Man In Pumpkin 'Boat' Paddles 38 Miles Down Missouri River In Attempt To Beat World Record
Duane Hansen paddled 38 miles down the Missouri River in an 846-pound pumpkin.Phil Davidson/City of Bellevue/FacebookWhile most typically celebrate their birthdays with cake and a song, one man focused on a giant pumpkin and the Guinness World Record.Nebraska resident Duane Hansen celebrated his 60th on Saturday by paddling a hollowed-out, 846-pound pumpkin down the Missouri River, according to CNN. Hoping to beat the previous record for “longest journey by pumpkin,” he asked officials from the city of Bellevue to witness the endeavor. Advertisement The first Guinness World Record for this act was set with a 15-mile trek in Washington in 2016, according to the organization. Rick Swenson beat this in a gourd of his own with a 25.5-mile ride down the Red River in 2018, which Hansen aimed to trounce. Hansen thus endeavored to paddle his pumpkin for 38 miles from Bellevue’s public boat docks to Nebraska City, according to a Facebook post by the City of Bellevue. Hansen left at around 7:30 a.m. and arrived after 6:30 p.m. — with a passion for gardening inspiring him to do so. “Mr. Hansen is a long-time Nebraska resident who enjoys growing large pumpkins, gourds and other vegetables as a hobby,” read the post. “He came up with this idea when visiting Ohio and seeing another person attempt to set this record which is currently right around 30 miles.”Hansen paddled for nearly 12 hours but surpassed the record around the eighth.Phil Davidson/City of Bellevue/FacebookAdvertisement “Lisa Rybar and myself agreed to take on this task, which we were originally thought was to float a 800 pound pumpkin for over 30 miles down the river,” added the post. “It wasn’t until later in the conversation that we realized that Mr. Hansen would actually be riding the pumpkin on this journey.”Hansen endured the 11-hour journey with a cup holder carved into the hull and “SS Berta” written on the back. His Syracuse, Nebraska-based family and friends cheered him on from land, though some did trail behind him in an actual boat — just in case something went wrong. Hansen surpassed the 25.5-mile record just before 3 p.m., nearly four hours before he arrived in Nebraska City. Guinness World Record spokesperson Kyle Galloway told CNN they’ve since received his application, which will likely see Hansen crowned with the bizarre title. “They say if you stay in your job long enough you might see just about everything and this morning was one of those days!” a city official wrote in the Facebook post.Related...Female Rowing Team Breaks World Record, Crossing Pacific In 34 DaysArnaud Jerald Breaks World Record With 393-Foot Freedive In 3 Minutes, 34 SecondsMadonna Is The First Woman With A Billboard 200 Top 10 Album In Every Decade Since 1980s

California Man Pleads Guilty To Smuggling More Than 1,700 Animals
This undated photo provided by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California shows some smuggled animals from Mexico and Hong Kong into the U.S. (US Attorney's Office for the Central District of California via AP)via Associated PressLOS ANGELES (AP) — A California man who smuggled more than 1,700 wild animals into the United States, including 60 reptiles hidden in his clothing, pleaded guilty Wednesday to federal charges.Jose Manuel Perez, 30, of Oxnard, entered pleas to two counts of smuggling and a charge of wildlife trafficking
Prosecutors said that from 2016 to this February, Perez and his accomplices used social media to arrange to smuggle animals from Mexico and Hong Kong. Most were reptiles and included Yucatan box turtles, Mexican box turtles, baby crocodiles and Mexican beaded lizards, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice. It is illegal to import the animals without permits under an international treaty on the trade of endangered species, the DOJ said.Perez paid accomplices a crossing fee to drive animals from Mexico to El Paso, Texas, where he had them shipped to his family’s Ventura County home and resold them to customers throughout the U.S., authorities said.He also made some three dozen trips to Mexico himself to pick up animals, and on Feb. 25 he was arrested while trying to enter the U.S. with 60 reptiles hidden in bags of his clothing, prosecutors said. Three of the reptiles died
The smuggled reptiles were worth about $739,000, authorities estimated.Perez fled to Tijuana in June while out on bond but was quickly captured and returned to the U.S. He could face up to 20 years in federal prison for each smuggling count when he’s sentenced on Dec. 1.Related...YIKES! Scientists Create Synthetic Mouse Embryos Using Stem Cells
According to a study published in the journal Nature on Thursday, Aug. 25, scientists have created “synthetic” mouse embryos from stem cells without a dad's sperm or a mom's egg or womb. (Gianluca Amadei, Charlotte Handford via AP)via Associated PressScientists have created “synthetic” mouse embryos from stem cells without a dad’s sperm or a mom’s egg or womb. The lab-created embryos mirror a natural mouse embryo up to 8 ½ days after fertilization, containing the same structures, including one like a beating heart
In the near term, researchers hope to use these so-called embryoids to better understand early stages of development and study mechanisms behind disease without the need for as many lab animals. The feat could also lay the foundation for creating synthetic human embryos for research in the future.“We are undoubtedly facing a new technological revolution, still very inefficient … but with enormous potential,” said Lluís Montoliu, a research professor at the National Biotechnology Centre in Spain who is not part of the research. “It is reminiscent of such spectacular scientific advances as the birth of Dolly the sheep” and others.A study published Thursday in the journal Nature, by Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz at the California Institute of Technology and her colleagues, was the latest to describe the synthetic mouse embryos. A similar study, by Jacob Hanna at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and his colleagues, was published earlier this month in the journal Cell. Hanna was also a coauthor on the Nature paper.Zernicka-Goetz, an expert in stem cell biology, said one reason to study the early stages of development is to get more insight into why the majority of human pregnancies are lost at an early stage and embryos created for in vitro fertilization fail to implant and develop in up to 70% of cases. Studying natural development is difficult for many reasons, she said, including the fact that very few human embryos are donated for research and scientists face ethical constraints
Building embryo models is an alternative way to study these issues. To create the synthetic embryos, or “embryoids,” described in the Nature paper, scientists combined embryonic stem cells and two other types of stem cells – all from mice. They did this in the lab, using a particular type of dish that allowed the three types of cells to come together. While the embryoids they created weren’t all perfect, Zernicka-Goetz said, the best ones were “indistinguishable” from natural mouse embryos. Besides the heart-like structure, they also develop head-like structures.”This is really the first model that allows you to study brain development in the context of the whole developing mouse embryo,” she said. The roots of this work go back decades, and both Zernicka-Goetz and Hanna said their groups were working on this line of research for many years. Zernicka-Goetz said her group submitted its study to Nature in November.Scientists said next steps include trying to coax the synthetic mouse embryos to develop past 8 ½ days – with the eventual goal of getting them to term, which is 20 days for a mouse. At this point, they “struggle to go past” the 8 1/2-day mark, said Gianluca Amadei, a coauthor on the Nature paper based at the University of Cambridge. “We think that we will be able to get them over the hump, so to speak, so they can continue developing.”Advertisement The scientists expect that after about 11 days of development the embryo will fail without a placenta, but they hope researchers can someday also find a way to create a synthetic placenta. At this point, they don’t know if they will be able to get the synthetic embryos all the way to term without a mouse womb.Researchers said they don’t see creating human versions of these synthetic embryos soon but do see it happening in time. Hanna called it “the next obvious thing.”Other scientists have already used human stem cells to create a “blastoid, ” a structure mimicking a pre-embryo, that can serve as a research alternative to a real one.Such work is subject to ethical concerns. For decades, a “14-day rule” on growing human embryos in the lab has guided researchers. Last year, the International Society for Stem Cell Research recommended relaxing the rule under limited circumstances.Scientists stress that growing a baby from a synthetic human embryo is neither possible nor under consideration
“Perspective on this report is important since, without it, the headline that a mammalian embryo has been built in vitro can lead to the thought that the same can be done with humans soon,” said developmental biologist Alfonso Martinez Arias of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Spain, whose group has developed alternative stem cell based models of animal development.“In the future, similar experiments will be done with human cells and that, at some point, will yield similar results,” he said. “This should encourage considerations of the ethics and societal impact of these experiments before they happen.”___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education. His wife, Jenn, had left for about an hour to go to the gym and stumbled across the surprising visitor when she came back.“The big joke is that this is really the only family emergency where it would be useful to have a marine biologist in the house,” Ross told the Guardian. “I really missed my time to shine.”It’s not totally clear why the seal went inside, but Ross suspects that his cat, Coco, was outside and attempted to “defend” the home turf against the pinniped.“Obviously the seal wasn’t as intimidated as some dogs are, so Coco must have bolted around the side of the house, into the catflap, and the seal must have followed her,” he said
The University of Waikato, where Ross works, shared photos of the ordeal on Facebook, including one showing the seal peering around a corner and another of Coco in the incident’s aftermath.Jenn Ross shooed the seal outside, and a Department of Conservation ranger arrived to catch the bold seal and release it back to the sea.As for Coco, she took some time to recover.“Coco hid at the neighbour’s house and wouldn’t come home until the seal was gone,” Ross told Fox Television Stations in an email. “Then for the next day, she wouldn’t go downstairs where the seal was. We didn’t see the seal/cat interaction, but it was clearly something that Coco didn’t enjoy.”The intruding seal was “in good condition” and simply made a poor choice, he added.“It is really common for young seals to end up on unusual bits of coastline at this time of year,” he told Fox TV Stations. “The young ones are starting to get weaned, going out on their own, and like most teenagers, can make bad decisions about where they end up.”Advertisement “I knew the kids were wanting a new pet,” Ross joked on his own Facebook page, “but this was definitely a step too far.”Related...Everybody Clap! Bremen, Germany, May Soon Lose Its Leaning LIghthouse Tower To The Sea

“Unfortunately, I think the tower is going to be history in the coming days,” he said.Authorities have banned ships from entering the Geeste River at Bremerhaven because of the risk posed by the leaning lighthouse, which is located at the end of a stone jetty that has long required repair. But port operator Bremenports said it planned to allow commercial ships entry again soon. Defective Sex Toys Are Being Recycled Into Fashionable Shoes
Streetwear label Rose in Good Faith and sex toy company Doc Johnson have partnered to create a shoe derived in part from unused or defective sex toys. (AP Photo/Chris Pizzello)via Associated PressNEW YORK (AP) — Sex toys and shoes? Try, sex toys IN shoes.A little streetwear label has partnered with a giant in the adult toy industry to create a shoe derived in part from unused, defective amusements that come off the manufacturing line as misfits.Looking a lot like Merrell’s popular Hydro Moc or Yeezy’s Foam Runners, Plastic Soul is about 15% sex toy. The rest is non-bleach EVA, a petroleum-based foam that’s difficult to recycle
The shoe is the brainchild of David Teitelbaum, founder of Rose in Good Faith, and Chad Braverman, chief operating officer for Doc Johnson, the adult toy company his father founded in 1976.More than two years in the making, Plastic Soul has yet to create the buzz of a Yeezy or the kicks of other titans in sneaker culture. And it doesn’t particularly live up to its own marketing hype as a major sustainable option, but the two Los Angeles businessmen are proud nonetheless.“Personally, I love shoes. So it was a cool product, a really interesting way to get Doc Johnson on board with something that I would never ever do,” Braverman said from the company’s headquarters in the North Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles.Teitelbaum is a collaboration king with elevated Ed Hardy, Lil Peep and Juice Wrld hoodies, T-shirts and other merch under his belt. Before the pandemic, he was looking for something new. He met with an adult film company, which put him on to Doc Johnson
Braverman isn’t sending a lot of sex toys to landfills and is able to reuse some of the base material from his manufacturing rejects, but he was happy to figure out what to do with the rest. He said he took on the shoe collaboration not as a garden variety publicity stunt but to promote sex positivity through fashion and innovation. That’s fine with Teitelbaum.“Something like 28% of the sales are going to women,” Teitelbaum said. “We’re hitting an interesting narrative. I think there’s a deeper connection.”The shoes were introduced in white last month and weren’t a sold-out-in-seconds phenom online or in several retail stores around the world. Next up is a black colorway.Braverman and Teitelbaum are grinding down the sex toy defects into millimeter-sized cubes of thermoplastic elastomer, a mix of rubber and plastic that lends itself to injection molding. That’s how the $130 slip-on shoes are made. Teitelbaum, who designed the shoe, added a natural cork insole for extra support.Teitelbaum plastered LA with cheeky advertisements to start. To promote exclusivity, the two are making limited batches, but a rollout of more colors is planned. A month after introduction, the first iteration of 1,600 pairs had yet to sell out
The online feedback has been mixed, Teitelbaum said.“A lot of it has been, ‘You look like Yeezy, go (expletive) yourself,’” he said. “But we also get so much love.”Related...It Appears Frank Ocean Is Selling A $25,000, Diamond-Encrusted Sex ToyStraight Men, The Vibrator Is Your Teammate, Not The CompetitionWhat You Shouldn't Use To Clean Your DildoRelated...'Rust' Investigators Just Need Alec Baldwin's Phone Records To FinishWill Smith And Jada Pinkett Smith Step Out Together For First Time Since Oscars SlapChris Hemsworth: ‘My Younger Self Would Be So Disappointed’ I Became Thor

Capuchin Monkey Accused Of Calling 911 From California Zoo
The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office believes this little Capuchin monkey called 911 from a zoo last Saturday night.San Luis Obisbo Sheriff's OfficeSAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) — Cops usually have a prime suspect. In this case it’s a primate suspect. The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office believes it was a little Capuchin monkey that called 911 from a zoo last Saturday night
The call disconnected and dispatchers tried to call and text back but there was no response, so deputies were sent to investigate, the office said in a social media post. The address turned out to be the Zoo to You near Paso Robles, but the deputies found that no one there made the call. They finally deduced that a Capuchin monkey named Route had apparently picked up the zoo’s cellphone, which was in a golf cart used to move about the property.“We’re told Capuchin monkeys are very inquisitive and will grab anything and everything and just start pushing buttons,” the office’s post said

Pranksters Spot 1 Of The Weirdest Things On Noah's Ark Attraction
The Noah’s Ark attraction built in Kentucky by a creationist group has made a number of eyebrow-raising claims, but the prankster duo known as The Good Liars zeroed in on one of the strangest: dinosaurs. The Ark Encounter purports to be a full-size version of the ark as described in the Bible, which tells of it carrying two of every animal to preserve them from a global flood. That includes dinosaurs, as Jason Selvig and Davram Stiefler learned during a recent visit. And that’s not all. However, the creationists behind the attraction believe Earth is only about 6,000 years old, with the flood taking place about 4,300 years ago.The creationists also claim that humans and dinosaurs coexisted at some point. Feathers Fly As Wild Turkey Dodges Cops In Slapstick Apartment Chase
A Wisconsin police department struggled to find a way to nab a wild turkey after the bird broke into an apartment last week.On Friday, Wausau police officers received a report of a wild turkey on the loose inside a second floor apartment and responded by trying to wrestle the bird as it flew between rooms, video shows:Advertisement “It really underscores the unpredictable nature of the job, that our officers are asked to do at any given time,” Wausau Police Department Patrol Captain Todd Baeten said. After hyping themselves up, the officers walked into the apartment wearing protective gloves. One carried a net. But each time they came close, the turkey proceeded to fly or race away.“We needed two of these, Brady,” one officer told another as the turkey fled into the kitchen.Doris Madden, who lives in Wausau’s City Walk Apartments, said she noticed the apartment’s broken window and had no idea what caused it, WSAW-TV reported. She called the apartment manager, who discovered the turkey.“I think it’s kind of funny. I’m just glad it wasn’t my apartment,” Madden told the station. The turkey was later released.Related...Watch Belligerent Wild Turkey Come For A D.C. New Study Suggests Spiders Snooze Just Like Humans
A study published on Monday, Aug. 8, 2022, suggests that jumping spiders show signs of sleep cycles, similar to humans and some animals. (Daniela C. Roessler via AP)via Associated PressNEW YORK (AP) — It’s a question that keeps some scientists awake at night: Do spiders sleep?Daniela Roessler and her colleagues trained cameras on baby jumping spiders at night to find out. The footage showed patterns that looked a lot like sleep cycles: The spiders’ legs twitched and parts of their eyes flickered. The researchers described this pattern as a “REM sleep-like state.” In humans, REM, or rapid eye movement, is an active phase of sleep when parts of the brain light up with activity and is closely linked with dreaming
Other animals, including some birds and mammals, have been shown to experience REM sleep. But creatures like the jumping spider haven’t gotten as much attention so it wasn’t known if they got the same kind of sleep, said Roessler, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Konstanz in Germany.Their findings were published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.Roessler and her team dug into the sleep question after she discovered the spiders hanging at night from threads of silk in their lab containers. She had recently scooped up some jumping spiders to study, a common species with a furry brown body and four pairs of big eyes.“It was just the most unusual thing I’ve ever seen,” Roessler said of the suspended spiders. The research showed the spiders’ overnight movements looked a lot like REM in other species, she said — like dogs or cats twitching in their sleep. And they happened in regular cycles, similar to sleep patterns in humans. Many species similar to spiders actually don’t have movable eyes, which makes it hard to compare their sleep cycles, explained study co-author Paul Shamble, an evolutionary biologist at Harvard University
But these jumping spiders are predators that move their retinas around to change their gaze while they hunt, Shamble said. Plus, the young spiders have a see-through outer layer that gives a clear window into their bodies.“Sometimes as a biologist, you just get really, really lucky,” Shamble said. The researchers still have to figure out if the spiders are technically sleeping while they’re in these resting states, Roessler said. That includes testing whether they respond more slowly — or not at all — to triggers that would normally set them off.Critters like the jumping spider are very far from humans on the evolutionary tree. Jerry Siegel, a sleep researcher who was not involved with the study, said he’s doubtful that the spiders can really experience REM sleep.“There may be animals that have activity in quiet states,” said Siegel, of the UCLA Center for Sleep Research. “But are they REM sleep? It’s hard to imagine that they could be the same thing.”But Barrett Klein, an entomologist at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse who was also not involved with the study, said it was exciting to find REM-like signs in such a distant relative. Many questions remain about how widespread REM sleep is and what purpose it might serve for species, he said
REM sleep is “still very much a black box,” Klein said.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education. Camp Counselor Selling Signed Baseball Card Of Former Camper Mark Zuckerberg
This photo provided on Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2022, shows Allie Tarantino holding a baseball card featuring a very young Mark Zuckerberg grinning in a red jersey and gripping a bat. (Shira Tarantino via AP)via Associated PressNEW YORK (AP) — When camp counselor Allie Tarantino was flipping through a magazine years ago, he came upon a familiar name: Mark Zuckerberg. He rifled through boxes of memorabilia in his basement, running his fingers over old photos, newspapers and bus maps before finding a baseball card featuring a very young Zuckerberg grinning in a red jersey and gripping a bat.Three decades later, Tarantino is hoping that a signed baseball card featuring one of the richest men in the world will bring a fortune when it is put up for auction next month
“It’s like my version of a midlife crisis. I’m 50 years old — what am I going to do with this?” Tarantino joked. As told by Tarantino — who still works summers at Elmwood Day Camp in Westchester, New York — Zuckerberg, then age 8 or 9, offered the card he’d had printed as a parting gift at the end of camp 30 years ago.“As somebody who collects things, it’s always really difficult to part with whatever you have in your collection. But I’ve always been like weirdly curious about how the public would react to something that’s like this that’s a weird combination of pop culture and memorabilia,” he said. The card will also be auctioned off as a digital collector’s item — a so-called NFT, or non-fungible token, that has become a popular way to own memorabilia
Zuckerberg posted about the auction Thursday on Instagram, partly as a way to promote NFT technology in general, but also to help promote NFTs across his company’s platforms.Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has recently launched support for digital collectibles.“We’re going to auction off the card against a one-of-a-kind NFT of the card,” said Stephen Fishler, founder of ComicConnect, which is auctioning off the items. He called it “a virtual steel cage match,” with bidding on the physical card in U.S. dollars and the NFT done in Ethereum blockchain currency.Fishler said he’s uncertain of the value of the items, considering they aren’t the usual kinds of memorabilia put up for auction
In recent years, there’s been lots of interest in collectors’ items involving athletes. Rare baseball cards have gone for millions of dollars. A mint-condition baseball card of Mickie Mantle is expected to fetch $10 million, perhaps more, when it is sold at auction later this month.Tarantino, now a 5th grade teacher in Connecticut, held on to the Zuckerberg baseball card, not knowing when he filed it away in his basement that the kid would someday become a household name and would be responsible for one of the biggest technological advancements — or time wasters — in social networking.“I’m a sentimentalist at heart. When people give me something, I hold on to it, I’ve kind of always been like that,” Tarantino said Wednesday evening.“He was definitely a kid you knew and remembered. I was the kind of kid who just kind of blended into the background. He wasn’t one of those kids,” he said.Zuckerberg was already larger than life, Tarantino said. “On the back of his card, he put a .920 batting average — which is like impossible in baseball. So even as a little kid, he was aiming big.”Advertisement Related...Nation Erupts Over Breonna Taylor DecisionHip-Hop And R&B Are The Dominant Musical Genre In America | HuffPost NewsTucker Defends George Floyd’s Murderer

South Korean Town's Garlic Ad Reeks Of Obscenity, Farmers Say
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A rural South Korean town is getting roasted over its video ad on garlic that some farmers say stinks of obscenity and has even sexually objectified the agricultural product. The controversy surrounds a 30-second video that had been posted on a YouTube channel for Hongseong County, a small central-west South Korean town of about 100,000 people known for its local “Hongsan” garlic, for about two years. You can see the ad below
The video shows a woman touching the thigh of a man named “Hongsan” with a full garlic head mask and saying words like “very thick” and “hard” to apparently describe the quality of the local garlic. It’s also a parody of a famous scene from a 2004 hit Korean movie titled “Once Upon a Time in High School.”The spicy ad, which reportedly generated about 190,000 views, had been largely kept underground, but began to take root in the larger public when it was aired on electronic billboards at a Seoul express bus terminal and a downtown street in the central city of Daejeon last month ahead of the garlic’s release. One farmer who saw the video notified some farmers’ groups, while South Korean media also began reporting about it, leaving a bad taste in people’s mouths.“We can’t repress our astonishment,” said a joint statement issued by the local branches of two major farmers’ organizations — the Korean Peasants League and the Korean Women Peasants Association. “The video offended the people who watched it and dealt a big blow to the image of the agricultural product that farmers have laboriously grown.”Advertisement Calling the video “suggestive” and “inappropriate,” the statement said it “sexually objectified” garlic. The farmers’ groups asked Hongseong to apologize, punish those responsible for the video production and formulate steps on how to prevent similar incidents. Shin Ji Youn, an official at the Korean Women Peasants Association, said the farmers’ groups asked Hongseong to respond to their requests by Aug. 10.Hongseong officials said Wednesday they’ve withdrawn the video from their YouTube channel and had stopped airing it on the billboards last week. The county hasn’t issued any official statement on the issue, and officials said they are discussing how to respond to the farmers’ requests.County officials said they formally changed the name of their local garlic to “Hongseong” after their county name in January. Many South Koreans believe garlic, one of the essential ingredients in Korean cuisine, boost stamina. Some think it can improve men’s sexual functions as well
During the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, the country’s women’s curling team earned the nickname of “Garlic Girls” — four of the team’s five members came from another rural town known for its own famed garlic — as they had a fairy-tale run to win the silver medal.Related...Why Is Pelosi’s Taiwan Visit Causing Tension?Rep. Bandit The 'Guard Cat' Hailed As Hero After Thwarting Would-Be Robbery
Fred Everitt of Tupelo, Miss., is all smiles after his cat, "Bandit", alerted him in the middle of the night that two men were trying to break into the back door of his home, July 29, 2022, in Tupelo, Miss. (Thomas Wells/Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal via AP)via Associated PressBELDEN, Miss (AP) — A Mississippi man said his pet cat helped prevent a robbery at his home, and he credits the calico with possibly saving his life.Bandit, a 20-pound (9.1-kilogram) cat, lives with her retired owner Fred Everitt in the Tupelo suburb of Belden. When at least two people tried to break into their shared home last week, the cat did everything she could to alert Everitt of the danger, he told the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal
“You hear of guard dogs,” said Everitt, 68. “This is a guard cat.”The attempted robbery occurred sometime between 2:30 and 3 a.m. on July 25, Everitt said. He was first awoken by Bandit’s meows in the kitchen. Then, she raced into the bedroom, jumped onto the bed and began pulling the comforter off of him and clawing at his arms. Everitt knew something was wrong.“She had never done that before,” Everitt said. “I went, ‘What in the world is wrong with you?’”Everitt got up to investigate and saw two young men outside his back door. One had a handgun, and the other was using a crowbar to try and pry the door open, he said.Everitt said by the time he retrieved a handgun and returned to the kitchen, the would-be intruders had already fled. Everitt told the newspaper that he did not call the police. He said the situation could have been different without Bandit.“It did not turn into a confrontational situation, thank goodness,” Everitt said. “But I think it’s only because of the cat.”Advertisement Everitt adopted Bandit from the Tupelo-Lee Humane Society four years ago.Related...Gwyneth Paltrow Talks Nepotism With Hailey Bieber, Jokes About Sleeping With Her DadSandy Hook Lawyers Rip Bankruptcy Bid By 'Coward' Alex Jones To Dodge DamagesResurfaced ‘Drunk History’ Clip Tells How Nichelle Nichols ‘Literally Integrated Space’

Judge Refuses To Dismiss Lawsuit Against DMV For 'FCANCER' Vanity License Plate
stock photosolidcolours via Getty ImagesDOVER, Del. (AP) — A federal judge on Monday refused to dismiss a lawsuit filed against Delaware government officials who recalled a vanity license plate issued to a breast cancer survivor because of what the state transportation secretary described as a “perceived profanity.”The judge said in a ruling that the lawsuit by Kari Lynn Overington of Milton raises a “significant constitutional issue.”Advertisement “I am ready for my day in court,” Overington, 41, said in a brief phone interview. In December 2020, Overington applied for a vanity license plate reading “FCANCER” and received it two months later. In June 2021, she received a letter from the manager of the Division of Motor Vehicles office in Dover telling her that the plate “does not represent the division and the state in a positive manner.” DMV manager Levi Fisher wrote that any plate considered offensive will be denied or recalled, if issued in error.Overington responded by emailing state Transportation Secretary Nicole Majeski and asking for her help. She argued that the average person would not consider her vanity tag to be obscene. She also said court rulings in other states suggest that First Amendment rights apply to vanity tags, and that any regulations must be “viewpoint neutral.”“My vanity plate receives positive feedback everywhere I go, and I have had more than a few deep conversations with complete strangers about my cancer and how cancer has touched their lives because of it,” Overington wrote. “The community of cancer warriors, cancer survivors, and those who love them is far reaching and very supportive.”Advertisement Majeski stood by the decision to recall the vanity plate, saying officials must ensure that they are not approving license tags that contain “obscenity, vulgarity, profanity, hate speech or fighting words.”“Your vanity plate FCANCER contains a perceived profanity, the abbreviation for the word “F(asterisk)@k”, and for that reason, it must be recalled,” Majeski wrote, apologizing for the oversight by DMV staff in initially approving the plate.Overington then asked DOT officials to seek input from Gov. John Carney.“In other states the governor has gotten involved in these cases and the person was able to keep their vanity tags,” she wrote. “I’d be disappointed if Governor Carney was not willing to at least consider stepping in, especially given his work with the Delaware Cancer Consortium and his connection to Beau Biden and the entire Biden family.”Beau Biden, a former Delaware attorney general and the eldest son of President Joe Biden Jr., died of brain cancer in 2015.Overington noted in a later email that there are plenty of other “F” words in the English language, including “freedom” and that her license tag did not actually spell the word about which DMV officials were concerned. She also pointed out that the DMV itself has used implied profanity on electronic signs advising motorists to drive safely. Those messages include “Get your head out of your Apps” and “Oh Cell No.”Advertisement DMV Director Jana Simpler stood fast, however, insisting that Overington could no longer display the vanity tag.Overington responded by filing a lawsuit last year, claiming that the state officials had violated her First Amendment rights by imposing content-based and viewpoint-based restrictions on her speech.State officials sought to dismiss the complaint, arguing that it failed to state a a proper claim and that the defendants — Fisher, Simpler and Majeski — have qualified immunity against claims raised against them in their individual capacities.“This lawsuit is one of those instances where an individual seeks to push the boundaries of what DMV will permit to be displayed on a vanity license plate, to allow the display of profanity,” an attorney for the state wrote.Judge Richard Andrews denied the dismissal motion and granted a motion by Overington to amend her complaint to clarify that the defendants were being sued in their official, not individual, capacities
Citing a 1988 U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Andrews wrote that challenges to laws that burden free expression are permitted when a licensing statute places “unbridled discretion in the hands of a government official.”Andrews also noted that, while Overington has represented herself well without a lawyer, the constitutional issue in dispute should be decided through a process that includes lawyers on both sides. He said he would ask the court clerk whether an attorney could be obtained as a “friend of the court” supporting Overington’s position.A spokesman for the Department of Transportation did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.Related...Kentucky Atheist Awarded $150,000 In Fight Over Vanity License PlatesMan Wins Court Battle To Get ‘IM GOD’ License PlateSweden Rejects Man Who Wants TRUMP License PlateFor Some Reason, New Hampshire DMV Has A Problem With This License PlateRelated...Myanmar Exercise Instructor Accidentally Records Military Coup In Workout VideoReport: DOJ Zeros In On Trump’s Coup MovesLil Nas X Smashes Billboard RecordRoger Stone’s Fascist Fantasy

New Mexico Department Of Transportation Misspells Albuquerque On Newly Erected Sign
A newly upgraded state Department of Transportation sign erected last week that pointed drivers toward Albuquerque misspelled the city's name, losing the “R.” (New Mexico Department of Transportation via AP)via Associated PressALBUQUERQUE, N,M. (AP) — It made drivers on Route 66 and Interstate 40 in New Mexico do double takes.A newly upgraded state Department of Transportation sign erected last week that pointed drivers toward Albuquerque misspelled the city’s name, losing the “R.”Advertisement People called and emailed the department to point out the mistake on the sign visible to drivers on the parallel highways, said Kimberly Gallegos, a department spokesperson.A corrected sign went up this week, she said.“I do not recall this happening before,” Gallegos said. “But I honestly think this was just a simple mistake.”Albuquerque used to have another “R” in its name. According to the city’s website, colonists were granted permission in 1706 by King Philip of Spain to establish a new community on the banks of the Rio Grande. The colony’s governor, Francisco Cuervo y Valdés, wrote a letter to Spain’s Duke of Alburquerque to report that it had been named La Villa de Alburquerque in his honor
The first “R” was dropped later, leaving Albuquerque with its current spelling, the city website said.Related...Non-Indigenous MP Delivers Mohawk Address In House Of CommonsWalruses Haul Out on Alaskan Coast as They Lose Ice Due to Climate ChangeAuthorities Find More Human Remains In Lake Mead As Water Levels Decline

Spain's Prime Minister Suggests Ditching Neckties To Save Energy
El presidente del gobierno español, Pedro Sánchez, habla durante una conferencia de prensa en el palacio de la Moncloa en Madrid, el viernes 29 de julio de 2022. (Eduardo Parra/Europa Press vía AP)via Associated PressMADRID (AP) — Spain’s leader has proposed an energy-saving move that many men have already embraced.Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has asked government officials and people working in the private sector to save energy by giving up wearing neckties at work.Appearing at a news conference in an open-necked white shirt and blue jacket, Sánchez explained he had dressed less formally not as a nod to the casual Friday custom but to curb utility use — presumably air-conditioning, but he did not spell that out
“I´d like you to note that I am not wearing a tie. That means that we can all make savings from an energy point of view,” the prime minister said at the news conference called to summarize his government’s annual performance. He said he encouraged his ministers and public officials, “that if not necessary, don’t use a tie.”Spain has sweltered for more than a month, with temperatures in parts of the country often surpassing 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). The government has urged people to reduce electricity costs by not overusing air conditioning.Rising energy costs for households and businesses in Spain has been a major issue in recent months, especially since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February. Sánchez said the government would present a new energy-saving plan next week, but he gave no details. He said the plan was designed to cut utility bills and to reduce energy dependency on “the aggressor, (Russian President Vladimir) Putin.”Advertisement In June, Spain approved economic relief measures worth more than 9 billion euros ($9,2 billion), including reductions in electricity taxes and a one-time payment of 200 euros ($200) for people with low-incomes.___Follow all AP stories on climate change issues at https://apnews.com/hub/climate-and-environment.Related...Joe Manchin Agrees To Sweeping Legislation To Raise Taxes On Wealthy, Invest In ClimateU.K. Prime Minister Debate Abruptly Ends After Presenter Faints On AirGOP Rep. Hotel Chef, Adamant Emu Stop Driver Fleeing Wreck
An alleged drunk driver in Malmesbury, England, was arrested after an encounter with the world's second-largest bird. vinisouza128 / 500px via Getty ImagesHotel chef Dean Wade figured his foot chase of a driver who crashed a pickup truck into Malmesbury, England, storefront was over when they reached the fence of a wildlife sanctuary.“Don’t go in there, look at that emu, it will do you in,” Wade warned the runaway driver, according to The Times. Advertisement The man, who Wade said appeared drunk, confidently bragged, “I can fight emus,” and scaled the fence containing the 6-foot bird and its offspring. “The driver is throwing kung fu kicks and punches and the emu is moving its neck out of the way and jabbing him in the ribs and the head,” Wade recounted. “It must have hurt.”“It was stabbing his body all over,” Wade told The Washington Post. Wiltshire police later charged the man, whom they didn’t name, with drunk driving and other crash-related offenses, according to the Post. They said he sustained minor injuries. As Wade, 42, tells the story, he was working in the Old Bell Hotel kitchen around lunchtime Monday when he heard the unmistakable “screeching noise” of an out-of-control auto. He ran outside to see a pickup smashed into a glass storefront and its driver and passenger running away
Wade had only worked at the Old Bell Hotel for two weeks when the driver crashed into a nearby storefront.Geography Photos via Getty ImagesWade pursued the pair for 15 minutes through thickets, noticing the driver was “swaying” and “staggering,” until they reached the sanctuary.“I could see this massive emu,” Wade told the Post. “I’m six foot tall and it was bigger than me.”Emus, the world’s second-tallest bird after ostriches, are known as fiercely protective of their young, usually attacking predators with their legs, according to National Geographic. After being subdued by the bird, the man fled the compound. Wade flagged down a passing police car and the man was arrested.“My only regret is I didn’t have my phone in my hand to video it; the words don’t do it justice,” said Wade
