but officers stopped him.

He was charged with driving under the influence. It was unclear whether he had a lawyer to contact for comment on the case.

No, Human Breast Milk Is Not Some Kind Of Super Food For Adults

LONDON (Reuters) - A growing online craze among some fitness communities, fetishists and chronic disease sufferers for buying and drinking human breast milk poses serious health risks, British experts said on Thursday.

Writing in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, specialists said there was little evidence to support claims that the milk - traded via websites in a lucrative market for adult buyers - is some kind of super food that can boost health and fitness and ward off disease.

Claims that it even helps with erectile dysfunction and cancer have no clinical basis, they said. On the contrary, the experts warned, raw and unpasteurized human breast milk bought online can expose consumers to many serious infectious diseases, including hepatitis, HIV and syphilis.

It is also potentially very hazardous if used to replace a healthy balanced diet, Sarah Steele, a specialist at the global health and policy unit at Queen Mary University of London, wrote in the journal.

Nutritionally, she said, there is less protein in human breast milk than other milks like cow's milk.

"Potential buyers should be made aware that no scientific study evidences that direct adult consumption of human milk for medicinal properties offers anything more than a placebo effect," Steele said.

She added that failure of women to sanitize properly when producing milk, failure to sterilize equipment properly, and improper or prolonged storage and transportation of milk can also expose consumers to bacterial food-borne illnesses.

"While many online mums claim they have been tested for viruses during pregnancy, many do not realize that (such)screening needs to be undertaken regularly," Steele said.

"Sexual and other activities ... may expose the women to viruses that they may unwittingly pass on to consumers."

Bank Robber Busted After He Stops For Biscuits

GREENSBURG, Pa. (AP) — A man who was arrested for robbing a western Pennsylvania bank when he stopped to eat biscuits at a nearby restaurant will spend two to four years in prison.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (http://bit.ly/1K0lDr8) reports 32-year-old Shane Lindsey, of Arnold, was sentenced by a Westmoreland County judge on Wednesday after pleading guilty.

Lindsey was arrested about 20 minutes after he robbed the Citizens Bank in downtown New Kensington on Jan. 14.

That's when witnesses saw a bald man matching Lindsey's description run toward a restaurant after the heist. Police knew the business had surveillance video and went inside to view it hoping for clues as to where the suspect went — only to find Lindsey eating at a booth.

Police say Lindsey used the restaurant's bathroom to discard a coat and hood he wore during the robbery.

12 Baby Names Inspired By Famous Dads Who Welcomed New Babies This Year

A hearty Happy Father’s Day to the celebs who welcomed new babies during the first half of 2015 -- in particular the dads who put a lot of thought and care into their baby name choices. Here are the 12 names and namers we'd like to highlight.

Art -- Chris O’Dowd

chris odowd

Somehow this seems like the perfect choice for Irish comic actor O’Dowd -- cool, wry, offbeat and quirky. It’s been rarely used on its own, but has worked as a nickname for Garfunkel, Carney, Pepper and Tatum. In addition to its creative word meaning, it relates to a couple of legendary High Kings of Ireland.

James –- Ryan Reynolds

ryan reynolds

After joking with a talk show host that he was naming his and Blake Lively’s baby Excalibur Anaconda, or Butternut Summersquash, Ryan Reynolds finally announced a pick almost as surprising: a girl named James. But they are not the first to have gender-bent this boy classic -- Brendan Fehr did it first, and several celebs have used it as their daughters’ middle.

McCoy Lee -- Scott Porter

scott porter

Yes, there will be a lot of real McCoy jokes about this recent choice by "Hart of Dixie" star Scott Porter inspired in part by Texas quarterback Colt McCoy. Lots of parents are reevaluating the whole genre of Mc/Mac names for boys, from McKinley to MacGregor.

Rocket Zot -- Sam Worthington

sam worthington

Sam Worthington and Lara Bingle went even more dynamic with their choice of word name Rocket. It was first used by director Robert Rodriguez for his son in 1995, then by rapper Pharrell in 2008 and last year by another musical pair -- for their daughter. It seems that the sci-fi-ish Zot was the nickname of Bingle’s late father.

Poppy -- Nate Berkus

nate berkus

Interior designer and TV personality Berkus and husband Nate Berkus chose the up-and-coming vivid floral name Poppy for his daughter. Picked by a number of other celebs including Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer, Anthony Edwards, Jamie Oliver and Jessica Capshaw, Poppy is a blooming Number 12 in England, 64 on Nameberry -- and just ready to burst onto the US Top 1,000.

Silas Randall -- Justin Timberlake

justin timberlake

Silas, the handsome choice of Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, was the middle name of daddy’s maternal grandfather, while Randall is Justin’s own middle name. New Testament Silas is getting to be a red hot oldie, shedding a onetime hayseed image to rise to Number 137 on the charts.

Montgomery Moses Brian -- Sacha Baron Cohen

sacha baron cohen freddie mercury

Sacha Baron Cohen and wife Isla Fischer have come up with unexpected and diverse choices for their kids. First came the trend-setting Olive in 2007, followed three years later by Elula, a Hebrew name, and now the mighty Anglo-Scottish surname name Montgomery for their latest.

Pauline -- Vin Diesel

vin diesel

The world was moved by the touching story of Vin Diesel naming his baby daughter Pauline in tribute to his close friend and "Fast and Furious" co-star Paul Walker, who died tragically in a car crash. Pauline has been off the baby name radar since the 90s, it was a Top 50 name for the first three decades if the 20th century and might be due for a comeback.

Mia Alma -- Perez Hilton

perez hilton second child

There’s a sweet sentiment behind Perez Hilton’s choice Mia Alma, via its meaning, “my soul.” Mia is now the sixth most popular girl’s name in the country, with will over 13,000 baby girls given that name in 2014.

Charlotte Elizabeth Diana -- Prince William

prince william pilot

Talk about name pressure! The popular Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had thousands betting on what their choice would be within the constraints on them. They pulled it off with three classics, honoring the baby’s great-grandma and beloved late grandmother.

Sistine Sabella -- Kevin James

kevin james

The iconic name for the famed Vatican chapel, home of Michelangelo frescoes, provided inspiration for Sylvester Stallone and now to action star Kevin James for their daughters; Kevin James has another daughter evocative of Italy: Sienna-Marie.

Violet Moon & Knox Blue -- Steve Howey

steve howey

Steve Howey, the actor who plays Kev on "Shameless" and Van on "Reba," picked what we consider a perfect pair of names for his girl-boy twins. We especially liked his combination of clearly defined, traditional first names, with more imaginative middles.
