At the age of 20, the Latvian-born pop artist opted to have her leg amputated below the knee to improve her mobility after a lifetime of dealing with an injury that occurred at birth. Rather than let her prosthetic leg blend in, Modesta opted instead to feature it heavily in the music video for her new song, "Prototype."
She rocks several stylish prosthetics in the memorable avant-garde video, including one lit up from within and another covered in crystals. The clip concludes with a dance during which Modesta's prosthetics are replaced by a sleek, stiletto-shaped spike of heavy metal.

It's all part of her mission to change misconceptions and share her self-discovery, she told Elle.
"I have encountered attitudes toward people who might be considered disabled where people just don’t expect them to be high achievers in the real world. That's a big problem in my mind," she said. "For the media industry to have someone in the role of a cultural leader would be a very dramatic change... It would be fantastic if people of all ethnic backgrounds, physicality, and sexuality were able to exist in the media spotlight without getting a shock or a negative reaction."
"Some of us were born to be different," a text overlay reads at the end of the video. "Some of us were born to take risks."
