Boy Suspended For Threatening Friend With Ring Forged In Fires Of Mount Doom: Dad

Well, the consequences could have been a lot worse.

The father of a fourth grader in Kermit, Texas claims his son was suspended from school because the boy stated he had the “One Ring” — as in, the one featured in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit — and that he could use the ring to make his friend disappear.

The 9-year-old was accused of making a terroristic threat, his father, Jason Steward, told the Odessa American. Steward said that the family recently watched “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” and his son was enthusiastic about the film.

The disgruntled dad told The New York Daily News that his son “didn’t mean anything” by the statement.

“I assure you my son lacks the magical powers necessary to threaten his friend’s existence,” Steward wrote in an email to the Daily News. “If he did, I’m sure he’d bring him right back.”

When the Odessa American queried Superintendent Bill Boyd about the suspension, Boyd told them that “all student stuff is confidential.”

It should be noted that such a suspension indicates somewhat of a lack of familiarity with Tolkien’s works. If the boy used the word “disappear,” that would surely be a reference to the One Ring’s ability to render the wearer invisible. The Ring does not actually make anyone “disappear” in the sense of killing them or ending their lives.

On the other hand, donning the One Ring can corrupt the wearer’s body and mind, causing them to become dark, twisted and obsessed with power, so it’s probably best left home from elementary school.
