Wily Seal Surrenders At Police Station After Sneaking Into Massachusetts Pond
BEVERLY, Mass. (AP) — After evading the authorities, a wayward seal that made its home in a Massachusetts pond surrendered at a police station on Friday morning. The gray seal first appeared earlier this month in Shoe Pond in the city of Beverly, northeast of Boston. The animal is believed to have traveled to the pond from the sea via a river and drainage pipes
The seal quickly became a local attraction and even named “Shoebert” after its chosen pond.Firefighters and wildlife experts used boats and giant nets in an effort to capture the wily animal Thursday, but gave up after several fruitless hours. Early Friday morning, however, Shoebert left the pond, crossed a parking lot and appeared outside the side door of the local police station looking, according to a police statement, “for some help.”The seal was quickly corralled by a team of wildlife experts, firefighters and the police department’s “entire midnight shift,” according to a Facebook post from the Beverly Police Department.“Shoebert appeared to be in good health and was a little sassy in the early morning hours,” the department reported. The seal was transported to Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut, where marine biologists will care for it before deciding whether to release it back into the wild
“You will be deeply missed by your friends here,” the police department wrote on Facebook. “Over the past week you brought a lot of joy and happiness to our city. Feel free to come back and visit anytime!”

North Dakota Woman Charged After Bringing Raccoon Into Bar
MADDOCK, N.D. (AP) — A woman who brought a wild raccoon into a North Dakota bar, which prompted state health officials to issue a warning about potential rabies exposure, is facing criminal charges.Erin Christensen, 38, of Maddock, is charged with misdemeanor counts of providing false information to law enforcement, tampering with physical evidence and unlawful possession of furbearers
Christensen was arrested last week after authorities found her and the raccoon by serving several search warrants in and around Maddock.Christensen said her family found the raccoon on the side of a road about three months ago and named it Rocky. She said they were nursing the animal back to health with plans to release it back into the wild. It’s illegal under North Dakota Board of Animal Health laws to keep a wild raccoon. Authorities euthanized the animal, and it tested negative for rabies.Christensen took Rocky to Maddock Bar on Sept. 6 during happy hour and showed the raccoon to customers. Bartender Cindy Smith said the animal never bit anyone at the bar
Nevertheless, North Dakota’s Health and Human Services Department issued a warning asking anyone who may have been bitten or had contact with the raccoon’s saliva to seek medical care.RelatedNorth DakotaMaddockHealth Human Services DepartmentCindy SmithChristensenRabies Alert Issued After Woman Brings Raccoon Into North Dakota Bar

Massachusetts Man Pleads Guilty To Dousing ‘Bewitched’ Statue In Red Paint
This image provided by Daniel Fury shows the "Bewitched" statue partially covered with red paint on June 6, 2022, in Salem, Mass. A man has plead guilty Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022, to vandalizing the tourist favorite statue in Salem and will be sentenced to 18 months of probation for dousing the bronze statue with red paint earlier in the summer. (Daniel Fury/Black Cat Tours via AP, File)Daniel Fury via APSALEM, Mass. (AP) — A man will be sentenced to 18 months of probation after pleading guilty to vandalizing the “Bewitched” statue by dousing the Salem, Massachusetts tourist attraction with red paint over the summer. The 32-year-old resident was originally sentenced to a year in jail, but a Salem district court judge suspended the sentence on conditions the man repay the cost of repairing the damage inflicted on the bronze statue, The Salem News reported Tuesday
The statue depicts actor Elizabeth Montgomery — as lead character Samantha Stephens in the 1960s sitcom — sitting on a broomstick in front of a crescent moon.In June, a prosecutor said the man was “going through a rough time and wanted to do something to get arrested,” and was held on bail. His attorney said he had been living in a shelter for two weeks since his marriage ended, and had been looking for a new job.He was also charged with disorderly conduct, which will be dismissed after 30 days. The statue was erected in the city famous for the 1692 witch trials in 2005, despite protests from some who said it trivializes the tragedy of the trials.RelatedMassachusettsElizabeth Montgomerysamantha stephensSalem NewsSALEM MassSalem's 'Bewitched' Statue Vandalized With Red PaintSalem's Last 'Witch' Officially Pardoned 3 Centuries Later

FDA Warns Against Using NyQuil As A Chicken Marinade
The Food and Drug Administration has offered Americans some food for thought: It’s a bad idea to use NyQuil as a chicken marinade. The federal agency felt obligated to issue the warning in light of a social media challenge encouraging people to cook chicken in NyQuil and other cough medicine
The FDA’s release notes that the idea of cooking chicken in cough syrup is “silly and unappetizing.” But it is also potentially dangerous: Boiling a medication can make it much more concentrated and change its properties in other ways. Even if you don’t eat the chicken, inhaling the medication’s vapors while cooking could cause high levels of the drugs to enter your body. It could also hurt your lungs. Put simply: Someone could take a dangerously high amount of the cough and cold medicine without even realizing it. The FDA didn’t cite any actual reports of people who’ve gone to the emergency room after chowing down on “NyQuil chicken.” But the agency mentioned a previous TikTok challenge that urged people to take large doses of the allergy medicine diphenhydramine (sold under the brand name of Benadryl, among others) to try to induce hallucinations, and that it led to reports of teenagers going to the emergency room. Why are teens more likely to want to participate in bizarre, potentially dangerous stunts on social media?Advertisement According to HealthyChildren.org, the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that handles rational thought, isn’t fully developed until a person hits their mid-20s. This is why teens tend to be more impulsive than adults, and why they may be more likely to succumb to the power of social media, which rewards risky and outlandish behavior: Kids won’t necessarily stop to consider that laundry detergent is a poison that can burn their throats and damage their airways. Or that misusing medications like diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and similar medicines can cause serious heart problems, seizures and coma. What they will focus on is that a popular kid in class did this and got hundreds of likes and comments. Of course, social media users had thoughts...Why'd they call it nyquil chicken and not robitusserie— Matt Negrin, HOST OF HARDBALL AT 7PM ON MSNBC (@MattNegrin) September 20, 2022 you can’t stop me from birthing 5 babies and feeding them nothing but nyquil chicken, it’s my right as an american— Sydney Leathers (@sydneyelainexo) September 20, 2022 I feel like people cooking chicken in NyQuil is the kind of problem that solves itself. https://t.co/pKgSuysi2I— Kashana (@kashanacauley) September 20, 2022 Advertisement forget nyquil chicken in this house it’s all chicken vicksaloo— Andy Downing (@andydowning33) September 20, 2022 Thank god I read this. Doctors Find 55 Batteries In Woman's Body — 'Highest Reported Number' Ever
The recovered batteries included both AA and AAA varieties.Irish Medical JournalThe terms “emergency” and “AAA” typically connote a roadside incident. Certain doctors in Dublin, however, are unlikely to ever associate those terms with anything but a recent surgery — during which they found dozens of batteries in a 66-year-old woman’s colon and stomach.A report of the incident, published Thursday in the Irish Medical Journal, detailed the patient’s arrival at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, where an X-ray revealed the foreign objects in her body. Miraculously, none were obstructing her gastrointestinal tract, according to Live Science
Doctors initially decided to wait in hopes that she would pass the batteries out of her body naturally. Though she released five AA batteries in the first week, subsequent X-rays showed that most were still stuck inside — and the woman began experiencing abdominal pain. After realizing that her distended stomach was hanging above the pubic bone due to the weight of the batteries, surgeons cut into her abdomen and successfully removed 46 of them. The total number of batteries ingested by the woman was 55.Irish Medical JournalUnfortunately for all involved, four additional batteries remained trapped in the colon. As described in the report, doctors “milked” them into her rectum to remove them from her anus. This brought the total amount of batteries she ingested — both AA and AAA — to a whopping 55
“To the best of our knowledge, this case represents the highest reported number of batteries ingested at a single point in time,” the journal article said. While the incident certainly inspired curious bafflement, the report reminded readers that the ingestion of batteries is a serious, albeit “unusual,” method of self-harm. Its authors noted that the act can cause severe issues, including “mucosal injury, perforation, [and] obstruction.”“The potential of cylindrical batteries to result in acute surgical emergencies should not be underestimated,” the report stated. If you’re struggling with an eating disorder, call the National Eating Disorder Association hotline at 1-800-931-2237.If you or someone you know needs help, dial 988 or call 1-800-273-8255 for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Chess Player Insists He Didn't Use Sex Toy To Defeat World Champion
Aleksandr Zubkov via Getty ImagesA teenage chess player who managed to beat a world champion last week is now denying his incredible win was the result of cheating with the help of a sex toy.Nineteen-year-old Hans Niemann pulled off a major upset by defeating Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, 31, at the Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis on Sept. 4, and the win has prompted some bizarre theories in the chess world
A rumor circulating on social media — and unsupported by concrete evidence — suggests that Niemann was tapping into a computer program through a “prostate massager” or “wireless anal beads” that could secretly communicate winning moves to him.Back in July, a techie named James Stanley explained how such technology might work embedded into shoe inserts that a player could wear undetected.Niemann insisted that his win was legitimate and suggested he was willing to debunk the anal beads theory.“If they want me to strip fully naked, I will do it. I don’t care. Because I know I am clean,” he said in an interview after his win. “You want me to play in a closed box with zero electronic transmission, I don’t care. I’m here to win and that is my goal regardless.”Advertisement Although Carlsen is rated the top player in the world by the International Chess Federation, he abruptly withdrew from the Sinquefield Cup after Niemann defeated him in the third round. His only comment so far was to post a cryptic tweet of a 2020 speech by Portuguese soccer manager Jose Mourinho. “I prefer not to speak,” Mourinho said. “If I speak, I am in big trouble … and I don’t want to be in big trouble.”No one has proven that Niemann cheated at the Sinquefield Cup, but Slate noted that he was accused of cheating during prize-money matches on Chess.com and was banned from the site.American grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura — who covered the tournament live on his Twitch channel ― suggested that Niemann was cheating, leading the 19-year-old to accuse Nakamura of making “frivolous implications” on Twitter
In addition, Canadian grandmaster Eric Hansen later said that he’d removed Niemann from chess events he’d hosted due to cheating suspicions.Niemann has acknowledged that he did cheat using computer assistance in online games when he was younger, but he said he didn’t do anything illegal at the Sinquefield Cup.He summed up the controversy as sour grapes from Carlsen:“It must be embarrassing for the world champion to lose to an idiot like me,” Niemann said in an interview after his win. “I feel bad for him.”The Sinquefield Cup’s chief arbiter released a statement on Sept. 10 saying there was no indication any player cheated during the competition.Official statement from Chief Arbiter of the 2022 #SinquefieldCup, @ChrisBirdIA: pic.twitter.com/QQrEDamLbH— Grand Chess Tour (@GrandChessTour) September 10, 2022

German Customs Officials Follow Trail Of Slime And Find Bags Of Giant Snails
Two giant African land snails are shown to the media. (Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images)Joe Raedle via Getty ImagesBERLIN (AP) — German customs officials say a trail of slime led them to a stash of almost 100 giant African land snails and other items hidden inside bags at Duesseldorf Airport this month. In a statement Friday, authorities said officials stumbled over one of the snails on a baggage truck and initially thought it was a toy until it started moving. By following the trail left by the 20-centimeter (8-inch) snail, they found a bag with a hole, with another snail already peeping out of it — possibly preparing a dash for freedom
In total, officials found six bags containing 93 giant snails, 28 kilograms (62 pounds) of fish and smoked meat, and a suitcase full of rotting meat. All had been imported from Nigeria and were destined for an African goods store in western Germany. The snails were handed to an animal rescue service in Duesseldorf and the meat was destroyed, customs officials said.“Never in the history of the Duesseldorf customs office has a trail of slime led us to smuggled goods,” said its spokesman Michael Walk.

Science's Weirdest Discoveries Celebrated At Ig Nobel Awards
Master of Ceremonies Marc Abrahams poses with the 2022 Ig Nobel prize, as well as a Zimbabwean $10 trillion bill that is part of the prize presented to the winners. (AP Photo/Michael Dwyer)via Associated PressBOSTON (AP) — The sex lives of constipated scorpions, cute ducklings with an innate sense of physics, and a life-size rubber moose may not appear to have much in common, but they all inspired the winners of this year’s Ig Nobels, the prize for comical scientific achievement.Held less than a month before the actual Nobel Prizes are announced, Thursday’s 32nd annual Ig Nobel prize ceremony was for the third year in a row a prerecorded affair webcast on the Annals of Improbable Research magazine’s website
The winners, honored in 10 categories, also included scientists who found that when people on a blind date are attracted to each other, their heart rates synchronize, and researchers who looked at why legal documents can be so utterly baffling, even to lawyers themselves.Even though the ceremony was prerecorded, it retained much of the fun of the live event usually held at Harvard University. As has been an Ig Nobel tradition, real Nobel laureates handed out the prizes, using a bit of video trickery: The Nobel laureates handed the prize off screen, while the winners reached out and brought a prize they had been sent and self-assembled into view.Winners also received a virtually worthless Zimbabwean $10 trillion bill.Curiosity Ig-nited? Learn more about some of the winners:GET YOUR DUCKS IN A ROW“Science is fun. My sort of a tagline is you’re not doing science if you’re not having fun,” said Frank Fish, a biology professor at West Chester University in Pennsylvania who shared the physics Ig Nobel for studying why ducklings follow their mothers in single-file formation
It’s about energy conservation: The ducklings are drafting, much like stock cars, cyclists and runners do in a race, he said.“It all has to do with the flow that occurs behind that leading organism and the way that moving in formation can actually be an energetic benefit,” said the appropriately named Fish, whose specialty is studying how animals swim.He shared the prize with researchers at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, who found that the ducklings actually surfed in their mother’s wake.THAT SYNCING FEELINGEliska Prochazkova’s personal experiences inspired her research on dating that earned her and colleagues the cardiology Ig Nobel. She had no problems finding her apparent perfect match on dating apps, yet she often found there was no spark when they met face-to-face
So she set people up on blind dates in real social settings, measured their physiological reactions and found that the heart rates of people attracted to each other synchronized. So is her work evidence of “love at first sight”?“It really depends, on how you define love,” Prochazkova, a researcher at Leiden University in the Netherlands, said in an email. “What we found in our research was that people were able to decide whether they want to date their partner very quickly. Within the first two seconds of the date, the participants made a very complex idea about the human sitting in front of them.”A CRUEL STINGSolimary García-Hernández and Glauco Machado of the University of São Paulo in Brazil won the biology Ig Nobel for studying whether constipation ruins a scorpion’s sex life.Scorpions can detach a body part to escape a predator — a process called autotomy. But when they lose their tails, they also lose the last portion of the digestive tract, which leads to constipation — and, eventually, death, they wrote in the journal “Integrated Zoology.”“The long-term decrease in the locomotor performance of autotomized males may impair mate searching,” they wrote
THAT’S A MOOSE, DUMMYMagnus Gers won the safety engineering Ig Nobel for making a moose “crash test dummy” for his master’s thesis at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, which was published by the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute.Frequent moose vs. vehicle collisions on Sweden’s highways often result in injuries and death to both human and animal, Gers said in an email. Yet automobile makers rarely include animal crashes in their safety testing.“I believe this is a fascinating and still very unexplored area that deserves all the attention it can get,” he said. “This topic is mystical, life threatening and more relevant than ever.”CAN YOU SPEAK LEGALESE?Anyone who has ever read a terms of service agreement knows that legal documents can be downright incomprehensible. That frustrated Eric Martinez, a graduate student in the brain and cognitive science department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who also has a law degree from Harvard
He, Francis Mollica and Edward Gibson shared the literature Ig Nobel for analyzing what makes legal documents unnecessarily difficult to understand, research that appeared in the journal “Cognition.”“Ultimately, there’s kind of a hope that lawyers will think a little more with the reader in mind,” he said. “Clarity doesn’t just benefit the layperson, it also benefits lawyers.”Related...Ig Nobel Prize Winners Celebrate Weirdest Scientific DiscoveriesMan Who Made Knife From Frozen Poop Among 2020 Ig Nobel Winners2019 Ig Nobel Awards Honor Weirdest Science Discoveries Of Year

I got distracted by a question.”After the reported bike theft, Shone sent out a tweet calling for his pedal-friendly transportation back in his possession. If anyone sees my orange Rossin riding around - I would really like it back from the person who just STOLE IT FROM ME...529 alert has been activated...(stolen in West End) pic.twitter.com/OyCl7h4XRX— Rick Shone for Mayor (@RickShone) August 31, 2022 Shone allegedly left the bike’s wheel locked via a cable to a truck rack while he was in the store, the Winnipeg Free Press reported
The efforts were reportedly enough, however, as the newspaper described a pair of thieves – who were on bikes themselves – stopping for the bike, snapping the lock and taking it.The reported theft comes as Shone hopes to “fast-track” biking and pedestrian infrastructure in Winnipeg as he hopes to tack on more protected bike lanes and bike racks in the city.He also said he wants to integrate the city’s bikes into a Canadian-wide bike registration network in an effort to decrease theft. The mayoral candidate isn’t alone in reporting a theft this year, too, as Rana Bokhari reported a theft of a catalytic converter from her campaign’s RV in early August.Shone told the Winnipeg Free Press that someone hasn’t stolen his bike in roughly 27 years.“Normally, I’m really good [with anti-theft measures] – I understand the benefit of quality locks, I was just rushing [on Wednesday],” he said

That is how pokey they were,” Carter said.Bellamy’s family said he was stung at least 20,000 times during the frightening attack and his mother added that he ingested approximately 30 bees, too.Carter told WCPO-TV that her son suffered a kidney failure and medical officials had to suck bees out of his airways over the weekend.Doctors said Bellamy ― who was previously in a coma at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center ― would fully recover from the attack, WXIX-TV reported.Related...Who Let The Dogs Out? Newest Thing At The Corner Store: A Robot That Stocks Drinks
TOKYO (AP) — A small robot with a clip-like hand and enough smarts to know which drinks are popular is part of an effort to make convenience stores even more convenient. On a recent day in Tokyo, the robot named TX SCARA slid back and forth behind the refrigerated shelves in the back of a FamilyMart store
The hand on the end of its mechanical arm grasped a bottle or can from the stacks to the side, then the robot slithered to the right spot and placed the drink on the shelf — in a place chosen after its artificial intelligence and tiny cameras matched the kind of beverage to what’s running short.TX SCARA is filling a needed role in Japan’s “conbini,” as the ubiquitous tiny stores selling snacks, drinks and knick-knacks are called. Most such stores are open 24-seven, filled with 3,000 kinds of products, but have relatively few workers. The beverage shelves in the back are farthest from the cash register, keeping workers running back and forth. And the beverage space is refrigerated, uncomfortably cold for people to stay there too many hours.TX SCARA, which goes at an undisclosed price, can restock up to 1,000 bottles and cans a day. Its artificial intelligence, called “GORDON,” knows when and where products need to be placed on shelves, according to Tokyo-based Telexistence, which created TX SCARA
