The Bizarre Truth About Purebreds Will Make You Think Twice About Your Love For Bulldogs

Adam Conover from "Adam Ruins Everything" is here to, well, ruin everything for all you purebred dog lovers by giving the lowdown on how breeding can just be some good, clean fun borderline animal abuse.

How? Let's just say Frankenstein and your adorable bulldog might have more in common than you think.

In the video above, Adam explains how purebreds were born out of England 100 years ago, when competitive dog breeding was all the rage among the wealthy. People worked to manipulate genetics to create new looks for dogs, and then arbitrarily named these freak creations "breeds."

Yup. Dog breeds are not a thing. They are totally made up.

"When you hear purebred you should think inbred. Kennel clubs prohibit purebred dogs from ever mating outside their breed, and often mate them with their own parents and siblings," says Adam. "One study found that ten thousand pugs have the same genetic diversity as 50 individuals."

So what does all this mean for your adorable pure pup? It means severe health problems, ranging from skulls too small for brains, hip dysplasia, higher risks of cancer and generally shorter life spans.

The video ends with a note about how the Kennel Club could solve these dogs' problems by allowing cross-breeding. But, alas, the aesthetic quality of the arbitrary purebred is just too important.

But you can do your part by avoiding purebred dogs, and adopting an adorable mutt from a shelter. Because mutts are healthy dogs, in their natural state.

Thank you (no, seriously, thank you), Adam, for ruining everything.
